Nouveau Fleur

IMG_3515
I haven't made it down there yet, but I understand that this new flower shop has opened up at 500 H Street. I'm told that the owner plans to offer herb/container gardening classes once the weather becomes more springlike. They are located on the first floor of the Language Doctors building. So some of you will recall when the space was occupied by the Mid-Day Cafe.

No encouraging comments? I know it isn't a new bar, but we need the support of the east-enders down here too.

This is a great addition to the west end of H. Folks should check it out as they leave Sidamo, Bikram Yoga, etc.

What the heck are you complaining about? She just said she's never been there... Maybe we can get a review from you?

I think what Tank is saying is that the rest of the board hasn't reacted to inked's post--not that she isn't doing her part. This is a wonderful development for the West end of the street. After all, isn't this the "retail and dining" end?

I'm personally very excited about the addition.

Mmmm...I was just thinking the same thought today(as Tank). How the board is afire over beer and tobacco but nothing on the flower shop. I am going to check it out after leaving Yoga tomorrow. I drove by yesterday as I wondered how I could have missed while leaving yoga for the past few weeks. It doesn't help that the Language Doctor sign is on the building. You would never know there is a flower shop there.

Anon,

Just to clarify, my comments were not a condemnation of Inked. Like most people that post, I think she's doing a great community service by hosting this blog.

RE the signage: When we stopped by on opening weekend, the owner mentioned that they would have new signage in a few weeks. Right now there is just a banner on the 5th St gate, but they are planning more signage near the Language Doctors sign above the H St entrance.

Yes, it confirms what I've noticed in the past as well. People get all excited about the restaurants and bars along H, but there's very little discussion about the Arts, Heritage Trails, Flower Shops, etc. I think its a fascinating observation of our human behavior.

We all want new businesses, restaurants, culture, etc., but when it comes down to it the longest chain of posts generally centers around the bars. People write about what they're interested and unfortunatly that's usually what it is - I'm just as guilty.

Joe Englert can't save out neighborhood alone - it will take The Atlas, H St.Playhouse, SOVA, Stella Blue, Seidamo's, Senate Square, and residents concerned about more than what's going on at The Pug.

Anon 4:53, i couldn't agree with you more. I stopped by Noveau Fleur today and it was beautiful. I left with a rash of mixed feelings. Here was a shop of impeccable taste level, hipness and style, unlike anything I have seen in Washington on this side of town ever! The arrangements in the fridge were sophisticated(and expensive)and the flowers(there needs to be more) were displayed with such an eye. I left thinking who is going to appreciate this(considering the excitement over beer and tobacco), who will pay the prices(I'm sure the owners will find a level, but then do they sink and it becomes just more mediocre retail?)and will they stay in business. I hope so, this shop is of a level that I would like to see more of.

I stopped in this morning and bought a small bunch of flowers as a birthday gift for my boss. The owner Debbie Moultry arranged them in a small watering can that I had brought with me. The arrangement was beautiful and it cost me only $10. That's a bargain. As others have posted, the shop is beautiful. Folks, do yourself a favor (or like me butter up your boss) and go down there and buy a bunch of flowers. This place needs to become a mainstay in the neighborhood.

djw, that is so encouraging to hear. Debbie did asure me that they could accomodate any price point. I am not advocating for inexpensive, just want them to be abe to make a go of it. She told me they do event planning, that both she and the other woman in the shop were Master Gardners and that they would start holding classes when the weather got nice.

I bought a beautiful bunch of star lillies there yesterday. Great new addition to H Street.

Anyone know their days/hours of operation? How sweet...flowers only two blocks away. My wife is going to be getting spoiled very soon ;)

Great place. Not only flowers, but live plants as well. Really the prices are no more than the crappy flowers you get at Giant or Costco. And these flowers are far from crappy, Forgo a couple of Belgian beers this weekend and stop by. Really brightens up the house on a freezing January morning like this...

My friend/neighbor and I must've been in there when Jamie bought those stargazer lilies, because they were so beautiful I got the same bunch....as did my friend! For a big bunch of lilies, they were only about $25.The shop is AWESOME, it is a beautiful space! (Debbie's sister is an interior designer :))Debbie was so helpful....and patient...as we grilled her with questions. In addition to the cut flowers, they had some potted plants..and plan to have much more of them in the Spring in the outdoor space. I can't wait for the classes!

To all, I am sorry if I mislead with the prices. The first thing I keyed in on were two absolutely exquisite bouguets in the fridge that were $125 each(it's always a big problem for my husband). But I am so glad that you all have more to report.

I regularly spend $40 at Safeway, the Market, or Whole Foods and the flowers don't last worth a damn. The flowers there looked so fresh. I am telling everyone I know about the shop. Calling it a "flower gallery" really resonated with me.

I popped in yesterday while I was taking a walk--I told them I didn't have my wallet, but I just wanted to take a look and I would be back. It was so pretty, and they were so gracious! I admired some spray roses and they gave me a little stem to take with me. I'll definitely be back with my wallet. . .

WOW !!! What a terrific place ! I stopped by yesterday, this is not the same ole stuff ... I got plum blossoms !!!

I went in earlier today and bought the coolest potted pineapple plant, complete with a little pineapple. It's really neat. They were making some custom arrangments that beautiful. I will definitely be back!

Went in again with my wallet, and got a really neat "ornamental kale". Debbie was great, asking about what kind of vase I would use, and cutting it for it, and suggesting filler. It was a lovely little treat for $13.

Wonder if someone could gracefully tell the women it's "Nouvelle Fleur" and not "Nouveau Fleur"...

I'm sitting here with my wife admiring a truly gorgeous arrangement of roses that we got from Nouveau Fleur. It's really brightening up our home over the Valentine's Day long weekend. I bought an arrangement that they had already put together, but she would also make you one and had various price points available. When I walked out of the shop, a woman at the corner stopped me and asked where I got those beautiful flowers, so I pointed out the shop. My wife loves them. I would highly recommend this place. Their flowers are of notably higher quality than the grocery store-type flowers.

Re: proper French grammar mentioned before...do you suppose it's intended to be "New Flower" or "New FlowerS" (plural)? If it were plural, they would add an "x" on Nouveau, right? It's been so long since I studied this stuff, but I think the earlier poster is right - either way, they've got it as masculine when it should be feminine.
