Fire at 3rd and L

Residents of four homes relocate due to massive fire. The Post has a briefing identifying the fire as occurring in NW, but good authority places it at 3rd and L NE. At least 12 people were displaced. A woman and a wheelchair and two cats were rescued from the blaze.

GREAT JOB DCFD!

It was indeed NE. It was at the intersection of Abbey and L; about 100 feet from where Kevin Turner was shot a couple of weeks ago. The neighborhood has been busy. Anyone know how it started.

studio 400 is holding a fundraiser tonight at 10pm to benefit the displaced families, according to the owner, Dizney (yes, with a z, no snark needed)

I made the initial call to 911. The Fire Department was there within 2-3 minutes max and within a few minutes after that there were another 10 fire trucks. I dont think that the Fire department could possibly have gotten there any quicker. Not sure where it started, but from the back it looks like 317 L got it the worst. The elderly lady at that location was taken to the hospital.

I have some pics which I will put up on flickr or other photoplace in a bit.

Here are the pictures I took durig the fire. They are from my cell phone, so they aren't the greatest quality.

I also heard there was a carjacking and shooting last night in the 700 block of 11th St. Anybody else hear anything about that? Thanks.

Great pictures from a cell phone, DCJaded! I must admit I was surprised with the quality. Thanks for posting.

It was an impressive turnout by the DCFD. Several of those brave people got up onto the roof on the last house -- we crossed our fingers for their safety.

moxie -- we stood and watched in a crowd at 3rd and K -- the rumor there was that a lightning strike started the fire. dcjaded -- Any truth to that?

I too was wondering if lighting caused the fire since a storm had just rolled through; although with a strike that close (I live about 100 feet away on Abbey)I figured I would have heard it.

I knew there was a fire somewhere- but I had no idea it was so close. There were blaring sirens just after the t-storm for 15-20 minutes non- stop!

Someone quasi-official looking (who turned out to be a fire geek with a scanner) said it was lightning. I am over near 6th and heard plenty of thunder but didn't see a bolt/flash.

The second house from the end-unit (317) was a dump before it was ablaze. The third house wasn't much better. Too bad lightning doesn't hit drug dealers' cribs.

I have heard of the lightning rumor. It seems prevalent. Thanks for the photos.

Couldn't figure out why SO many trucks were onsite...probably 15 vehicles total. And they were there late from what I could tell!! Pepco too!

NBC4 is reporting it as an arson.

I've had a house fire and will never forget that smell and the devastation it causes. I knew it as soon as it came through our windows. Does anyone know where we could donate clothes, bedding, housewares, etc???

The Washington Post is also reporting it as arson, $500,000 damage. What a terrible thing to do. If the fire department hadn't gotten there so quickly, the lady in the wheelchair could have died.

Last night the old woman stated (on one of the news channels) one of her relatives was responsible for the arson.

Soul Searcher said yesterday that Studio 400 was holding a fundraiser for the displaced families last night. I think that's wonderful. It could buy some good graces from the community that thought they snuck in under the radar. Does anyone know how that turned out?

Can someone post a link to some of the news coverage? I can't seem to find it online for some reason.

Thanks in advance ...

studio 400 should raise money for flack jackets, not shitholes that were burned down
