Good morning residents,
The DC Department of Public Works and Councilmember Jim Graham have launched the second year of the MuralsDC program, created to replace illegal graffiti with artistic works, to help revitalize communities and teach young people the art of aerosol painting. This initiative positively engages DC youth and has been successful in deterring future acts of graffiti vandalism on the property.
District citizens may have their residential (or commercial property) considered as a potential mural site if they are privately owned and highly visible from the street. Residents also must be willing to sign an agreement form authorizing use of this space for the mural (which will be approximately 10 x 20 feet).

oboe - that bridge is called Hop-Scotch Bridge and you can sponsor one of those kids on the fence. At least that is what I read on the sign there.

What does that even mean?
The hop scotch kids were done as a project by the Childrens museum. Last I heard, the museum is moving across the river to National Harbor Place. Maybe we can sell the bridge to Harbor place too.
IBC: What that comment means is that you can sponsor one of the tile "children" that appear on hopscotch bridge (H St going over the train tracks). From just casual observation, I think sponsoring one gets your name on a plaque below the "child"...not sure where the money goes.
off topic: does anyone know what happened to Tropicana? they've been closed for several days now and today i noticed a big "For Lease" banner out front.

Ro: They been closed for at least a month now. They didn't pay their rent apparently. I think I saw that on a sign from the landlord.
One of the financial partners had control of a large portion of the money and was (for unrelated reasons) given a choice between a short term of incarceration, or deportation. He chose deportation and took the money when he left. Without that money the remaining partner couldn't make it.

That stinks. I haven't been around much this summer, so I haven't had the chance to eat there recently, but I loved their food. I guess Naby's will do, which BTW, is a fine substitute.
I heard that there will be a new sports bar and restaurant at the corner of 6th & H St. with seating for fifty.

I was sorry to see it go. Excellent value and nice folks. We used to go there as an inexpensive but clean and pleasant sit down. They had a good atmosphere going for relatively "fast food."
Very sorry to hear how it went down for them, but glad there were other reasons besides lack of business.

@anon 10:31- I was hanging out in front of where I live ( I seem to be doing this more lately since being unemployed) and the owner came over and spoke to me about what he has been doing. He mentioned that he will be opening a sports bar that will be able to seat 50 and serve lunch & dinners with intent to have outdoor seating in the future. Also, possible deliveries.
I told him he needs to bring in the neighbors and get them on his side early on because there will be issues. I stated that I noticed work was being done and no permits were posted (permits are required for all stages of work and are to be posted on site until the work is completed). Lately an Elect Permit was posted for a restaurant A-2 use.
When I talk with him again, I will encourage him to have a neighborhood talk.
