H Street Festival Next Saturday

HSTREETFESTIVAL
Missed it last year? Don't make the same mistake this time! The festival will be held from 12-7pm on H Street between 12th & 14th. Look for a number of local vendors (i.e. local businesses), as well as plenty of new faces.

Some event highlights (as sent to me by a festival organizer) include:

-A live music stage with performances from local artists

-Smokey’s Grill (a hit last year)

-A fashion show featuring up and coming designers

-A performance by Lil’ Dutch and The Bittersweet Family Friendly Burlesque Troupe

-Free popcorn at The Palace of Wonders

-Grand opening of Naby’s Island Restaurant at 1128 H Street

-Outdoor dance demonstrations by Joy of Motion (ranging from Hip Hop to Belly Dancing)

-Body Art by Lucretia

-Meet and Greet opportunities with Councilmember David A. Catania, Councilmember Tommy Wells, Councilmember Harry “Tommy” Thomas Jr., Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty

-And a myriad of other amazing things to see, eat, win and listen to.

The organizer also asked me to let everyone know that there are still free exhibit spaces available for groups, businesses, & individuals in the Trinidad & H Street area. Paid sponsorship opportunities are also still available. Interested parties can visit the website, or contact Leonard A. Howell, Exhibit Coordinator H Street Arts & Humanities Festival by email or phone: lahowell@gmail.com 202-997-3784

Update
**********************************
There seems to have been some confusion over the fact that the list above didn't include Tommy Wells. I'm assuming that this (the above list is really more of a press release that was sent to me) was simply an oversight. At any rate, I'm assured by his office that he will be attending the festival for most of the day, following a community walk in Near Northeast that morning.

i sure hope wells shows up. it would be odd other councilmembers do and he's m.i.a.

He may be too busy spending the 10s of millions on Barracks Row, Eastern market and the new "community center" for the well heeled in SE. When will NE get its share?

Hey, let's give Wells a break, I'm sure he'll show up or post a reason. I think he's been very involved in H St. plans.

I encourage everyone in the neighborhood to come to the festival. My partner & I went last year and it was pretty fun.

I'm sure Mr. Wells will be on the scene.

Tommy Wells also is scheduled that same morning to participate--with Councilmember Kwame Brown--in a community public safety walk around Orleans Place NE.

I stumbled on the folks at SOVA doing employee training last night and they were kind enough to let me taste a shot of espresso. Frank, the owner, said they would probably not be open for business but would be having an open house during the H St. Festival so people could look around. I'm psyched this place will be open down on our end of H St.

The only down side is that this conflicts with Saturday's anti-war march. Perhaps foolishly, I will be attempting to hit both.

I have no idea why Tommy Wells' name was left off the list of Councilmembers attending the H Street Festival, but he and all of our staff have been planning on being at the festival from the very beginning - and helping promote its success. We'd really appreciate an update on the main post since it seems to be causing some confusion.

Councilmember Wells is also hosting another Community Walk Through with ANC Commissioner Anne Phelps on Orleans Place, NE in the morning at 10:30 am. Please join us before heading down to the festival on H Street.

Hi Charles,
I've updated the post (which was only a press release that was sent to me). I added his name to the list of councilmembers & stuck a note at the bottom. I think it was just an oversight on the part of the press release's drafter.

I'll be around a bit, but if someone has a few good shots to post, please either email them to me, or put them on flickr (free account) and let me know.

SOVA is HOT!! happened to walk by yesterday as the owner, Frank, was preparing for the festival. I was thrilled to see the shiny copper bar, funky venetian plaster walls, and the place is HUGE! oh, uh...the expresso was good too...
