For those of us immediately around them, they are NOT good neighbors and have done nothing to support our community. Living outside the area, they could care less about trash problems, rodent problems, and numorous parking violations by their customers on 12th St. I realize they are a DC institution so there's very little that will be done and that many of you will continue to support them. The best I can do is to not go - and until they clean up around there and become better stewards of the neighborhood, I can only encourage others to do the same.
Was Horance & Dickie there when you moved in? It's not like they haven't been around forever.
It is up to the DC Gov to enforce parking and trash violations. I have seen them ask the guys not to hang around the corner, and their customers not to park on the sidewalk, and I have even seen one of the owners at ANC Commish Wanda Harris's district meetings in the old days. My neighbors think that they "supporting the community" by having good food at an affordable price.

the place is awesome. the folks that work there are amazing.
i've taken folks there from all sorts of different countries and U.S. states, and they all love the service and the food.

When someone posts an opinion with which "poo poo" strongly disagrees, he almost immediately starts with the character assassination. Set your watch by it. (Someone who doesn't enjoy cleaning up others' trash dumped in their front yards, and the ensuing rodent issues, must be from Iowa? Good Lord.)
The same discussion is going on over on the ANC-6A list too, with a comparable signal-to-noise ratio.
That said, I'm not sure what "Anonymous 1:13pm/H&D Neighbor" hopes H&D would do to solve the problem. They can't stop people from being jerks with their trash once they leave the establishment, or from parking like dopes. So what, specifically, ought H&D to be doing differently?
Anybody else notice that H&D's had to bump their prices? Their 4-piece sandwich went from $4.79 to something like $5.40. I wonder how much of that increase was because of increasing property and business taxes and how much was the rising cost of fuel?
Fortunately, the 5-whole-wings-and-fries lunch special at Dannys across the street is still $5, although it used to be $4.50.
Do they have adequate trash containers for their customers? I seem to recall just a tiny city can on that corner, but I can't say I remember for sure.

As a neighbor to this establishment also, anyone who participates in our single-member district ANC meetings with our representative Raphel Marshall (of which H&D is a part of)could tell you that H&D has been a nightmare to those immediately surrounding the establishment (trash, rodents, etc. - and before anyone throws out the "Gentrification Card", most of those complaining are older African-American females that have lived near them for years.
Say what you will, and I realize they are going nowhere, H&D could care less about community improvement on and around their fast-food restaurant. And that is why I choose not to support them (and yes, I've been there twice for their fish and chicken, but that was before I became educated).

Where are you getting the idea that Horace & Dickie's plans to open more restaurants in DC? The "four more restaurants in the city" that the article is talking about refer to the franchisee's plans in Miami.
I have not heard anything about plans for additional H&D's in DC - they seem perfectly content to run their one location and take a share of the profits from the venture in Florida.
And I may have gone on a bad day, but I really didn't think the fish sandwich was all that. Volume does not equal quality, and there's only so big you can make a sandwich before it ceases to be edible without falling apart.
Does Horace and Dickie's fall under the umbrella of H Street Main Street's clean and safe program? If so that should take care of a lot of the trash problem.
I agree that H&D is so-so foodwise. Compare it to an even more venerable DC cheap food institution: Ben's Chili Bowl. Ben's has upgraded with the years but still has its charm and bustle (and the most racially and economically integrated clientele in DC). H&D's is run-down and dirty, and the area around it is even worse.
Why not apply for a sidewalk cafe permit and add some tables out front instead of the parade of cars always parked on the sidewalk?

On another note, I saw on the anc listserve that cluck u chicken closed-is that true, does anyone know what might replace it?
I recall reading somewhere that Cluck U was going to be redone as a more upscale sitdown restaurant with upstairs dining. Don't know if the owner sold or if the owner's doing it himself.

Please do not compare H & D to Ben's Chili Bowl. One is a sit down restaurant and the other is a fast food establishment. I actually would NOT be opposed if H&D put out some sidewalk tables. I think it would be a huge improvement!

I agree with you, but I also think it IS the responsibility of the good business owner to get out there and pick up the crap coming out of their establishment before it is dispersed into your yard and mine. How often have you seen them out there picking up some, how about any, of the litter they help produce? I think the selfishness you speak to goes a little to the lazy, messy people and some falls on the business owners.
The owner of Cluck-U, Bernard Gibson, is also the guy behind twelve (the restaurant that will be upstairs. I believe the original plan had to do with accessing the space from the side via a staircase, but that space is public space, so he had to come up with another plan and that other plan is for people to access the upstairs space via what is currently Cluck-U.
