The team behind Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club has graciously provided a copy of the recent ABRA investigative report [which basically gave them a clean bill of health]. This report was compiled in response to a five citizen protest of the renewal of their license. I wanted to post it here because-
1. one of the protesters recently posted a comment here summarizing the hearing, and I don't think the summary was a fair representation of the hearing and investigation [so I'm hoping the report will clear things up and add context]
2. there has been a great deal of chatter regarding the posting of the same comment left here on various listservs
The report is 60 pages, but it contains lots of photos, so it's a quick read.

I will also add that the owners of the tavern entered into a voluntary agreement with ANC 5B prior to obtaining their license, and ANC5B does not consider them to be in breach of that agreement.

I skimmed the documents and it seems that the Hendersons have a vendetta against the place. It seems like an abuse of power on the Henderson's part and deliberately trying to shut down a business that harms no one and operates in their neck of the woods.
Interestingly, while Jimmy Valentine's is located in India Henderson's SMD, is is just over the lines for two other SMDs, including my own. I've never heard a single complaint from anyone located in my SMD. My SMD is directly across the street from the tavern [the dividing line is in the middle of Bladensburg Road].

I do not understand how Kathy Henderson can keep saying that a MAJORITY of the ANC residents oppose the place, when only 6 names are on the complaint.
I opened the docs fine using firefox. I wonder if that makes a difference.
It does seem like a vendetta, but heck, who likes bars near their homes full of people who don't even live around here?
Tom, you should check the place out. All of the employees live nearby, and so do many of the patrons.
Not to mention, according to the report, it isn't noisy and the immediate neighbors are a body shop and a Merchants tire and auto.
Could Ms. Henderson be upset that a white business is opening up in her hood?
I've been to JV's a couple times and I have to say, I have never seen any bar/nightclub operation try harder than them to keep a good community profile. They ACTIVELY keep their patrons from loitering or making noise outside the establishment, which legally they have no obligation to do. It's public property. These guys should be commended for trying so hard to make this place a top-notch operation. Never mind the fact that they are bringing business and foot traffic into a troubled area.
These guys could be a hell of a lot worse neighbors and still operating within the law. The protesters might want to think about what the alternatives to Jimmy Valentine's might be. See: Wonderland.

I personally love JV but have to limit my time there since its addictive. You'd never even know its there from the street and I've never seen it rowdy and out of control. I haven't read the 60 pg report but if no one complains about the 24 hr tire repair place and all its loitering and shadiness, then how can you complain about an establishment only open Wed to Sun, 10 to 3 a.m.?? Granted they serve copious amounts of alcohol but still....they're relatively low key. and I'd say that most patrons are from nearby neighborhoods.

trust me, doctoral studies show that there is a certain "validation" that "lower socio-economic classes" (couple that with education - by the by, howard is okay today, but it was crap when kathy graduated) get by supporting their communal belief sets/patterns.

I'm not sure when you perceive Howard University was crap. Was it when they were graduating 25% of the African American Doctors in this country or when Thurgood Marshall or L. Douglas Wilder (1st Black Governor of VA) graduated..Okay well before Kathy Henderson...let's spring forward. Was it when they graduated a Rhodes Scholar in 1999 and again in 2003? I am only trying to gauge when the "crap" was being shoveled. Or was it when Hillary Clinton delivered the commencement speech in 1998? I normally don't hear the word "crap" associated with a University when such things occur. Before calling Kathy's behavior is racist (AND I CAN'T STAND HER!) ask yourself why you feel one of the most accomplished institutions of higher educated that contain a large number of African American's is "crap" And just remember...HU came into existence because of RACISM. Because the "good white folks" of this country did not want black people attending "their" institutions of higher learning. 8th and El you may have been snoozing in class. Howard University is a four-year private liberal arts university, located in Washington D.C. Chartered by the federal government in 1867, Howard was founded to train Black teachers and ministers to guide and teach the four million freed slaves and 25,000 freeborn Blacks.
Now 8th and El...not sure what history books were provided in your school or how much your family educated you on life for African-American in 1867..then called Negroes. HOWEVER, "Negroes" as black people were called in 1867 were not accepted into colleges outside of Black Colleges. Fisk, Tuskegee, Hampton, Howard etc. So my statement is correct. Howard University was founded in response to the fact that black people could not attend any other college in 1867.
I take it your post to say "Howard was founded for teachers" was some how meant to negate my statement that Howard was founded in response to Black people not having the opportunity to attend non-black colleges.
