Not an entirely local issue, but should be of interest ($16 million worth of public interest). NBC4 reports that the US Attorney's office is holding a press conference at 3:45pm.
The Post provides much more information, including the fact that criminal charges have been filed against two women in the thefts (which the Post characterizes as involving between 12 and 20 million dollars). This promises to be the largest (in terms of funds stolen) DC corruption case in history. A sample of what's to come:
"The sources said that Walters, who had an annual salary of $81,000, allegedly spent more than $1.4 million at Neiman-Marcus during the past several years."

Wow. Your hard earned tax dollars at work. Can someone tell me why we should even bother to pay DC taxes when the money will either get:
A.) Stolen; or
B.) To pay the salaries of these worthless government employees who do nothing but put together pretty powerpoint slideshows about how great DC is, but otherwise don't do a lick of work. Kinda like the H Street Streetscape project...
u forgot that only 'states' pay taxes, and dc isn't one....
poo poo? What exactly are you getting at? State residents pay taxes...Puerto Ricans pay taxes...and us District of Columbians...pay taxes. Nearly everyone pays taxes.
Methinks Poo Poo's self incriminating him(or her. One can never tell)self. Is there a DC tax board hotline I can call?
losers. i pay my taxes, and i vote.
apparently you folks are pretty happy the way things are. in a democracy, folks are allowed to complain about 'the system', and i do. and always will. why? because it's not always fair.
if you two actually have jobs, you can take night classes at the USDA graduate school to learn a thing or three, and i highly suggest you contemplate it.
oh, and definitely take a class that discusses the consitution.
and please, IF you have any puerto ricans, ask them what lots of the islanders think about being a us territory.
wow, i can't believe i responded to those two posts! i guess i am the resident dork on this blog!
OR, if you can't afford an education, but clearly have access to the internet, please visit wikipedia.
"While most residents of the island do not pay federal income tax, they do pay federal payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare), as well as Puerto Rico income taxes."
enough with you. waste of my time....
Poo, has nothing to do with FEDERAL INCOME TAX...has more to do with LOCAL TAXES...which are what the 2 DC employees of interest stole (local property taxes). I think you'll find the same wikipedia article you quoted (I'l use it since you recognize it as an authority) clearly states that residents of Puerto Rico DO pay local taxes. Invest in some of that education you mentioned.
"enough with you. waste of MY time...." (emphasis added).
Poo 7:24 "i guess i am the resident dork on this blog!" Yep, and you bring a lot of negativity to this blog. But I take it you very much like the attention/reaction other responses bring you. I agree with 600ish I St., plus I still think you're just constipated.

Not really on the subject but the USDA Grad school is shutting down, you can't even sign for classes. An R Congressman cut its funding because it competes with private enterprise.
By the way, this really isn't news. They have been on investigation for quite some time. I think they finally have a case against them. JUst think about all the money we spend investigating them. 100 employees on the case? Jesus.
Mayor Fenty said on his "Talk to Fenty" Skit this morning that he hopes to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. Meh. Whatever the time is, they won't get what they deserve.
The Grad School @ USDA is shutting down??? I guess I've taken my last class, then. That sucks.
Anon 2:25 although my bad experiences with city agencies generally outweigh the good, I think the C) on your list should include "To pave the roads, keep the libraries running, pay the electricity for the streetlights, pay the salaries of the cops who are out there taking down thugs every day, and a lot of etcs. that don't make the news because they actually work correctly.
Every time I hear someone call Federal employees worthless I remind them that I have friends who are Federal employees who work hard every day and are human beings. I don't know any city employees except for my neighbor who works for the sanitation dept. He gets up at 4am every day to go sling your trash into a truck and then comes home and makes improvements to his house so the neighborhood looks better. He's a great guy and I hope he doesn't read your comment.
Rob:
I'm fully aware that there are probably a number of hardworking DC gov. employees out there. Its just that I'm not really sure if they outnumber the bad apples in DC gov. who sit around all day doing nothing, or if the bad apples outnumber them.
I own a home in DC which I am renovating, I pay my taxes, and I try to be a good neighbor (hey, I don't urinate in the street like some other people living near H st.). That said, its disheartening (and maddening) when you have to deal with DC gov. employs who are incompetent yet act like they are entitled to their cushy jobs.
H St. Streetscape, to me, is a perfect example of this incompetence. The money has already been allocated for the project, the project was set to begin a year and a half ago, yet nothing has been done. But we continue to get happy happy press releases/updates from DC gov. officials about how H street renaissance is right around the corner.
If anyone reading this blog has the email address for the people in charge of H street streetscape please post it, so I can complain to them as opposed to complaining here.
Thanks. Rant over.
600ish person-
i was referencing a level above local taxes. but i dig your local point of view....
i believe in local taxes CUZ WE GET SO MUCH IN RETURN.
'nuff said.
you thinks it's great? wow. if u ever decide to be a farmer, consider harvesting LOW HANGING FRUIT.
it seems to suit your style.
