VOH: In Your Neighborhood

In the article you say that you're suprised so many people that just live a few blocks south don't come out on H. I agree with that, and I'm one of those a few blocks south. I've been out probably 3 or so times in the past few months but one thing that keeps me from going is the fact that I'm always driving up and parking -- even though its just about 7 blocks to get to go north and west to the nightlife strip.
Past midnight the areas just south of H are really dead and quiet -- no one out and about walking in that part of the neighborhood. I don't know, even though for the most part I feel safe, there are areas that I just don't want to be when no one else is around...
I hear it. I have friends that live much further up in Trinidad and will generally drive to H Street because they are concerned about walking home at night (right around aound 16th Street/the 1500 block of Queen can be pretty hopping some nights). I think the best thing to do is get a crew and then all leave together. But this is the main reason we really need more cabs around here. Hopefully as the nightlife grows we'll see more people out on the street. Because some nights things are pretty quite out there, even on H Street.
What I was mostly talking about in the article was the large number of people I've met who live only a few blocks south of H Street who have NEVER been out on H. I spoke with a guy at the Pug one night who said his brother-in-law (they both live a few blocks south of the bars on H Street) refuses to come out on H Street simply because for the first 8 years, or so, that the guy lived around here H Street was a place many people avoided like the plague.

elise, i'm sorry to hear you've gotten sucked into the vortex of law school. LOL. well, i hope you get a gig where you can make a difference. maybe pioneer urban conservation law as a viable field or something.

Its sad to say, but I live 5 blocks (directly down H) from the Argonout and I drive because I do not feel safe walking down H St. after dark.

Try calling Diamond cab. I had great luck with them showing up at all times of the day and night.
on a more civil note, i have to agree with anoymous. diamond cabs are pretty good.
btw, i'm noticing a lot more cab activity in the hood. i still remember when cabs wouldn't take me to my home near h street.
that seems to be changing.
