The following was forwarded to the ANC 6A listserv [just to be clear, I don't recall receiving notice of this, and I live a block away from the station and it's in my ANC SMD]--
Thank you for your recent inquiry to 'Ask the Chief. Engine 10 has been temporarily closed, however there will not be any reduction of services to the surrounding areas. Many of the services and vehicles will be relocated to Galludet's campus or Engine 8 at 1520 C Street, SE. The Council and Mayor's constituent services offices have been notified of this as well as many of the ANC Commissioners. At this time there is no
exact date set to re-open Engine 10, but we will definitely be in touch with the community as we move closer to completion. If you need any other information or have any other concerns please do not hesitate to call on us at any time.
Sincerely,
Amy

Have you contacted them for further info? As the ANC rep for that SMD, I would think you'd be entitled to more info from them.
Isn't this the celebrated "House of Pain"? I thought they were supposed to be the busiest station in the US and that firefighters competed to work there. Why close this one?
I just saw this. I'll need to check to make sure I didn't just miss the letter. This station is very busy. I assume they must be working on the station somehow.
Oh good, I hope so. I'd hate to see them go. It's nice knowing they're so close.
A fireman friend of mine told me about this recently. The firehouse is in terrible shape and needs repairs. The truck and engine will be working from the other locations until it's fixed. I think he said a year.
Please be advised that the closing of the Fire station was not a last minute decision.
The proposal for the Fire Station at 1342 Florida Avenue to be renovated has been in the works for more than a year. DC Fire/EMS & the University have an agreement to temporarily relocate the station to the campus of Galladuet; however, it is my understanding that the facility was not ready in time originally proposed. This agreement was reached in order that the station would not have to relocate out of the service area. The temporary location for the station was to be housed at 5th & Florida Avenue.
The original structure was built in the 1940's and no major renovation has been done to facility.
For further information regarding this issue, please contact the DC Fire/EMS website.
i just got an AlertDC sms message that said it would be down for 16-20 months.
How is a university an appropriate place to house a fire station? Exactly what is going to be there -- the trucks? Are the fire personnel going to live in the dorms? Maybe that would be a good idea on second thought!
