Late Friday night a fire ripped through Rose's Dream [1370 H Street] severely damaging the bar. Also damaged were Caribbean Best [owned by the same family] and the building that was formerly home to the Majestic.

nooo, don't replace the multi-paned windows with boring one-over-ones!

The link to Rose's takes you to an attack site that is loaded with malware. I would not advise visiting...

What's with all the fires... the last one was linked to a homeless guy, correct?

Seems suspicious to have two fires in this stretch of businesses in such a short timeframe.

Kenny G,
the new version of Firefox does indeed throw up a warning before you head to the Rose's Dream site. I've had the same warning pop up for innocent sites before. There could be something funny, but I suspect that the new version is just being overprotective.

De-U.c.e. Double,
Rose's Dream was a cool, very laid back, place, and the family that owns it consists of very nice people. I hope they are able to rebuild quickly.

1250,
I've heard various things about the fire in the 1200 block. My guess is that this latest one probably will be found to be related to an electrical issue. We live around a lot of old buildings, and sometimes the wiring isn't maintained correctly, or it is updated in a slip-shod manner. I live on a double block, but I'm aware of at least five fires on my block [including the sides, and across the street] over the past three years. At least two resulted from cigarettes, and one may have been a child playing with matches. But wiring is a major safety issue.

makes sense.

let's be proactive and watch out for new "electrical fires" in the next few months...

shall we?

cuz they're happening often.

i'm sure it's just random...

AHEM....

just saying....

Its easy enough to make one pane windows look like multi-pane (transom) windows. They aren't "real" multi-pane windows, but if that's the look you want for a business, that's the economical way to go.

I hope they had good insurance and can get back up again quickly. Caribbean Best is one of the few quality lunch options on this stretch of H Street (most places are only open in the evening) and the family that runs it seem to be good people. Haven't been to Rose's Dream, but I think both businesses are run by the same family.

Anon 9:39- Transom window isn't what is being described here. A transom window is a small window above a door or another window which generally goes horizontally. They're common in this neighborhood.

What is being described is technically referred to as "divided lites". I don't know why they spell "lites" that way. A multi-pane window refers to a window with two to three panes (pieces of glass), one in front of the other. Modern windows are usually double (two) paned. Originally all houses and businesses in this area had single paned windows.

It's not Firefox judging the website to be pushing malware, but Google; Firefox checks with a Google registry of websites that have appeared to Google's indexers/crawlers to be making malware available. That's why the "Why was this site blocked?" link sends you to a page written by the folks at Google.

Google's explanation for marking www.rosesdream.com as pushing malware: "Of the 3 pages we tested on the site over the past 90 days, 2 page(s) resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent. The last time Google visited this site was on 2009-01-11, and the last time suspicious content was found on this site was on 2009-01-10."

I'm sorry to hear about this. Any word on rebuilding vs closing up for good?

I remember the fire trucks that night/morning. Living around here you get used to sirens but there were so many on Friday we actually got out of bed to peek out the windows.
