DDOT To Excelerate Streetscape Work

In case you haven't seen it yet, DDOT issued a press release Thursday saying they will have crews working double shifts to expedite the construction. Under this new plan, all street car tracks along Benning Road should be laid down by the end of 2009 (the earlier deadline was December 2010).

What about H Street! Please!

H Street people (including the Council member) don't have the juice to get anything done.

How did the "not in the planning for 5 years" street in front of Eastern Market get remodeled so quickly? I can assure you that it's not because Eastern Market merchants bring in more sales taxes than H street merchants.

Has no one seen the HstNE banners? Why no comments?

The H street banners are nice but kind of a joke, Let's not pretend that it's a hot spot because it's SO NOT! Maybe in three years or so!

anon, 9:53,
I'd disagree. Not only do we have some eating spots that pull people in from outside the area, but we also have two theaters (one performing arts center), and some live music venues. The Red & the Black and Rock & Roll Hotel are big venues in DC. Palace of Wonders has acts you can't catch elsewhere.

I'd call that a hot spot. Or at least the patrons who come in from outside the neighborhood probably would, not to mention the Post, the Times, the City Paper, the Express, DCist, and the Times (and non-DC national/international media). But feel free to disagree. I could be wrong.

The Community Editor of the Washingtonian, has this to say about H St.:

When it comes to nightlife, Leaman recommends skipping the crowded Adams Morgan neighborhood, especially on a weekend, and instead head to the Atlas District on H Street, NE. “It’s DC’s up-and-coming nightlife gem,” she says, “with all sorts of bars, music venues, and restaurants to check out.”

Fisrt,Does this means that H Street is back on schedule for trollys? Second, The banners on H street are a riot,it looks as if they were purchased from the Dollar store or the first stong wind will tear them apart. Finally, does anybody know what type of retail is going into the new apartment building @ 3RD.

The banners are ok. A busy design and lacking in bold symbols and color. Pretty much a waste of money. However they are much better than the silly ones that that they had years ago with all of the alphabet on them.

Wow, nice to come back to the Church of H street. I can't figure out in this time of budget cuts to critical services, that we are wasting money on such a boondoggle.

I just spent a few days, in a formally run down commercial strip, that's now one of the worlds goal standards in urban revitalization.

H isn't that, it isn't close to that. It's not for lack of clout, it's lack of a common vision, and a strategy to achieve that vision (with enforcement).

There's a bunch of gadflies, some brave developers, and government officials happy for anything regardless of quality. And that's the problem. W/o a common vision (planning), and strategy to achieve it (implementation or mission execution), H will keep being the place people run to, go for a while, then get disappointed by and go elsewhere.

I've said it before, and having seen better, both here and elsewhere, H is not ready for prime time.

It's grungy (Some people like that), there's no cohesive planning around it, the places seem spread out and random, and it seems segregated a bit - not sure why, but in a city that's... well same can be said for Adams Morgan the new 14th street, etc.

But's it's ice to be back in church.

H Street, Peace be upon it, and also with you.

I like the banners. Same logo as the shuttle. Nice.

The banners, the shuttle, the H Street main Street logo all were designed by Design Army, http://www.designarmy.com/flash/index.html
They have offices at 5th and H.

The city actually has a plan for H Street, set down several years ago. The 3-6 hundred block are designated Live/Work resulting the Abdo/Senate Square and the eventual building at 3rd and H.
The middle blocks are designated for retail and the 1200-1500 hundred are the Arts and Entertainment district.

H Street and Eastern Market share the same council Member, Tommy Wells who is pretty dedicated to the idea of a streetcar. The difference is that the H Street job is much bigger and far reaching the the Eastern market redo. There are many more decisions to be made, DDOT apparently has plans for the eventual remaking of the entire city's transportation system but you have to get the entire council on board and then have the council decide to push the H street line over the Anacostia line.

The Anacostia is easier because they don't have the political problem of the overhead wires rule...there are some people in the Hill community who despite being in favor of streetcars, will fight them if they go with the overhead wire system.

They also have to decide where the H Street line will end...and apparently the Benning road bridge is not strong enough to support a streetcar...

Robby, I can't understand a word you are saying. Have you ever been to H street NE?

In this time of budget cuts, it's a question of priorities.

Can someone please tell me what the overhead wires are lining H street right now? Does anyone else not see them? Aren't they for the street cars?

Anonymous said...

The current overhead lines on HstNE are for traffic lane closures. As they work on different lanes they will use the overhead lines (& signs) to close lanes cars should not use so they can do their work.

Robby,

Wouldn't you at least agree that Benning Rd needs some serious TLC, streetcar or no?

Thank God Robby has all the answers.
