Radius at the Ohio

IMG_3145
I received [it was forwarded] the email below regarding the Ohio--

Return of the Ohio Restaurant at 14th and H! This is great news for our neighborhood.

The restaurant will be called "Radius at the Ohio" to respect and acknowledge the legacy of the original "Ohio" and to build on a restaurant in Mt. Pleasant called "Radius" which the owners have successfully operated for 4 years.

The ABL committee will be considering a restaurant liquor license proposal and they will be hearing from the owner. The plans for the restaurant at this point are generally:

- full dinner and brunch menu as well as NY-style pizza (made from scratch)
- no plans for live music with an option to reconsider in the future
- applying for a public space permit to "enclose" a portion of the large area on the east side (14th Street side) to provide a seasonal outdoor dining option for our customers

The owners also own:

Tonic at Quigley's Pharmacy 2036 G Street NW
Tonic of Mount Pleasant 3155 Mount Pleasant Street NW
Radius -- Mount Pleasant 3155 Mount Pleasant Street NW

If you have any interest, please attend the ABL meeting. The owner has offered to send a representative to our meet and greet which is a the same time if you all are interested.

If you have any concerns, please email me or Commissioner Beatty.

I've had Radius pizza: gourmet pizza at gourmet prices. Which is fair.

Haven't been to Tonic in awhile (maybe 4 years). A solid establishment.

I thought the Ohio was going to be remade into a diner-style restaurant. And aren't there already plans for a wood-fired pizza place to open on that block?

Whatever comes in, I'm sure it will be a welcome addition, it just seems kind of curious to me...

Is there a time, date, and location for this meeting?

Dang it, Elise! I was going to post a scarastic comment about crime and diners, and then I read your next post first about being mature and so forth. Way to take the fun out of my morning.

I'm always skeptical about "New York Style" pizza, much like I'm sure people from Chicago cringe when they see "Chicago Style." Will it be greasy, have only like two or three topping choices, and come with a surly Italian guy in a wife beater serving it?

There's always room in the market for a good pizza place . . . especially when they aren't any other good pizza places in the market.

Side note: My favorite three pizza places in the city are Two Amy's, Matchbox, and Ella's (honorable mention to A.V. Ristorante, which has either already closed or will soon). Anyone care to recommend a good pizza place in the Capitol Hill/H-street area?

Agree with Mose wholeheartedly. You can never have too many good pizza places.

DC seemingly has a billion Thai/Chinese places but hardly any decent (emphasis on decent) pizza places.

City Pizza on H St. and Ristorante Italian on 3rd and D St. NE are decent, but I wouldn't put them in the NY or Philly level of good pizza. DC needs to import some Italian guys in wife beaters before we get to NY/Philly level. :-)

Good grief people, this is great news if it's true. Im all for higher-end businesses coming to H St. especially those that are taking over the numerous unoccupied spaces on the strip. We've been blessed by some very cool businesses in the past year, sova, Granville, sticky rice, etc, I will welcome radius with open arms and a open wallet.

tonic is tight! glad to hear this news! and glad to hear more dc entrepreneurs with a succesful track record are investing in the neighborhood.

The best pizza in DC is up on MacArthur Blvd. Palisades Pizzeria as seen below is as close to NY pizza as I've seen anywhere near DC. It's worth the trip, if you don't have a car bike it.

Armand's is awesome Deep Dish but carry out only to my side of H. I like Capital Pizza on Florida for delivery, but I live half a block away, so I just walk:)

oh, and +1 on Matchbox. Aren't they opening a location on Barracks Row?

John Mitchell said...

Yes, last Fall the Matchbox people were showing off drawings of their new location on Barracks Row. It seemed they were trying to open in time to catch the inaugural season of the new stadium. Well, time for them to take the wraps off, methinks.

I hope it's not authentic NY style pizza, because NY Style is some of the MOST overated stuff in the world. The emperor has no clothes on this one.

Jamie,
change of plans. I'm assuming the other pizza place will now become something else.

Another vote for Citipizza (5th and H). We're regulars; the toppings are decent and the crust is suprisingly good, especially for $9.45 for a large (what they call extra large is actually "large" on most menus). But still, it's just basic carryout, and if a truly excellent pizza place were to open, we would be there as well.

At the Barracks Row fest last year, the owners of Matchbox said they hoped to open on 8th St late this summer, but when I passed through a week or two ago there were a bunch of stop-work orders on the door, so it's gonna be quite a while, I'd guess.

NPM,
Where on 8th Street is Matchbox planning to locate?

It's a shame you can't get a decent DC-style (e.g., original Ledos in Langley Park) pizza in DC: buttery crust, smoked provolone. Or even some AV style white pizza with Danish fontina would be much appreciated.

Radius is good for what it is.

I for one, could not be more thrilled to hear Radius is coming to my block. I hike up to the Mt. Pleasant location regularly, and the pizza is worth every penny and the trip. The Ducati (italian sausage, red peppers, red onion) is particularly excellent. They have free wine on Wednesday's, which is a great deal.

There is a Ledo’s Pizza just above Walter Reed on Georgia Ave in NW. The pizza is a little on the greasy side, so after a few trips, I stopped going. It may be basic, but I really like Pizza Boli (near 8th & Penn SE). One XL cheese for pick up is cheap and delicious...perfect for a family of 4.

ps-no relation to jennifer :)

Shout out to Red Rocks Pizzeria at 11th and Park Road NW (just a block from Wonderland).

Any idea why Armand's won't deliver north of H St, when their webpage says they deliver all the way up to NY Ave?

I'm looking for something similar to what I could get in Boston (at a place called Sicilia's) that had an amazing stuffed pizza, similar, I guess, to Chicago-style.

I lived in Mt. Pleasant before moving back to the H St. area. Tonic and Radius are some of my favorite places to eat in DC and a Radius will be an EXCELLENT addition to the street.

Good atmosphere - fantastic pizza, if a tad expensive.
