Their menu looks scrumptious, and affordable. Has anyone tried it?

Yeah, I have to admit, I'm really surprised to see so many vegetarian options. I will have to try this out. yay cheap sit down!

Cool! It's interesting that the only "beef" they have is ox tail and curried goat! But it looks great!

:-)

So, it's from the same owners as the one on Florida? Maybe they can be open for more regular hours, unlike another place on the corner...

Russell Williams said...

The food is great, but I will never eat there because there are no options for drinks that don't contain sugar. Please offer bottled water or some healthy alternative. I know that may not be your traditional big seller, but there are many people, like myself who are very put off when there are no healthy drink options.

They have bottled water.

this place is great! love to have good cheap eats in the area. russell, grab a to go order and take it home where you can enjoy any beverage you like. i am not quite sure i follow your logic for banning this place.

must be a new occurrence. Jerk chicken for dinner anyone?

8th and El,
different owner than the one of Florida.

I hope this Tropicana Franchise is not owned by the same person who owns the Tropicana on 12th Street, NE in Brookland. I recently read an article that the owner of that Tropicana was busted for providing illegal immigrants with fraudulent driver’s licenses. The scheme was revealed following a raid on the D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles center in Georgetown.

We have enough problems to contend with on H Street. The last thing we need is another joker in our neighborhood.

Rusell- what could be more healthy than Nutriment?

inked said...

The people who own this Tropicana do NOT own any of the other Tropicana franchises.

Good to know its a different owner, Inked. Because doing a Tropicana Google search you'll find where the one on FL Ave was shut down for a period for health code violations. So glad to know this is a different owner and it will be safe to try.

Looking forward to trying them out. My wife and are are huge Naby's Island fans, but Naby's maintains some tough hours to make it home in time for.

I do wish Tropicana would offer jerk shrimp in addition to curried shrimp.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, that's my problem with Naby's. I really like their food, but they keep really inconvenient hours. They close for the night right when most places are hitting their stride for dinner.

Candace said...

I wonder if they deliver? I tried to email them at the address provided on the post, but got an error response that the address was invalid. It would be nice to have some great options around H street that deliver.

Anonymous said...

Candance,
Naby Island does deliver. However, they close at 8pm.

Candace said...

Is Naby's Island the same as Tropicana Eatery? :)

NABY is now open much later, especially on the weekend. The owner said that the limitted hour before was winters hours. I think these days, he's open till at least 9PM.
had goat curry and jerk chicken from there last week, so yummy

Anonymous said...

Naby's has the same hours they've had for some time: close at 8p Tues., Wed., and Thurs., close at 9p Fri. and Sat., closed on Sundays and Mondays. For a place that serves dinner, those closing times are at least an hour too early on each day of the week, and not being open at all on Sundays OR Mondays is a shame for those of us who love their food.

And the food is superb, prices reasonable, and the service is always good, better than, say, Argonaut or Sticky Rice. I just wish they were open more days and more hours out of those days.

Anonymous said...

Hint! The more business you give Naby, the longer they will stay open. That's all.

Anonymous said...

Anon, to that end, we went to Naby's last night and had their delicious jerk shrimp. They also stayed open past eight, so maybe their website has old hours.

Had it not been for these guys, I don't know if we would have ever tried Jamaican food, but ever since discovering Naby's, we've been hooked.

Do they still have the bright, industrial, florescent lighting? Just wondering. I personally find the overhead lighting unappetizing and shows way too many facial blimishes when there on a date!

-Vain

Anonymous said...

If you are going to be worried about facial blemishes on a date, then maybe you 1)you shouldn't be on that date, or 2)you should turn your attention to how good Naby's food, is instead of blemishes or a lighting scheme. People are way to harsh on the places that are trying to make this neighborhood nice.

inked said...

The lighting is pretty nice, and the curried chicken I tried was good. Give it a shot.

Thanks for your comments. To reiterate, we are not the same owners as the Tropicana on Florida Avenue or 12th street...or any of the others. :)

Re other comments:
Delivery is something that we would strongly consider if the demand is strong enough.

We offer water and several all natural juices including carrot juice.

We do not have flourescent lights and offer an environment very conducive for a blemish-free first date :)

yes, we are having problems with our email address and our trying to fix.

and lastly....
We are having our GRAND OPENING on Saturday August 2, 11 am. Please stop by to taste some of our dishes and introduce yourselves! We are very excited about joining this community.

fondly,
"Tropicana on H"

Nabys on 12th and H may have good food but is it really a resturant that offers a nice atmosphere to have dinner? I don't think so. Remember the Rib Tip that was there before Nabys? I didn't last and neither will Nabys. If they want to survive try and clean up that corner and get rid of the masses of people that hang out there every single day and night! People even sleep on that corner! Come on now!

I went to Tropicana for the first time tonite and have to say it was amazing. I'm a vegetarian and was going to get the curried tofu, but they were out. The amazing hostess Mala came out and said what can I do for you? I was open to anything and she said she would surprise me and made an amazing spinach dish with rice and the curried vegetables. It was a delicious home cooked meal that hit the spot. She was eager to make something else next time. Great service and very comfortable atmosphere. I highly recommend Tropicana!
