Check Into Cash Into Tequila

IMG_1745
In addition to check cashing and liquor, Rose's has also been known to provide its patrons with "go cups" (ideal for all those times when you just can't wait to get home before you start drinking). And if history is any indicator, they aren't too picky about that whole being 21 thing either.
Lurking in my inbox was this little gem from Cockeyed.com where they apparently went on a fun quest to document the proximity of check cashing places to liquor stores in Sacramento. Silly people of Sacramento! When will they learn what we all know here...that it saves time if you just cash your paycheck IN THE LIQUOR STORE! Check cashing places are for getting payday LOANS when you have no money!

Is this man planning to cash a check?

Speaking of payday loans, if I remember correctly the bill limiting the rate charged for a two week $100 loan (to 90 cents down from the current $15 or $16) comes up for another vote on September 18th. Both sides agree that if the bill becomes law the industry will no longer be viable and that many, if not all, of those businesses will close up shop (possibly moving across the border to Maryland). That would certainly have a dramatic effect on H street. Hstreet.org lists six check-cashing places on H street, with a few more on Benning/Bladensburg. I'm somewhat opposed to the new law on free market grounds, but I won't be sorry to see those places replaced with other businesses that better serve the neighborhood.

I don't have much sympathy for check cashing places. I'm sure there may be an honest one out there somewhere, but the considerable majority do all they can to trick their customers into rolling over these loans forever. The Post featured a local person who borrowed $500 and ended up paying $14000 in interest on it. That's just obscene.

These places do far more harm than they do go. And they abuse the very poor. There is no excuse for this sort of behavior.

most cities have done away with these places.

it's about time that dc stops payday loans from screwing over folks that don't have much of an alternative.

i say, "bye bye check cashing arseholes"....

it's kinda like the whole subprime mortgage thing. it just doesn't work.

As far as I'm concerned these are not legit businesses. There was strange article in the NYT a while back arguing that loan sharks were actually nicer than these guys. While I understand that they may provide a truly temporary loan to some, for the most part that does not appear to be how it works. These businesses get rich by bleeding poor people dry (just my opinion, bbut still).

I used to cash my summer job checks at liquer stores many years back. They chzatged me four to six dollars. If bought liquer or beer they didn't charge you any thing. I would have my older brother cash my checks for me.

Anyone have any information on the new "smoke shop" that appears to be on the verge of opening on the 1200 block of Florida NE? It may be the 1100 block -- just east of Gallaudet. It actually looks like it may be nice.

I walked by it the other day and it looks nice. I went up to door and looked inside and it is going to be fairly pretty inside.

They built that building from scratch as well. I remember when they demolished the rowhouse that was there.

Speaking of activity on that stretch of Florida, today I saw dirt being dumped in the pre-fab condos site (which didn't seem to be going anywhere for a while there) and work continuing at Black's.
I know Inked thinks there's too much traffic but I'll say again...that plumbing supply store would make a perfect spot for a restaurant/cafe with outdoor seating.

They've made a good amount of progress at the Black super market. It looks like they moved the doorway and made it handicapped accessible. I'm looking forward to it being open. The owner said he would be open in a few weeks.

Re: Capitol Hill Tobacco. Are you sure they built that from scratch? I might need to look again, but I think that is the same building that held Cuppa Joe (only gutted). They did rip up the front portion and build new steps.

Re: The townhomes/condos at 12th & Florida. There have been (supposedly) two holdups:
1. the prefab units weren't ready, but they now appear to be on site & wrapped in black tarp.
2. they gave away too much dirt earlier and had to have more trucked in, but it is also there now.

Re: the Black Supermarket. I wish Walter hadn't moved the door. It is nice that he'll be handicapped accessible, but that building is more than 100 years old and that's always been the location of the front door. It's also always going to be obvious that he changed the intrance. That said, I'll be very happy when he's open again.

Oh, and I screwed up the name of the tabacco place, it is: Capitol Hill Premium Cigars and Tobacco. The downstairs is a shop & the upstairs is a private club. I've heard that the owner is a cop.

I might be confusing it with the rowhouse that was torn down to build the condos but I'm not sure. I can't remember exactly.

I'm wondering if Walter had to move the door because the place was no longer grandfathered in and had to meet code. I'm looking forward to seeing if the items for sale changes somewhat.

They did tear down a rowhouse to build the condos. I'm not sure why he changed the door. I would doubt that the fire would have triggered any ADA requirements, but I'm not such an expert in the area.
