I hate to be a nerd, but can someone please explain to me what "Booze Clues" is - other than the obvious, a drinking game.
My guess is that is a play on the popular tv show for kids - Blues Clues
It's a trivia night- you get teams and answer various questions to win prizes. Quiz show, with booze. We need more things like this!
It actually isn't a drinking game. Though you could drink while playing. Booze Clues is basically just trivia night.
Where does the trivia come from, a Trivia Pursuit game? Or do people just make up their own trivia? Does sound fun, but would like to know what's involved.
Bring it, y'all.
Drunken Jenga Wednesdays at RNR just lost a customer.
It's on.
Not to get off topic but, oddly enough, Frozentropics became an issue at last night's ANC6a01. Raphael Marshall printed out and distributed a post of mine responding to a thread criticizing his unresponsiveness. Believe it or not, he publicly admonished me for criticizing him. It was a ham-fisted attempt to intimidate critics. Interestingly, he doesn't dispute anything I wrote, other than standing by the fact that he was unanimously elected (he thinks the 14 write ins were for him despite the fact that he was the only one of the ballot). Sadly, I and others were there to talk about a proposed halfway house in the neighborhood and other substantive issues. Anyhow, I stood by my post last night and still today. In case you are curious, this is the post which launched his tirade:
Re: Raphael Marshall. I'm sorry to be late to this chain but was away for the holidays. I supported Raphael in his past 2 elections because he was my neighbor and seemed energetic and eager. As mentioned by several others, Raphael has not been seen in quite a while. I live across the street from him and have not seen him in months and that includes at his regularly scheduled meetings. They were the first Wednesday of every month. He announced at the last full ANC meeting (not his individual meeting) that he will reduce the frequency to quarterly (despite monthly meetings being a campaign platform). it is just as well though, his attendance at his own community meetings has been poor. He most recently missed the December meeting (without telling those of us waiting for him in the cold) because of one inch of snow (he lives 100 yards from the meeting place). when I called to ask him where he was, he hung up on me. His attendance at the ANC meetings is not much better. he missed 3 of the last eleven meetings. I can go on about his unresponsiveness.
Long story short, its time to replace Raphael. He is up for election this coming November. I am compiling a list of his missed votes, gathering information from neighbors about how he has unresponsiveness, and trying to get a list of people who are willing to work to replace Raphael. We need a willing candidate though. We simply cannot let Raphael run unopposed again. (Note: still was not a unanimous vote. There were 11 write in votes against) If you live in ANC6a01 and want to help or know a strong candidate, please email me at waynedangelo@hotmail.com.

Does anyone know if this means that they are canceling Wednesday Family Night at the Argonaut? I was looking forward to going. I just don't seem to get out much since my son was born and was going to make it into a family night out for me and my friends.
I was also at that meeting last night sitting in the back. I didn't come there to hear Raphael complain about Frozen Tropic postings. That could have been handled on Frozen Tropics itself! I went the the meeting to hear about the halfway house. There was no reason for a meeting to start so late and then to spend so much time on personal stuff. Are his meetings usually like this?
Booze Clues is only upstairs. Family Night is on the main floor.
anon 12:15, That was the first consituent attack I've seen at his meetings. But good call staying anonymous. You head could be next.
I enjoy politics at the local level, so thought I'd chime in on this discussion. Although I would like to hear his side, sounds to me like Mr. Marshall indeed needs to be replaced. By running for and accepting this leadership position, Mr. Marshall chose a role where he is required to give time and attention to his neighbors and their respective concerns, regardless of the importance he himself places on those concerns. With a title comes responsibilities. We all have very busy lives, and it is hard to juggle everything on our respective calendars, but Mr. Marshall's unavailability and nonfeasance (which apparently is on record) is indicative of a person who either does not have the time to give, or one who does not truly care about the neighborhood or its residents. In either case, it is to the neighborhood's detriment and the neighbors should look to new leadership -- someone who has the time and passion to improve the neighborhood.
Yeah - Rumors of Raphael's inadequacies and absences are even spreading to other ANCs. Sounds like it's definitely time to get someone else in there.
I'd just like to chime in that I've been to several meetings with Mr. Marshall and I find him to be a distraction and very very combative with anyone who disagrees with him.
I once expressed my opinion on an issue and was berated for my thoughts and was told he was 'disappointed in me that I didn't listen to my neighbors". I am a neighbor and I have an opinion! And I promise it was shared by the majority of the community.
I hope another candidate emerges that can work with the community instead of against it, and make everyone feel welcome, even if we disagree with one of their ideas.
i hate posting anonymously but i hate being berated even more, so not worth signing my name this time.
Wayne, I'm also in Raphael's Single Member District. Would you or someone else be willing to start a website/blog dedicated soley to the issue of ousting Raphael Marshall. Personnally, he's a nice guy, but for the betterment of our ANC it is past time for him to go. I'm totally behind you and willing to join these discussions, but I want to make sure we're in the proper forum. Thanks.
NE Momma,
hopefully you've noticed in the most recent post that not only has the Argonaut retained Wednesday Family Night downstairs, but they have also added Thursday night MOTH happy hour upstairs.
Can we all agree to put names to any comment criticizing someone else by name? At least a nickname/handle. I'm not sure who's speaking/typing when it's anonymous and whether it is multiple individual entries or some people repeating themselves.
Also, what neighborhood issues would people like to see addressed?
Let's put this issue to rest for Soul Searcher (and others)... Anyone posting as "Anonymous" from now on should just sign it as "John Doe" - it's the same thing Soul Searcher and it's not going to happen or make a difference. Many of us don't want our posts followed and part of the success of this blog is that we can post anonymously.
Yours Truly,
John Doe
I was 11:57 (obviously) and 1:47 (perhaps not as obvious). As to the question on getting a website; Its a great point. As we get closer to November, people around ANC6A01 (and elsewhere) will be discussing more frequently and hyjacking Arg threads isn't going to be appreciated. I'm not real tech saavy so I need to figure that one out.

10th and I
I hate to be the one to re-hijack the thread and bring it back to the original topic, as I also live in Marshall's SMD, but I had a few Booze Clues related questions:
1. Anyone know who will be running it?
2. Or the format?
I ask because the Tuesday night Quizzo at the Pour House on Pennsylvania is hugely successful, and I know Neal Raccioppo (who runs it) tried to launch a similar trivia night at 10 PM on Wednesdays at the Palace of Wonders a while back. If he's connected (or if it's run in the same style as his), this is going to be GOOD!
Either way, I'll be there on Wednesday to check it out. Can't wait!
Wayne, I'm Anon 10:45, 2:32, and 3:30 (a.k.a. John Doe). Real or not real, I commend you listing you name and your address, something I have no intentions of doing (or maybe I have)...
Anyway, I wholeheartedly support your efforts to oust Raphael. I think we need to begin well before Nov. because unless you're willing to run (and I'm not), we need to begin looking for someone who might be interested.
I think a website/blog is the way to go (www.TheMarshallPlan.com ??) and once that gets going we can create a community and build some momentum to get him out and bring someone in that's actually going to do something.
There's so much Raphael could do for our community. If he notified people about his monthly (or quarterly as it now stands)meetings, I'm sure we could have organized/discussed ways to work together to take care of issues in the small area around our homes. I have lived in the neighborhood for two years now, and I only received a flyer one time about his meetings. Working on the issues of litter, picking up after dogs, illegal parking, rats, drug dealers in alleys and on the street, shoveling snow and raking leaves in a timely fashion, are just a few of the many things we could be working on. I never see him walking around checking things out. It's almost as if he's so caught up in his position on the board and has lost sight of how he should be staying in touch with his neighbors and being our voice on the board.
signed: United on 9th
Sounds like a coalition building. Now what to do with the momentum?
Boy, he'll have a lot to take to the next ANC mtg.
John Doe
It seems crazy that a blog posting, even one left on our esteemed Frozen Tropics should be used to berate a constituent at an official government meeting. If Mr. Marshall is tired of representing our community he should step down and let folks with the energy and time step in. Wayne@ 9th and I St. should not have been attacked at a public forum.
The issue of concern to me outside of the personal attacks was that Mr. Marshall announced that he has “stopped” Crusader Baptist Church from going forward with their plan to put in a halfway house on 8th street.
The fact of the matter is the Church has only “shelved” the proposal until they get a variance from the ANC/City to put in an elevator at the church. The pastor announced that they have “suspended” their attempts to put another halfway house in NE for ex-cons while they work on the elevator; however they have retained a law firm to help them push for the halfway house.
Nobody retains lawyers for something that is “stopped.” At the meeting it was clear that when the elevator variance is allowed, the church will restart their effort to put another halfway house into our neighborhoods.
Recall Raphael?!?
Raphael is obnoxious and doesn't get things done. I think we need someone of larger stature to take over the position.
R. Norman
hay wayne? i too was at the meeting last night. raphael's little ambush (complete with "planted" supporters) was nothing less than offensive. you handled it maturely and reasonably and i for one would definitely support you in any effort to get rid of raphael and move forward with improving our community. i will email you privately to further discuss.

Raphael has to go. Verbally assaulting someone in a SMD meeting is way out of line. He needs to spend more time attending to SMD issues. His meetings are not productive; they turn into moan-and-groan sessions that he can’t control. He just wanted the title of an ANC, but doesn’t want to do the work behind it. He is in over his head. Get rid of him, and get someone in that can represent us. And everyone knows that there is an “underlining requirement” that the ANC has to be Black. Not only is this BS, it’s also offensive. Elect someone that wants to do the job and can do it well, no matter what color he/she is.
I am out like Raphael at SMD meetings….
Anon 8:23....is the "underlying requirement" that he has to be black for your SMD?
Yes. I have been told that a few times, because the older people feel as if the young “yuppies” are moving in and won’t have any concern with issues that they may have. Totally false, everyone wants a nice community regardless of race or how much money you have. So the older community members feel more “comfortable” with a black person to represent them in the ANC. In my opinion, that scares off the “candidates” who would actually do a good job.
That is why we are getting dead-weight ANCs. They start off strong, but fade out after a year. If I elect you to rep me in the ANC, you should be on top of things. I shouldn’t have to tell you how to do the job you VOLUNTEERED for. Plus he cashed in on the fact that Robin Holden was a moron. I just hope that our SMD doesn’t lose respect among the other SMDs because we switch ANC’s faster than the DVD bootleggers that hang out near RiteAid.
Wayne, how can some of us get in touch with you or plan a place to meet to further discuss this "Marshal Plan"? Maybe the coffee shop? I'm behind you man! Raphael hasn't done shit for this SMD and if he had he would be presenting his case instead of attacking his constituents from something he's read on a community blog.
What really lights my fire is the fact that Wayne HELPED Raphael get elected! We are behind you 100% Wayne. It's your SMD, we just live in it.... :-)
Seeing as Raphael likes to call out blogs at ANC meetings, I thought it was important to call him out on blogs.
My original note:
Your meeting last night was a disaster. People are starting to wonder if you are adequate for the job. People in other ANCs are starting to hear this too. Maybe you should step down before things get out of hand? I am certain other people will take the reins.
Raphael responds:
George - thank you for your concern. Our topic was a difficult one and many had alot to say. That meeting was used for that purpose. I think the end result is what we should focus on. If you have any suggestion on other areas of improvement and I would love to have your assistance, your help will be appreciated. Everyone has vocal input George, but no one shows up for community clean ups (but want the streets clean), no one wants to help pass out flyers (but expects large attendences at the meetings). George, I am not perfect, but I am proud of the fact that you and others are able to walk our community (with dogs) and jog in safety. That did not happen with a blink of your eye. I have had to put myself in harms was for the safety of the community, that you and others now enjoy!
Anon 8:42 again....you should most definitely elect someone who serves the community, regardless of race. ANC 6A is one of the best ANCs in the city. Our commissioner(different SMD) is stellar.
I don't think Raphael is a bad guy. I just don't think he has the time or the temperament for his present position. I'd like to be a part of a positive coalition to get a strong new candidate, but I'd like it to be more about exchanging ideas about how our SMD can be bettered and what we expect of a candidate. Being simply Anti-Raphael isn't helpful in the long run. As far as new blood, I've talked to a neighbor I see at community meetings and on the street. He's a good man with good intentions and ideas and I want people to meet him (and to help me convince him to run). If folks want to contact me offline to discuss or want to participate in a positive and civil meeting among neighbors, please email me. waynedangelo@hotmail.com

Thanks Wayne, I'll be contacting you soon. And I agree, Raphael is not a bad guy and in fact a nice person, but he's not a good ANC Rep. The best thing he could do for us is step down.
What's fascinating to me is that people who have often had opposing views about things on this blog seem to be unified in their opposition to Raphael - that does not speak well for him.
George T, his comments to you were absoulutley amazing! Raphael has had two community cleanups in the two years I've been here and I participated in both of them (with a couple of others). And what are the specifics that he's done to make our ANC safer?
Cynic says:
Why would anybody have faith in local government to get things done? What magic wand does Rapheal or the ANC have that is going to change daily life on H?
And what crack do you have to be smoking to think either Obama, Hilliary or McCain can do anything to change the course of history? Stop believing in the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus and take control of your own destiny..........
