People's Drug Store

Here's a nice old photo of the People's Drug store that once operated out of 804 H Street.

Is this one of the buildings that was leveled to make way for that wonderful 80s era revitalization cornerstone, H Street Connection?

Yep. My grandfather had a shoe store on that block too. Also now leveled. Also there was a famous club that hosted Cab Calloway and other famous jazz and big band acts. Started with a K. It was razed as well. I can't wait for the "H Street Connection" to bite the dust.

You mean the Kavakos Grill?

I'm a great fan of Shorpy. Lots of old photos of the District. Note the caption at Shorpy indicates that this is 804 H street, not #841. Other historic H street area pictures at Shorpy include the Whistle Bottling Plant at 4th and E.

I think you are talking about the Koko night club.

Wrong, Kavakos preceded the Koko club.

And then also, if it's 804 H, that would be next to the PNC bank

Sorry, I don't know where I got 841.

I also want to see H St connection bite the dust. The only business worth keeping around is the cleaners, but the rest can vanish. I see nothing there but loiters, panhandlers and who knows what goes on inside the Subway sandwich shop..
It would be wonderful if we could have a bakery, and some of the other establishments that used to be on H St..

The Rite Aid is an essential part of the H St shopping environment. I'd guess that for a few thousand people, it's the closest large drug store. (I believe the closest ones are the CVS at 5th and Mass to the west, CVS at Eastern Market to the south, CVS at the Starburst intersection to the east.) Speaking as someone without a car who lives less than a 10 minute walk to the Rite Aid, it would be a huge pain if it were torn down before another good drugstore opened nearby.

I just wish that we had drug stores like that today... Now we have online pharmacies and of course Walmart:))
