As I've mentioned before, that lovely time of year is upon us that not only does the mercury rise, but so do some sorts of crime. All around the city summer muggings are occurring. Today an acquaintance told me that she was nearly mugged by three boys about 12-13 years old. This occurred on Capitol Hill on a lower numbered street and D. The woman noticed the three boys, but didn't pay them any mind because she didn't consider them a threat. One of the three shoved her to the ground and then punched and kicked her in the head. He then tried to grab her purse. She yelled that she would tell his mother. The boys ran off, and she gave chase. Police responded immediately, but I don't know if they picked the kids up. This happened around 9:30pm last night.
So be careful, not fearful, but careful. And if you hear someone yelling for help, open the door/look out the window with cell phone in hand (then actually call the cops). Thankfully, people did that last night. Getting kicked in the head isn't a joke.

got a better description of the suspects or a phone number for the officer on the report or investigating officer (if there is one) for people to call if they might know who those little punks were or might be?
Call 911 if you have a description of the kids, or any suspected perp of a crime.
Hi, anybody popping up and reading this this morning (Saturday)...Ron, the executive chef from Napa, will be doing a cooking demo at the Farmers Market this morning. Starting @ 10:30.
I hope that woman's ok.
Will this ever stop, you know we live in a big city folks.
anon,
What do you want stopped, the crime or peoples reaction to crime? I can't tell by your post...

1. dc isn't big. you should travel a bit.
2. should we accept crime? thats your solution?
Also watch out for the kids throwing rocks at cars. Got hit yesterday evening on 3rd south of H St NE.
4 boys 8-13 yoa were in the neighborhood 11th and H NE this week they supposedly live on M NE. (never saw them before)They broke a car window while throwing rocks all over our neighborhood while riding brand new bikes. Cops were called. The cops arrived and spoke to one of the adult neighbors then drove off. Never spoke to the kids. When it was suggested by a neighbor in ear shot of the kids that if their folks could afford brand new bikes they could pay for the broken window. They dumped their bikes and ran off. The bikes was gone several minutes later not sure if the kids returned to get them. But, notifying MPD-1 list server only gets everyone a lot of heartache. Majority of neighbors came out and stood on porches it was great unity. But makes no sense why the cops did not speak to the kids. It was clear the kids were not afraid of the cops. The kids have not been back. But sounds like could be the same group.
Some cops are really lazy. By not talking to the kids, no crime was committed, and no paper work to write up and file.
So that I can be on the look out for these three 12-13 year old boys, am I to look for black, white, or hispanic? That piece of the description was left out. Seems that would be helpful information.
I don't have a description. I'm not asking anyone to be on the lookout for any specific kids, just warning people to be careful generally. The only way you would know who the kids were would be if you were one of the people that saw the kids run off and you recognized the kids. I only used the story as a reminder that people need to be aware of their surroundings. Sometimes danger isn't where you think it is hiding.
Just got an instant message from a close friend on 1300 block of D Street, NE. 8 African-American males, all under 15 yrs based on appearance, arrested for assaulting and attempted robbery of a European-American female about an hour ago. Welcome to August 2009.
Anonymous 5:20, your kidding right? What "color" are the children who attacked a woman at dusk? Are you new to town? Maybe your like I was once, a free thinker until my car, house, friends car, friends house were broken into after we all first arrived to town. I've read many blogs in DC during the summer, and I don't mean to start a racial discussion, however, the groups of "youths" are generally never hispanic or white in the district -- or not that I've seen reported in recent memory.
Are we sure it wasn't 8 European-American kids that attacked an African-American woman?
Thank you Anon. 5:20 for your sarcasim since no one else had the balls to describe the (likely) race of these three thugs as black - a description that would have been useful informatin for basic public safey. And thank you 8:08 for letting us know these were 8 African-American males.
Seems people are afraid of saying these days out of fear of offending someone, but I find these criminal behaviors MUCH more offensive. As I would think most people would including the African-Americans that I know.

