Check out this website for Langston Bar and Grille [WEBSITE PLAYS JAZZ], which will be opening shortly at 1831 Benning Road. The menu is soul food, with an emphasis on fresh, organic, and free range ingredients. The Chef is Terrel Danley. Here's part of his bio from the website-
Washington, DC native Terrell Danley, aka Chef Tee, is one of the most well known and respected chef's in the Nation's Capital. Danley's stints as Executive Chef for Georgia Brown's, The River Club and Clyde's of Chevy Chase are just a few of his resume highlights. He served as Executive Chef and General Manager of the former BET Jazz Restaurant. Glowing reviews in the Washington Post have helped put his U Street restaurant Creme Cafe on the map. He is the current Executive Chef for both Station 9 and Langston Bar and Grill. Danley is also co-hosting Salt & Pepper, a cooking show scheduled to debut online next year. Even more impressive are his vision and drive that have helped catapult him to the top of his profession, despite a late start. He did not become a chef until he was in his late twenties. Before then, cooking was just for fun.
And here's the concept breakdown-
Langston Bar & Grille is a community oriented Tavern. Dedicated to serving the historic neighbors of the Old City section of northeast Washington, DC and other wanted visitors. This small venture (LBG) tucked in the middle of some of Washington's finest landmarks like, Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, Langston Golf Course, US National Arboretum and Kingsman Island on the Anacostia River. We look forward to serving your every need as you dine and enjoy various libations.

chef's bio looks great (i can't wait to try his food), but they HAVE to change this part of the description:
"Langston Bar & Grille is a community oriented Tavern. Dedicated to serving the historic neighbors of the Old City section of northeast Washington, DC and other wanted visitors."
historic neighbors? wanted visitors?? given the constant narrative about old v. new residents, gentrification, etc. this couldn't have been worded more awkwardly (or poorly). lol!!
no, no! they should leave it!
it's friggin' hilarious!
it's a cute way of begging for patrons.
they should even put up a sign in the window: WANTED: VISITORS FROM OUTSIDE NE DC.
I think the historic neighbors is a reference to neighborhoods, not people.
ok, how about "wanted visitors"? what's that?
now that i think about it, i kind of like poo poo's idea...
So is the boot shape supposed to be the golf course?
That storefront used to be a cobbler, and they left the boot sign that was there hanging out front. Hence, the boot.
Ahh, I was trying to make the map look like a boot.
i was doing the same thing as you, inked. the golf course does kinda look like a boot when you squint real hard. :o)
This sounds like a great concept all around....
I also giggled when I read "wanted visitors." They should add "We don't look forward to serving UNwanted visitors."
Sounds like a great place! I hope I fall into the wanted category.
Random comment about another of their wanted neighbors: The azaleas are at peak bloom right now at the Arboretum.

The menu leaves me drooling.
the menu sounds like a heart attack by the forkfull.
i'll stop by and look at the place, but to eat that food is just hazardous to your health.
i'm gratefull it's opening when and where it is, but dang!
that menu is seriously high in really bad fats! i'm sure it tastes great, but ..
DANG!
I read "historic neighbors" and "wanted visitors" as meaning: whites not welcome. Oh well. I'd never venture down Benning Rd anyway.
The wording is a bit off, but I definitely do not think it was meant to convey the message of whites not wanted. Based on what I suspect their price point might be I'd say that was meant to suggest that it just means they are planning a semi-upscale menu. Sort of what a black frined of mine described as soul food for bourgeois black food.I'm sure all races are welcome as long as you can pay the tab.
has inked become a spokesperson for new restaurants/bars on H st. ?
i see you've rescinded your adverts for commissioners.
maybe you should just let the discussion about how we residents feel about new establishment go on...
they selected the verbage, they are responsible for it. not you.
go get some sun, and let the hood go about its business on your blog. it's clearly good information for the new 'tenants', if they actually do have an internet connection.
just my two bits.
as a side, i dig that they're making an effort.
but they really might want to offer a side menu that won't kill your heart, or make you obese.
their "other wanted visitors" ain't gonna go for old school fried food, and the folks that espouse that culinary delight likely won't be able to pay the tab.
Poo Poo, I don't consider myself a spokesperson for the new restaurants/bars. I'm just exercising my philosophy that when there is ambiguity, it usually is meant to be taken the more friendly of the two ways.
As for the commissioner thing, if someone if running and wants to announce their events here I will post it. I think it's good for people to meet the candidates. What I do not want is for someone to get blindsided and penalized for not posting a reply here [particularly if they have invited people to events for meet and greet purposes, and where the candidates have provided contact info for questions]. I just want to make sure no one gets slammed for that.
i dig.
there are a couple of other folks that are running for commissioner. i guess they should contact you for some blogosphere publicity?
maybe a post asking for candidates might make you "look" like your providing an even proving ground.
just saying...
it seems weird that you only endorse one candidate on your blog, and totally don't invite other folks to join the race.
just saying...
I've never met, or had any interaction with Rachel Hall other than receiving an email that she sent asking me to announce her event. If other candidate send me stuff, I will surely post it. Especially after finishing my last paper for law school 3 hours ago.
YAY! Congrats on finishing your last paper :-)
poo poo - keep your comments to yourself. Inked is one of the greatest contributors to this community--you are not. Your petty critiques are distracting and unhelpful.
Inked - keep up the great work. We appreciate all the time and effort you put into your excellent community blog.

Having Mr. Danley come to H Street is truly wonderful. From a person whom has waited many many minutes in line for brunch on Sunday, welcome!
H is definitely a dining destination and an entertainment destination these days

I am sorry. I meant I waited in line at Creme! his great restaurant on U St. Everybody is in for a big treat!
Wouldn't it be more feasible to judge a book once you've opened it and read a few pages? The place hasn't even opened and already there are silly comments being made for the sake of commenting. If you are that worried about a coronary, don't eat the food; it's that simple. Do you often eat at a health food store before heading to the bar to consume alcohol? Wow....poo-poo you are the brilliant one!
Poo Poo
You could order a glass of water and a salad…
Don't let the title "Soul Food" fool ya. Truly this food is cooked from the heart, and surprisingly good for it; as well (With the understandable exceptions of the Fried Chicken and Chicken Livers) :o)
Give us a try. And after your visit, don't be stingy with your suggestions on improvements. We will constantly strive to make Langston Bar & Grill the best dining experience on H Street.
