Fox5: Construction Hurts Businesses on H

Fox 5 reports on the fact that all the streetscape construction is putting the damper on business at nearby H Street spots. I'd say it's an inevitable, but extremely unfortunate reality. Let's hope DDOT stays on schedule for this one and actually does finish in 2011. In related news, Fire Burn.

This would have to be the "NO DUH" news story of the year so far. Thanks, Fox5. You guys are really on top of your game!

To the H Street Business Owners:

Keep your head up. Be patient. It will all work out in the end.

What about the residents? It's been a nightmare. The temporary construction plates are so poorly installed that they make a huge racket all night long. No one is getting any sleep!

In addition, our ANC 6A website will be posting the bi-weekly construction update (www.anc6a.org). However, at the moment, the link is broken (I will have it fixed shortly). In the meantime, here is the summary from the last report:

o Resident complaints regarding steel plates.
o Steel plates at 5th
o The B. F. Joy Company (“Joy”) is taking corrective action on steel plates throughout work zone. and H Street have been removed.
o Intersection of 4th
o Track installation and H will be backfilled by 3/20 and the majority of the steel plates will be removed on the south side. Joy will perform a lateral crossing at this intersection. Steel plates will be placed at this location until tie-in at the existing manhole is complete. Date of completion tentatively set for 3/31/09.

There should not be any construction going on between 12AM and 6AM.

If the Streetcars can do for H st what the Metro did for U st and Columbia Heights, I can wait. I hope businesses can too

FYI, the city and contractors are making a lot of information about the project available on the ddot.dc.gov website. Includes wonderfully detailed schedule and progress reports on construction. Shocking (sarcasm) that FOX did not seem to take the time to research any of this info. Not sure how to post links here, but here is the URL:
