H Street Heritage Trail Mtg 2/19
From the trail people:
The third H Street Heritage Trail meeting was marked by an articulate account from Sam Smith, long-time DC journalist, of the riots in 1968. The group then drew up preliminary ideas for the route of the Trail, having it begin at Union Station, make it's way up Benning Road and ending south and east of Union Station in Capitol Hill.
This is all preliminary and of course part of the discussions to take place in the coming months, but it was great to see such a visual representation of things.
A link to a posting of the notes from the three meetings is now online at http://hstreettrail.blogspot.com. There you can also see some great pictures, courtesy of Mr. Smith. We're hoping to post more soon, so if you have any, please send to gallo4343@hotmail.com.
The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 19th at the Atlas Performing Arts Center at 7PM. In the meantime, the residents of the Delta Towers community are going to gather together to try to bring up some of their unique memories.

This should be a great thing for H Street. It will be interesting to see the level of participation and discussion it generates on the blog. Historically it has been very little here.
I think part of the general apathy for an H St. Heritage Trail is that most of the people commenting on the blog have no sense that H St. has a rich history and are much more interested in its future than honoring its past.
I'm pleased to see that "the residents of the Delta Towers community are going to gather together to try to bring up some of their unique memories." But this may be a good time for young blogers to participate in a meeting to learn more about H St. history, ask questions of the generations that have more of a history here (who knows, maybe our interactions will help someone recall an old story that hasn't been captured), and ultimatly have a part in shaping the story we'd all like to see told.
Hope to see a big turn out at the Atlas on 2/5 at 7pm.
I was at the first meeting and it was very cool to hear folks talk about the shops that were here.
When the Atlas opened last year we had a play commissioned that was about H Street. The playwright interviewed tons of long time and former residents. The neighborhood has a really amazing past, It was so diverse, at one point the neighbors petitioned to integrate the schools here. They were turned down of course.
I would encourage people to get involved. There is plenty for newcomers to do such as interviewing people. The will only enrich our neighborhood.
Agreed, these meetings are both a terrific way to learn about our neighborhood's history [including how it connects to our future], and an important first step to documenting and preserving that past. I hope to attend the next meeting.
Anon 10:39 said people "are much more interested in its future than honoring its past."
So true and so sad.
