Not to change the subject, but I noticed Napa has posted a new, lower-priced menu on their website. I know they were talking about a new meny--looks like it happened. Entrees are generally less than $20.
Napa is really working hard to meet neighborhood requests. I hope folks are trying them out. They still need a Granville Moore buzz but guess you just can't make that happen - it either does or it doesn't.
Does anyone know if Naby's is still open? I've been by a couple of nights and its been dark.
Naby's is still open. They just close relatively early for a place that serves dinner (8:00p). Their jerk shrimp is divine, and it's worth a trip on Saturdays just for the ackee and saltfish dish. The curried goat is fantastic too. My wife and I are big fans.
XII is indeed having their soft opening tonight. I spoke with Bernard yesterday. They will have their full menu tonight, but no booze--still waiting on the license.
Not to change the subject again- but does anyone know what happed at 8th and H yesterday evening? Someone was hit by a car-- can't seem to find any news about it. Is the person okay?
Well maybe late at night it might not be good to walk around, especially if you're not from the area, but I didn't even seen anything that made me uncomfortable when I was in the area two weekends ago!
It depends on where you're walking from, too. I'll walk however many blocks it takes down H St at night, but we drive from Trinidad...4 blocks like the previous commenter said. Especially after the recent shooting spree on our block I feel a little unsafe walking at night in our 'hood.
Does anyone know what is going on at 400 H street NE? There are always a lot of people hanging there on Friday and Saturday night. Today the building has been painted and there are new awnings.
Hello everyone, We thank you for your interest in Napa 1015. We would like you to know that there is a website being developed and it should be up and running shortly, our Spring menu is posted in our catering website for now. Our brunch is Sundays from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm and we offer non breakfast items as well. Any other question or suggestion, please feel free to email me at napa1015@verizon.net Again, thank you for your concerns and we hope to see you soon. Cheers! Jorge
The soft opening at XII was nice. The food is definately priced well. I enjoyed the salmon with two sides for $14 and my friend had the crabcake sandwich with fries. Our total was $30! The upstairs lounge is not open yet. The staff and owner was very pleasant. I am looking forward to their grand opening! What a welcome to have more sit down dining options on H Street!
Yeah, we were headed down the street last night and one of the partners in XII pulled us in for a guided tour. The place looks nice inside...downstairs is a restaurant area and bar and upstairs is a more clubby looking level with a long bar, a VIP booth, an area for a band and an expansive dance floor. The menu's pretty large with plenty on there for everyone. Honestly, my feeling as a local resident is that H St now has or is very close to, the critical mass it needs to be a destination. That's the word I'd be getting out to the press...write another story, list what's available...the list is getting longer and longer.
Off Topic - Murky Coffee on 7th St. SE near Eastern Market is closed. A notice in the window states that the property has been “seized” pursuant to District of Columbia Code Section 47-4471. I looked up the code section - it’s basically a tax collection provision that provides authority for the District to make levies on property for failure to pay a tax, and further allows property upon which a levy has been placed to be seized and sold. At first I assumed that the owners of Murky Coffee were having tax issues (property? income? employee withholding?), but I suppose it’s also possible the tax dispute involves the owner of the building and the shop is simply caught up in that dispute. At any rate, it’s a real shame. They may have been slow, but the lattes were excellent and the store was locally owned - they also seemed to be quite popular. Hopefully, the situation will be resolved soon and Murky will re-open. Does anyone have any insight into the situation?
The tax problem is with the coffee shop. They owe more than 400k to OTR. They are also being evicted for non-payment of rent. There's a story in the Post from yesterday, or the day before where they interviewed the owner and he just kept saying he was really good at making coffee, and not so good at managing money.
I didn't read the WaPo article, but I know you don't need to be a financial guru to know you need to pay your taxes. Especially $400k worth. I'm guessing the owner blew off paying his business income/property taxes for more than a few years and probably hoped he wouldn't get caught.
That's the link to the article. Thanks to Inked for the reference. According to the article, Nick Cho, the owner, only made sales tax payments (due monthly) in 3 of the 24 months between Nov. 2004 - Oct. 2006, also missed tax payments in 2007 and 2008, and on top of that is way behind in rent payments. All this at a time when Murky was apparently grossing something like $40,000-50,000 a month (based on the estimated sales tax owed). WTF? That's certainly an impressive amount of fiscal mismanagement, if that's what it was. The bottom line is that Murky isn't coming back. It's a sad article - it ends with Cho revealing that his financial troubles have "cost him his marraige."
This is the second weekend in a row I discovered that a place I like has closed. I tried to go to the Georgetown Bagelry the previous weekend and found out it closed in January. The lack of good bagel places in DC is an enduring mystery to me.
No way, do they owe DC government $400,000. If you ever deal with the highly inept OTR, they just make things up and lose so many things, you never can believe them. First of all, Murky, did not do that sort of volume. Secondly, they paid MOST of the months they were open. Try more like $100,000k they owe, with penalties and interest. I hope Nick gets back into business and in the District soon. SOVA and MURKY are/were the best coffee in the District.
Georgetown Bagelry is not closed, but it has moved. To where, is the problem. We've been told the new location is on Wisconsin somewhere, but if it is, I don't think it's in Georgetown... Maybe Joe, or anybody with good head on their shoulders and access to a kettle cooker will realize this town needs good bagels.
$40K a month for a coffee shop seems pretty steep. I've run stores in Georgetown that didn't make that much. Big names too, with high volume. Murky must have been doing something right to be pulling in that amount of cheese. I agree, there's more to this than anybody in the public knows.

Barracuda
And yes, I know I misspelled "meny."
Barracuda

Is Napa open for brunch this Sunday? The website doesn't say...

I love the new menu at NAPA. Think i'm gonna have to go there soon for dinner again. I love the choices and price points.
I think XII is have a soft opening tonight.
good to hear about the lower priced offerings. But whats the CORRECT spelling of "meny," Barracuda? :-)

lmao @ tom
In an obvious bit of sarcasm, how did everyone feel about DC foodie's recomendation to take a bus or cab to GM's?
Good suggestion. I drive my car 4 blocks to the Argonaut. We are not an after dark walking community yet.

Re: the pedestrian hit at 8th and H. According to the cashier at Rite Aid, it was quite bad, but she didn't know anything else.
NAPA still doesn't post their hours on their website, or at least I couldn't find it.
Really, guys, this ain't rocket science.
There is reference to a brunch on Sunday, but no indication of what's on that brunch, if it's brunch only, etc.
In the internet age you need a comprehensive website.
Potential patrons shouldn't have to do detective work to find out when you are even open.

Oh come on, Mr. Heelman, does ANYONE on H street do anything to please you? Your sense of entitlement stinks.

Yes, the Murky Coffee thing is about sales tax, not income or property taxes.
