A look at what's going on in Trinidad, on H Street, and in the larger area north of Capitol Hill.

Car Versus Checker's Part II
Early Saturday evening a car that had been parked at the Checker's crashed through a fence adjacent to the parking lot. Apparently the driver failed to shift into reverse. The fence separated the parking lot from the front of a house on MD Ave. Two individuals were sitting in chairs in the front yard drinking. When the car crashed through it knocked the men from their chairs onto the ground. Police, and ambulance, and firetrucks reported to the scene. A friend who ran over to check it out reported that it was difficult to say if the two men were seriously injured (or just jolted) due to their level of intoxication. Apparently the driver (who did not appear to be intoxicated) knew at least one of the men he hit.

Anyone else hear the huge boom/explosion late Saturday night, just before midnight?
Provided those two gentlemen are ok, that's gotta be one of the funnier H Street stories I've heard yet. Couldn't tell if they were injured or just drunk? Classic!!
Yes, I did hear the booms. I think there were 3 or 4 in a row and they were pretty loud. I didn't hear any sirens afterwards or anything. I think "fireworks or gunshots?" season has started already.
Yeah, I heard them too. First there was one and then the several in succession about ten minutes later. I couldn't tell what it was - didn't really sound like gunshots (too deep of a sound)...
Exactly . . . it was not exactly a gun shot. I actually thought, "great, now they have canons." And it wasn't similar to a car back firing, either.
I sincerely hope that the poor guys on their front lawn by Checkers are okay. There's not much better than enjoying a few cold ones outside while watching traffic go by. Being clobbered by a car would really ruin the moment.
I second that I hope the residents are ok. No matter what they were doing, no matter how low people value them, they have value and didn't deserve that.

we heard the first boom bout couldn't identify it. The next series of slightly different booms came from someone setting of fireworks from the basketball court by Sherwood Recreation Center.
i am officially a jaded urbanite.
when you said "great, now they have cannons", i guffawed loudly.
Those big "BOOMS" go off throughout the summer. They used to do it at least once a week when we moved in a few years ago.
Shortly after it went off, firetrucks and police cars cruised through the area.
It is just a big noisemaker of a firework though, might set off a car alarm.
To whoever made the "great, now they have cannons" remark, that's one of the funniest things I've ever read on this blog. Good stuff.
