They are renovating Wheatley so that it can once again function as a school. The older portions of the school will be saved (but basically gutted) and the 1960s addition will be demolished and replaced with a a new structure. The school is supposed to have a new performance space, library with computers (and high-speed internet), and community space.

What effect will this have on the community? Thoughts?

Anyone know what happened to our school board member Lisa Raymond? We have several schools that need to be "restructured" and not a peep from her... and please I don't want to hear from former school board Tommy Wells on it. Afterall, he is definately part of the problem.

It's too bad, but now that the school board has STATE level functions ONLY, they are out of the local school managing business. Lisa Raymond and all other elected board members, don't have the authority to look into restructuring efforts. That's all under the Mayor and Chancellor and City Council. Deborah Gist (the State Education Officer) made what sounded like a power play last week regarding the restructuring, but she's got nothing. I also heard that the elected school board members were relegated to a closet in the State Education Office (no staff, phone lines, nothing) and they were all looking to go back to their regular jobs full-time. It's not even really a part time job now-they have no authority or any job to do--state wise OR local. ALL local school questions should be directed to the Chancellor, Mayor and your city council member, too bad for you that it's still Tommy Wells. Too bad for us that there's no one really in charge as our schools continue to decline. Rhee says she's hiring outside contractors and charter operators to take over the failing schools, which might not be a bad idea, except all those come with their own poor performance and sketchy hustler resumes. Don't hold your breath if you were actually expecting better schools to come out of the Mayors takeover. We'll all still have to move as our kids hit school age.
