WP: More on Recent Arrests

The Post talks about the arrest of an 18 year old [Deangelo Johnson] in the murder, on Sunday, of a 17 year old [Karon Shannon] on Simms Place. The article also mentions the recent arrest of a 17 year old Landover, Maryland youth for the April 16th murder of Darvell Stewart. Mr. Stewart, 18, was found on Owen Place.

I wish the Post was a bit more specific about where the shooter lives - it would be good to know if he lived in the neighborhood or not.

Of course DC's liberal judges will release the 17-year old back to the community, citing that incarceration would irreparably damage the prospects of him living a fruitful life.

yeah. that's exactly what'll happen anonymous....

how long have you been in dc since you moved here from arkansas?

I am a DC native. You obviously don't know our court system very well. Remember that kid who torched his grandmother's house (and the two houses next door) on L Street after threatening her with a bbgun? He was let go.

who are all the youth crowding dc's youth detention centers if 'dc's liberal judges' let all young people off without incarcerating them, as you appear to imply, anonymous dc native?

i think you're wildly overgeneralizing.

just to add on, i have NEVER heard of a case where an 18 year old accused of second degree murder utilizing a handgun in DC got off without any form of incarceration at all. find me some parallel cases to this fact pattern that resulted in probation and you have an argument. if not, take your overgeneralizations elsewhere.

Completely off topic. New buses coming on line. The X2 gets them, but only after street improvements are done. Article here.

I think Soul searcher has the correct solution. Let them hang out on the corner and let them shoot each other. Why should I pay to feed, cloth, house and educate them?

Completely off-topic again: Was there a meeting last night on H (at P&P?) where the status of the street cars were discussed? Anyone have an update from that meeting?

Anon 6:17,

The kid who torched the houses on L Street (among many other crimes he has committed) is still locked up.

anon @ 9:37,

you should read what i wrote a little more carefully. what you say you 'agree' with is not related in any way to anything i said.

then again, i don't expect much in the way of reading comprehension skills from someone who would say something as thoughtless as 'let them shoot each other'. What do you mean by 'them'? Teenagers? Sigh.

Read my initial remark more carefully. I spoke in reference to the 17-year old.

You are aware that accessing case records for juveniles is not possible?

The kid who torched the houses on L Street (among many other crimes he has committed) is still locked up.

But not for the triple-arson.

Alan Page said...

yeah, i know juvenile records are sealed, but i would be willing to accept anecdotal evidence. since you have made up your mind that DC judges are liberal, surely you have, at minimum, some anecdotal evidence to back up your conclusion, right? like name a juvenile shooter you personally know of that got off for murder with no incarceration. otherwise, your point is still moot.

excuse me for using the 18 year old example in response to your comment about the 17 year old.

i'll excuse you for painting EVERY judge in this city as liberal, a ridiculous assertion.

Alan Page said...

i'll also forgive you for assuming that every liberal judge would refuse to incarcerate a convicted murderer just because he was a year short of being legally an adult.

what on earth do you base that on?

do you personally know of any case where that happened, let alone enough cases to extrapolate an overgeneralization about every judge in DC?

Sit down and talk to any trial lawyer from USAO and you will hear non-stop anecdotal evidence of the liberal orientation of DC judges.

Moreover almost any officer from MPD can attest how often our central cell block is closed down due to manpower shortages, over-crowding, environmental threats, etc. Sure there are contingency plans, but lots of people are booked and sent back to the streets!