I think there was a roving group of aleutian eskimos youth. When it gets hot out they're know to go outside of their traditional hunting grounds and stir up trouble.
The woman is white, and in (I think) her late 40s/early 50s). They kids were black. She didn't know them, and didn't give a further description. Obviously, I'm not going to tell people to watch out for three young black males because that could be any given group of kids around here.
Just FYI:
A young (early 20s) black guy I know got held up about 8 months ago by a latino kid (at gun point) just outside the NY Ave metro. The night before last another guy I know was assaulted in the triangle intersection of Florida and 12th. They were waiting to cross with the light when a random drunk dude exited the passenger side of a vehicle and pushed the male (this was a male female friend duo) to the ground and stated that the male "Was just lucky the light was green." Neither member of the duo had ever seen the guy before. He was described to me as white, with a shaved head, and in his 20s.
So racial group has a complete monopoly on creepy behavior around here.
We are equal opportunity on the asshole front.
So I repeat myself, stay aware, stay safe, and call the cops. Most people of any color will never hurt you, but there do exist some freaks of all colors/races that will seek to f**k you up for any reason, or no reason. BE SAFE.
I meant that NO racial group has a monopoly on crime around here. The majority of assailants are probably black, but so are most of the residents where I live. I think it's safe to say most of them don't run around robbing people.
One of my claims with the original post was to point out that kids who are 12-13, though they should not be feared, should not be ignored either.
I moved here the summer after college and dated a black girl (a continuation from college) who grew up in the suburbs of Cincinnati. As we walked the streets she often felt uncomfortable because lots of guys of all ages would hit on us both. While I advised her to be aware of the behavior of guys of all ages (it was mostly the dudes 25 and older that freaked her out), I also pointed to stats about age 16 being the peak age for property crime arrests in the US, and 18 for violent crime.
So my point is just that people should always be aware, but also be educated (again, without being afraid) about which groups are most likely to post certain harms.
I think another one of my friends put it well when he talked about how his brother fearlessly chased off 30 something aged crack dealers on the corner. Once you have turned 30 in the game you've learned how to survive. You've either been to prison, and don't want to go back, or you've learned to avoid it. Either way, you just care about selling drugs, and you want to stay away from drama.
If you have a problem with the police not doing what you think is proper you can all the watch commander. The number for the 6th District watch commander is 202-437-7632 they can likely give you the other districts watch commanders numbers if you are not in the 6th district. The watch commander is the commanders representative after hours. I have found them VERY helpful when I do not get satisfaction from the police on any issue. If he gets calls from 10 neighbors about the same situation you bet your @ss he will take strong action. If you still dont think you get satisfaction you can call/email the police chief, she actually will reply to the email and put you in touch with one of her representatives at the HQ's level to take action.
Don't just let issues go and let the steam build up. Build a relationship with the watch commanders, your PSA reps and others that are there to help us. I drive them nuts and our neighborhood is better for it. We are NEVER overlooked anymore.
Russ
maybe you can make this blog like the PC local news in the mid 90's and not offer descriptions of the suspects for fear of offending....the suspects, I guess. It always confused me.
In addition to a crimewave, dc seems to be stricken with GATEZ-CROWLEY syndrome
This is a crimewave? I thought it was city living, especially when you live on the outer edges of gentrification. BTW, violent crime in DC is down.
15 year olds, huh? Time for a root beer summit
3 teens were involved in an altercation in front of the PUG last night. I heard a gun was involved, I was not there. They said it may have been the same teens that have been robbing people.
A couple weeks ago my friend who lives in that area of Capitol Hill was robbed at gunpoint by a kid. The kid was apprehended almost immediately and the only things still at issue are the charges he faces and a matter of twenty stolen dollars.
Apparently after the kid asked her to "give me everything you got," she asked him what he needed, and he said "money for a train." $20 was enough to send him off satisfied and scare my friend to pieces.
Outside the Pug is not the smartest place to try to rob someone with all the cops that hang out there.
Nope. From what i heard, cops poured out, the kids dropped the gun and ran. One was caught and the others got away, but they know the area where they must have run into a house. I wasn't there, this is all hearsay.
Isn't there some useful government program out there that can help these young black men?
Handguns? I didn't realize we were allowed to have them in DC -- I know the SCOTUS said something about that recently -- however I didn't realize a licensed a gun dealer had set up shop in the district to sell them. I'll look into getting a one, with training and a permit after I work 50-60 hours this week, get the kids to bed and pay my taxes.
Anon 2:39, in a perfect world where parents took responsibility for their children, you wouldn't need to ask that question. Perhaps there are community groups out there who can assist?
I wish people would stop writing off crime as part of "living in the city." Even with crime down, DC is is afflicted with far more crime per capita than dozens of other major US cities, and part of the reason is its residents have just sort of accepted this kind of BS as a price of living in DC. It's a total disgrace.
