Last Minute Halloween Reminders/Warnings

1. Keep pets inside.
2. Kids actually do trick or treat around here [pick up some candy], but no one will come to your house if you are the only one on the street that leaves on the porch light.
3. Many kids [teens are especially bad about this] will trick or treat without costumes. This is annoying, but very common. Do not be shocked. I like to reward those who do dress up with extra candy and compliments on their costumes.
4. If you want kids to take ONE piece. Ask them what they want, and give them ONE piece. If you hand them the bowl they will pretend not to hear you and grab a handful.
5. People don't typically smash pumpkins around here. Though the practice is common in many other parts of the country, it truly is rare in DC.
6. Don't be a creep and start a pumpkin smashing trend.
7. Pumpkins compost quite well, and the seeds are tasty when toasted.
8. If your Halloween plans involve alcoholic beverages, be careful walking home [take that mask off and look both ways before crossing/walking down dark streets alone] because some less responsible people are driving after drinking, and others may see an easy mark in the stumbling zombie. Use a cab if you need one, but plan ahead because they will be busy tonight.

True...I've had Jack o Lanterns out the last two years and they don't get smashed.

How do you handle adults who trick or treat? Is this just an oddity of living in the city? FTR, in the past I have given them candy - albeit awkwardly - better than provoking a negative reaction.

Yeah, I've lived in a lot of places, both bigger and smaller than DC, and DC is the first place I've ever lived where adults (middle-aged, even) trick or treat, or where people (kids and adults) trick or treat without costumes.

LOL @ an adult trick or treating. i wouldn't even open the door if i didn't see a kid.

east capitol is crazy on halloweeen. even if you aren't trick or treating, if you pass by during the day and see the displays people have set up it will take your breath away!

It's hard for me to see the problem with adults trick-or-treating. I mean, sure, it strikes me as weird, too. But I just grin and give 'em the same candy I'm giving everyone else. It's Halloween! And Halloween is awesome.
