I was poking around on website about Detroit and saw this image that reminded me of H Street Storage, but with different windows. Now while I know that H Street Self Storage is many people's favorite building to hate, I've actually heard that it is quite cool inside, I sort of think it could work for apartments, lofts, or cool offices, with a little effort. Anyway, take a look at the link and consider it.

Oh, Inked. If only you were a guy. And I was single....
I've often thought the same about that building. Definitely ugly in it's current state, but it could be redone as semi-real lofts, as opposed to those hideous fake loft things we have been seeing pop up.
It is ugly, but at least it's not soul-deadeningly bland like so much we see these days.
The immediate problem, though, is height. Or lack thereof. Most developers would want a taller building, and most likely that would mean tearing that one down.
Maybe the structure would support maintaining the current structure and building something exotic and interesting on top?
I can't believe you proposed that! I have often thought the same....live/work for artists with retail(for the tennants) and gallery space along the street. I don't mind the height....there could be a fabulous roof deck up there(anyone see the Pierce School on the CHRS House tour?).
I have had a storage space for years there. The big elevators are sooooo cool because they used to haul cars up and down among the floors. I love old industrial buildings and this is one of the few in Washington.
What we really need is a parking garage for all the people visiting H street businesses. I really hate it when I have to park four blocks away coming back late to my home.
I like the old Ourisman Chevy Place. A part of me would like it to again be a car dealership, seeing how DC has I think maybe one new car dealership left. The building could be beautiful, well fact it is beautiful if you look past the years of neglect. I am not a fan of artist space.
I am not sure why we praise artists over other professions. A gallery would be nice, so would other projects.
Again, I would love for the building to be restored. I could even see a museum there about H and the area, perhaps an Annex of the building museum.
I feel that H needs a touchstone back to its pasts something that's not new, fresh, hip, cool or about tomorrow, but something that sends us back to its glory days and all the angst and issues present then and then from there helps guild our future. There is a lot of history in this town, and most of it is untold.
But that's just my two cents.

Untold history? Have you ever been to a meseum on the National Mall?
What should we put there? A meseum dedicated to the 1968 riots?
There's more to the area than the Riots.
If that's all you know, then really, there's nothing else for us to talk about.
For any one interested, we can actually talk about the History of the region.
It's rich.

What I've been impressed with is "clean" it is inside. For a storage facility, it's pretty nice. It doesn't do much for the overall appeal for the neighborhood, but, what can you do?
