Another fun evening on Gales - at about 5:30 (Weds) there was a call for a fire on 16th and Gales (on Gales) which resulted in several fire trucks and cruisers being called out. From what I heard, the fire was caused by towels - apparently in the laundry? It ended up being nothing major - some smoke. Never a dull moment.

I'm a little confused by the specification that the shooting did not occur on Rosedale Rec Center grounds? It happened on the side walk directly in front of the center-correct? So, yes it wasn't technically on the grounds but at the rec center regardless.

Initial rumors said the shooting occurred at the Rec. I'm not specifically familiar enough with the location to say what this difference might mean. But there is some difference between an individual being shot on the street/sidewalk versus being shot at/in the Rec.

Yeah, I do agree there is a difference somewhat. The sidewalk looks down onto an outside area of the rec center. Everyone hangs out on this divide (a railing). I guess I just wanted to know why this distinction was made because I still saw what happened (literally) as an event that happened "at/outside of the rec center". I guess I was just concerned that a separation was trying to be made from this event and it's location at/near/on the sidewalk in front of the rec center.

This rec center is not functioning as I would love to see one function in our community. Right now it's basically a shell of a building where of folks hang out all hours of the day. There are lots of fights, noise, drugs and no one around to maintain the center the way a DC rec center should be ran to support our community and it's residents.

And...maybe I just needed to vent. This continual violence is a tough thing.

There's a new Rosedale rec center scheduled to be built. And several of our community leaders have tried to get a buy in from the community to support it with promises of a pool, and a library. However, the parents (4 blocks west)on my street will never allow their kids to go because of tradional turf issues. I don't blame them, since in fact, folks have been killed there.

The parks and recreation center folks have moved toward centralizing all of their services for quite a while, and while it may help management, and budget wise, it certain isn't great for the kids. As noted by mcc, there is no supervision, and the hours are very limited. And now, we are putting our libraries in the same warehouse.

MCC -

Here is the information we received from MPD, LT. Renato Coldwell (renato.caldwell@dc.gov) after being asked to clarify were the incident occurred, "That's correct it did not occur inside or on the recreation grounds. It occurred on the street near the recreation center."

Admittedly, that could be the street/sidewalk bordering the Recreation Center.

I would argue that more resources and services centrally located, say at a recreation center, allows a broader range of users, not just geared for youth. The idea is to create a community center where all can meet and use the facility and programs. The hope is if more folks use the facility/programs, the chronic crime around the center will dissipate. We’ll have to see. BTW, there will not be a library branch built along with the new community center, though a Library program (supported by the Library system) and allocated space could be included.

The new Rosedale community center will break ground May 13 and continue through September 2010. There Mayor will be on hand for the ceremony. The new community center will be similar to the recently completed La Salle Community Center, see RCA's blog posts:
