Any chance these servers will be trained and lose the chip on their shoulders? I hope the service I got this weekend was just a blip and not indicative of how things are going, after starting so well.
Off topic--I noticed that Pap & Petey's (5th and H) is hiring for their food service too.
I've had really good experience with service there during the week. Waiters and servers have always been really friendly. Even when they're busy with all of the families on Wednesday nights!
I hope Anon 11:55's experience is the norm rather than Anon 7:01's. Sunday, a few of us went to Capitol Lounge for brunch. After 45 minutes of waiting for our orders we were informed that they were out of most of what we ordered...meaning they hadn't even started cooking the orders yet. And the staff had a pretty blase attitude about the poor service. So we left and went to the Argonaut. There we waited for more than thirty minutes to get served, and when we asked about it, our server informed us that they had a fairly full restaurant and only one cook on duty. If you're trying to attract a brunch crowd, wouldn't you want to make sure you can actually serve them? The food was really good once we were served, but the service needed a serious upgrade.
My wife, friend and I have gone to the Argonaut each of the past 3 Saturday nights for dinner. Each time the food was fantastic. I had the special the last two times and I'm sold on their specials...give it a try. The rest of the food I've had is excellent as well. Their sandwiches are excellent, the fries (especially the garlic fingerling fries!) are very tasty, the appetizers are very good. Really, everything I've had lately has been great. I've been going there regularly for the past two years and I've got nothing but good things to say. It was slammed this past Saturday when we went and we had to sit upstairs, but were still able to order from the bartender and had the food brought up. Give the Argonaut a chance, you'll be happy you did. And, if your service wasn't the best, try chalking it up to an off night and go again. Anyone who doesn't is losing out, IMO.
The fish tacos at Argo are terrific. Just the right amount, at a good price.
Sadly, service issues haunt most DC restaurants. This is a recurring problem in DC generally and the Hill specifically.
At Argo I've generally had pretty friendly service, but they do tend to always tell me they are shortstaffed and/or the kitchen is behind or such.
I'm assuming that's why they are now hiring. So it looks like management is trying to solve the problem.
But at least it's been my experience that the service was friendly. That's more than you get a lot of places.
I wonder if I'm super easy to please because I simply don't have the service problems that people are constantly bitching about. Have I had some less than stellar servers? Sure, but when mistakes are made an honest effort is made to correct them and when things are slow I get an apology. I don't know what else is supposed to happen.
I was happy when on Saturday night at Argonaut I was informed by our water that the kitchen was VERY backed up and it would be a long wait for food. We were told that apps could be out quickly, so we ordered some, and didn't notice the long wait for the entrees. I'm just really happy the business is succeeding. And just wait until the patio opens, it'll be crazy there- so don't get there hungry and hoping for a quick food delivery- they have a tiny kitchen.
I would assume the posters who comment on sub-par service do not receive apologies for delays or explanations of why food takes long.
Personally, I am okay with delays as long as I feel an honest effort is being made to keep a customer happy and aware. Even if a kitchen is backed up, the waiter can still be friendly and do things like refill water and drink orders promptly. Waiters don't control the food, they are just the ambassador from the kitchen to the table.
Tom Sietsma comments that service in DC by and large is sub-standard, so maybe grumpy Argonaut waiters are just an off shoot of that?
