I've heard from a couple people now that there are plans to put an Arby's in the space where the farmers market is currently housed later this summer. Does anybody know if this is true? I like the farmers market, but I really like Arby's.
i could be wrong, but i believe a) arby's would be required to seek zoning relief before opening a fast food restaurant on h (anc 6c should be informed of this); and b) there is already a huge condo/office slated for that property.
Even if an Arby's is planned as part of the larger construction, there's no way they could possibly get it up and running this year, let alone this summer.
As a fast-food joint they would require the approval that was mentioned above, first.
As part of a larger construction project, they wouldn't be able to open until the existing structures came down and the new structure went up - a quickly look at the timeline of Senate Square and the new building across H from Senate Square can give you an idea of just how rapidly that would occur.
I don't think anyone said "immediately"...they said plans....so that "could" mean as a part of the new construction, although I didn't think that the retail committed this early. Since that project process is underway there, I don't see how an Arby's would go in as other than part of it.
I'm all for the farms to make a profit. However, I'm skeptical as to whether all the stuff they offer for sale (at a sometimes-steep premium compared to conventional grocery stores or Korean markets) are truely grown and raised by them. I often see boxes of produce that look like they were bought from the commercial warehouses instead of lovingly grown on a small farms.
Yes, all of the items that they sell are grown by them and sold by them. There are no middle people, and the folks that are in charge of the Fresh Farm Market make inspections to ensure everything is on the up and up. The boxes you see are probably ones that are ordered for shipment so that the product remains in the best possible condition.
The market is going to have to move to make way for the new construction but I hope they find another location nearby. But there is no way an Arby's will be allowed to open, it's pretty clear the neighborhood does not want fast food and the regulations should prevent one from opening.
I believe that, as part of the neighborhood amenities package for the Dreyfuss project, that space is set aside to accomodate the Farmer's Market. So it will move down the street a few blocks.

The condo office has retail on the bottom doesn't it? The Arby's may be part of that development. Anyone know?
