Be Aware 1800 Block of H

The following report appeared on the MPD-5D listserv last night--

Tonight at around 8 my girlfriend was walking down the 1800 block of H st. NE when a man grabbed her by the arm. She thought he was just attempting to talk to her and didn't initially think anything of it. He refused to let her go and started pulling her closer. Luckily, a van was passing by at the same time and the driver yelled at the man to let her go. He still wouldn't let her go, but she was able to
wrestle herself free and she ran away.

To be clear, this is not part of the H Street commercial district. This is after Benning Road takes over. The 1800 block of H Street is in Carver-Langston and it is a residential area.
Here is a map.

People who read this, not knowing the area, might think this is the H Street commercial district, when it is the area "behind" Hechinger Mall.

Thanks Richard. Didn't realize H St. went beyond the 5 point intersection.

Also, appreciate the brief comment without the long history of the Hechinger Mall, because no doubt you could provide that too -- just kidding. I offer that in humor, I hope it is received that way.

I wouldn't let my girlfriend walk unattended around the Carver Langston area, regardless of the time of day. It's an isolated hamlet that receives little vehicle traffic, has poor lighting, and is saturated with crumbling housing.

Actually, if you've ever crossed into the neighborhood just east of the Hechiner Mall you'd know that it's one of the scariest neighborhoods in DC. Totally different world than the H Street commercial district.

Back in the day when I used to deliver for Dominos on Potomac Avenue, the northern delivery boundary was Maryland Avenue. After 3 drivers were robbed around Langston, that boundary became Benning Road. That was in 1989; looks like things haven't changed much.

I actually live on the 1800 block of H ST and it is normally one of the few safe areas in Carver/Langston. To clarify a bit, it is on the Southern edeg of what is considered Carver Langston. The area where most of the crime occurs is a few blocks NE of me (the Carver apartments). In the two years that I have lived here at 18th & H, there has been very little crime on the block. Although there is not a lot of veichle traffic during the day, traffic picks up during rush hour as H ST is used as a shortcut for those using Benning Rd. Also, there is quite a bit of pedestrian traffic that uses my street. I completely disagree with Joe that it is one of the scariest neighborhoods in DC. I can think of worse neighborhoods here in town.

Carver Langston is definitely block by block. I've got friends who live on great blocks, are very friendly with all of their neighbors, and everyone really works to keep their houses/yards looking good. Then there are the blocks that continue to have problem after problem. It just depends on where you happen to be standing.

I agree that Carver Langston is totally block by block. I live on Bennett Pl, btw 19th and 21st and I walk around the neighborhood daily with my dogs. I have never had many problems (though that may be due to the large dogs who pull me through the streets) but I agree that you have to be on your toes.
I don't know that I would call it 'one of the scariest neighborhoods in DC' because there are not bullet holes in my house as there are in some homes of people I know across the river in Anacostia.

I have had the most enjoyable neighborhood experience of my life while living in Carver Terrace. I am aware of crime in the area, but I believe that it only takes a few bad apples to spoil (the reputation of) the lot. There are many good people in the neighborhood who welcome a more peaceful community, and it's important to keep that in mind.
