NYT: Blogging the Pre-Opening

The New York Times has an interesting piece on restaurants and the blogs that cover them before they open.

Is the Sweet Shop closed for good? It was closed last weekend. Anyone been there since the burglary?

I disagree with the author of this article. I think anticipation is great, at least in areas like ours were the demand is still high. I believe the success of Sticky Rice and Granville Moore's is in part due to the excitement that comes with knowing what's to come. The corollary would be Napa 1015 and Pap and Petey's, both of whom have struggled to build a consistent customer base and neither had as much coverage/buildup here on FT. (Not that I'm faulting Elise; I think the owner/managers of both establishments underestimated the power of using this tool for marketing).

Sweets and Treats was burgled by thieves that went through the roof. a computer and some other items were taken.

as more stuff has started to happen on H Street I have begun to rely on owners of open places to send me their stuff that they want posted. I do have an east end bias because I live there [so I see that stuff everyday and am thus able to report on it easily]. I am interested in the west end, but right now most of the action is on the east end. I am always happy to post menus, ect.

Inked you have given both of those businesses a lot of mention ... and I specifically recall several posts about P&P before they opened.

If there is a difference in the level of interest, it probably has something to do with the nature of the places. Some places are more interesting than others.

I totally disagree that Napa has not built a consistent customer base. They have a strong core of very committed customers thanks to their delicious food and their commitment to customer satisfaction.
Seems from what I see through the window in the evening & when we've visited that the "new" P&P is doing a good job, too.

I hear ya, but the big difference is that FT is a neighborhood blog mostly frequented by neighborhood folks. We were all hyped up to have someplace where you could sit down to eat that wasn't Popeye's and seem to be pretty invested in the success of good establishments in our 'hood. Those blogs mentioned in the Times are "Foodie" blogs where they dissect the excruciating minutiae of every single aspect of a restaurant.

Have you ever been to the local foodie message board DonRockwell.com? There are some cool folks on that board, but there are also a lot of obnoxious people trying to one up each other with their knowledge of mostly irrelevant nonsense. I can understand why a restaurateur wouldn't want to be under that kind of scrutiny.
