Metrocentric's been digging through the DDOT archives and here's a then and now view of the Starburst Intersection [AKA The Hub]. Actually right now the intersection just looks like a bunch of construction, but you get the gist. Didn't it look pretty cool in the 40's? Hopefully it can flourish again as the Starburst Plaza.

Check out some sketches of the Plaza and the surrounding streetscape stuff on H and Benning on the DDOT site. While on the DDOT site you might be interested in some of the old planning documents regarding H Street. If you click on some of the H Street links they will send you to the Office of Planning and you can poke around in the Strategic Development plan and some other documents from 2002 and 2003. I particularly suggest looking at the Market Analysis memo that was released in late 2002. Part of it is, of course, based on data from the 2000 census. What do people think of the projections thus far?

people, i think we really need to respect EVERYONE'S opinion on all the diverse and innovative postings that inked transfers to us residents of the soon to be renovated florida market/new town district.
let's be tolerant, and encourage a diversity of opinions and commentary on all the issues that affect us as residents of a newly gentrifying area, with low income housing comprising as much as 10% of some developments!
in other words, let's play nice please!
poo poo is just as much one of us as as that kid that shot his neighbors in cold blood, and the crazy cat lady that meanders around our homes.

Heh, I wonder how CVS feels having a sign out front that paints them out of existence (along with the Safeway and other stores).
Another interesting thing about that rendering is that there are no lines on the road within the intersection. Imagine the accidents if they actually did that...
H Street resident says:
Every public green space in this city is disgusting. Wow! The 1945 photos is amazing. Does anyone know what happened to the cool buildings that were on Benning Road between 15th and 16th streets? The one closer to 16th looks quite gothic. It's sad to see it gone and replaced with ugly 60's apartments now known as "The Pentacle." (I don't know any satanists living there though.)
Tom, those ugly 60s apartments were built in the 80s. I gather you going for the sarcastic. If not, the aesthetics on these these go down another ten points.
I'm having an hard time understanding where this "public plaza" is going. Is this supposed to be a public park in the middle of that busy intersection with traffic all around it?

I believe the building to which you refer is where they used to store the trolleys.

Anon 10:42, It's got trees and benches so in theory the senior citizens from across the street could sit there in the shade and relax. Since it eliminates that feed into MD Ave it also gives them a way to walk to the stores above w/out dodging as much traffic.
It'll be interesting to see how it's actually used in real life. Who keeps that plaza around the Eastern Market metro clean? Is it the nearby businesses? That seems like an analogous space.
