Argonaut in Washingtonian's Top 75 Bars

The list is not online, but I recently saw that the Argonaut made Washingtonian's top 75 bars list. I'm not sure what other H Street establishments may have also made the list (the Argonaut entry was pointed out to me).

Hi there - you can see the bar picks that didn't fit into the print issue here: http://www.washingtonian.com/bars

Annoyingly, the only place to see the list of top 75 bars is in their PRINT version. I guess there wasn't enough space on the internet for the actual article.

Is there any place to get this "fine periodical" on H street?

The Pug made it too. Go Tony go! You must be doing somthing right, it could be the cheese balls.

Granville Moore's also made the print list!

Came across the H Street Country Club website: http://www.thehstreetcountryclub.com/

Nothing new, but the logo is kind of cool.

How many bars are there in DC? Anyone know?

76

81 bars in DC

I believe there are officially about 900 bars and restaurants in D.C. (CT and CR designations)

Tom: You seems surprised they'd have content in the magazine that's not on their website; but since they don't make any money at all off their website, I'd be surprised if they *didn't* have content exclusive to the print version.

The DC metro area has lots of bars, and I believe the article probably also included places in the suburbs.

The suburbs are included.

Here's the actual text of the write-up from the Magazine:

One of the first bars to open in DC's H Street corridor, the Argonaut is a playful, low-key tavern suitable for both after-work drinks or a sit-down meal of good bar food. With a spacious patio and a cozy nautical themed interior, the bar may not be the fanciest spot in town, but it's one of the most comfortable.
The food is tasty too - try the sweet potato fries. During happy hour, 5 to 7 weekdays, rail drinks and select beers are $4.

I'd like to pass on some customer feedback to the Argo folks, though. Last time we were there, it was *freezing* in the main dining room. I'd say it was mid 60's in there. All the patrons, us included kept their coats, hats and scarves on while eating. The other thing was the grilled cheese sandwich...it was pretty much dry toasted bread w/ melted cheese and tomato slice in between.
I want the Argo to succeed and thrive, but it seems every time I go there's something that doesn't quite cut it, and if other customers are having the same experience, it could lead to a slow tailing off of repeat customers. I know I can go to Sidamo and get an *awesome* grilled cheese for the same price that's good every time and I can go to Napa for an *awesome* Sunday brunch for about the same price. I hope next time I go to the Argo everything's similarly great. Or maybe I'll just get shouted down here by all the Argo fans :-)

I, too, would like to offer the Argonaut some customer feedback. Recently on kids-eat-free night, my friends + I requested to sit in the bar cove as we were expecting a party of 4 + were w/out kids. We were turned down b/c the mgmt was expecting their own friends w/ kids. Considering that we were the first guests that night before the Romper Room arrived, it would have been great to sit there...I thought it was illegal to have kids sitting in the bar area?!

Trinidad Queen - did you make a reservation? Sounds like sour grapes to me. Don't go on Romper Room night if it bugs you.

We are thrilled as a family that the Argonaut is one of Washington's Top 75 Bars this year. It is our H Street restaurant of choice. If anyone wants a reliably good meal, try the fish tacos. As for "Romper Room," we very much appreciate the family friendly attitude at the Argonaut. If you want to miss the kids, go LATE (not early) -- they'll all be back home in bed.
