Good, creative specials. I'm happy to hear this. I also think they should have one very affordable or specially priced beer available at all times. Many bars do a "beer of the month" for $3 and it allows the unemployed and poorer among us (myself included) to not feel guilty splurging on a night out.
What are they doing about reducing the level of douchery?
Joe Englert said:
This is a very broad concept. This isn't a hipster bar or a indie rock and roll club. This is a place that is looking to bring in a much more diverse and wide audience, including kids and parents on the weekends.
It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but a business like this on H is good to bring in many people from other parts of town who wouldn't ordinarily come to H for the more esoteric stuff.
In a word, bullshit. I am all for having every little kid between here and Baltimore on H during the day, but Preppy and Plaid Thursdays? Are you serious? In no less than two months the HSCC has become the bane of this street's existence. If you are from Arlington and you're reading this, STAY HOME. We have crime and guns and needles everywhere!!! You would be much more comfortable in Adam's Morgan, and Clarendon. H St. doesn't need your business, your high-fives, your Jager-Bomns, or your striped shirts.
Anon 4:09--
Wow. You must not be a property owner around here. I can't stand the arlington set any more than you can but all I see is little dollar signs walking around with popped collars when those guys roll through.
And they don't get in my way of having a good time at all.
PS--lighten up.
Ok, so three bucks for a DOS EQUIS is supposed to get me excited? for about four hours a week?
DE is a low end beer, i don't care how many commercials you watch.
I was recently in San Diego. The entertainment district there is 10 times more popular/cool/fun than H street. Once place I went had a four -hour happy hour EVERY DAY with EVERY DRINK HALF PRICE. and the regular price of a good local microbrew draft was less than what the cUNTtry club charges for a Dos Equis.
This place is a ripoff, pure and simple.
Wow. The boneheads are out.
Anon 5:02, the Pug has lots of great deals, but not every place has to be the Pug.
If your broke-ass can't afford a beer on H St., you should high-tail it to San Diego.
please....please.....please this not called for.If you dont like what Joe is offering, there are other options.
1.Start your own bar/resturant.
2.Stay home.
3.Don't patronize the establishment.
It's so funny when certain people complain about other people, who are having fun and living their lives, "discovering" the neighborhood they've lived in for 2 years during their carpetbagger stint in this city. I'm one of the people who grew up here, loves it and doesnt use it as a stopover on my way back out to the burbs... somewhere... probably in whitebread Portland where you can feel cool around people exactly like you while you scoff at happy people living their "ordinary" lives everyday dressed in "lame" clothes.
By the way, Joe, love your establishments. I like the idea of bringing people together, rather than discouraging people whom certain people (ie anon 3:14) don't like because of the way they look. How come most people can't see the blatant hypocrisy in the way they live their lives? "Yeah, I am a huge liberal and I don't judge people... unless they look douchey or like they don't belong in my bar/area... even though I don't know them and they could actually be really nice for all i know. still, F em!"
One of the funnier threads in a while. One of the things I like about H-street is that I figure the sheer number of small store fronts on the mile-long stretch ensures that there will always be room for the eclectic and that no one place will be able to define the street.
I seriously doubt we'll look like Georgetown until we're all waaaay too old to give a damn (or have a clue) about the coolness of the neighborhood bar clientele.
Amen anon 6:04. Just because someone happens to be wearing a collared shirt doesn't automatically make them a douchebag, or mean they live in Arlington. I haven't noticed any noticeable change in my H Street spots since CC opened up. "The bane of the street's existence"? Please.
Yeah, I've got to agree w/ the property owner comment above. What did Joe say it takes to build one of these places out? Two, three, 500 thousand dollars? I'll defer to his business decisions while people start bidding up houses in my neighborhood so they can be close to all this stuff.
As one of the original patrons of the Capitol Lounge (yes, I am a former public servant, otherwise known as one of those evil Hill staffers), and someone that lives very close to the Argonaut and the Country Club, I thank you Big Joe for your investments in our neighborhood. Not many others have had the balls to do so. I love these anonymous posers who love to criticize, but can't even sign their name. The Silent Majority cheers you on.
I love peaches!
Woe be to anyone on here who strays from the party line.
It's not about 'straying from the party line.'
It's about making asinine anonymous comments from the safety of your basement apartment.
If you're actually doing something to improve the neighborhood, sign in and say so. If you're just here to hate, you're going to get smacked in return by those of us who would prefer H Street alive and busy.
I don't go to plenty of the places on H, but I'd rather they be open and active than shuttered and abandoned. Because this is my neighborhood, and I'm thrilled that the lack of a Metro stop and a three-block stretch that's completely shut down after 5 PM isn't enough to keep people away from businesses that are actually making a go of it here.
As a neighborhood resident, I welcome the H Street Country Club. There's exceptional attention to detail in the interior's design, and the staff have been friendly and attentive each time I've visited. Sure, there are a lot of folks visiting from Northern Virginia and other parts of the DC area, but you can always go somewhere else if it's not your cuppa tea.
As a local restaurant/business owner (Capital City Diner), I can tell you that attempting to start a business in the city is mindbogglingly difficult, expensive, and a severe drain on one's personal life. To start a business in DC, you must have a penchant for struggling with city's processes and be *really* determined to start a business. Factor in the additional challenges assosciated with opening a restaurant or bar, and it begins to seem like something only the insane would attempt.
I'm thankful that Joe Englert and the other owners of HSCC have worked to expand options in the H Street NE community. If it's not a place you want to patronize, that's fine, but don't knock them for trying something different.
"boneheads ... broke-ass"
"basement apartment"
"smacked down"
Somebody said they find the business overpriced. They are entitled to an opinion without being attacked, just as others are entitled to their opinion.
So yeah, stick to the party line about the Emperor's New Clothes.
I love the 'emperor's new clothes' reference, as if we silly fools don't get the lameness of Englert's stuff. People that tear apart places that don't fit into their definition of 'coolness' really are so smart and rebelious.
This thread is one of the reasons why I love Frozen Tropics so much! I think the reason that many people don't like the energy created by some of the newer establishments is because H Street feels really different and special as compared to many other neighborhoods in DC. You can realy feel the love for the neighborhood with all of these comments.
Does anyone care about "preserving" the feel of Adams Morgan or Georgetown? Probably not. I feel the love for H Street!
Matt:
How are things coming on the diner? I drove by last night and wondered how things are progressing.
Looking forward to your opening.
PG, I'm also a former evil Hill staffer -- now an evil Hill lobbyist and would like to associate myself with your comments regarding Joe's enterprises. Thank you Joe. I remember when one could get a buffet lunch at Cap Lounge when it first opened -- thank for all the places you've taken a chance on since. As for the haters, chill, buy you a drink?
Anonymous 7/9 1:13 (seriously, how hard is it to put something...anything to take even the slightest bit of ownership for your comment?),
My "basement apartment" comment was meant to be an H Street equivalent of the typical anonymous internet troll (Comic Book Guy type living in his mom's basement). Few of us in this neighborhood still live with their moms, so I figured it was the next best thing.
It was also aimed at Anonymous 7/8 4:09's comments: "STAY HOME." "H St. doesn't need your business,"
Those aren't opinions...they're the kinds of comments that give a neighborhood like ours a bad name.
So my bad for not directing my comment more explicitly at someone who couldn't be bothered to sign theirs...you can see how it gets confusing.
As for the call for cheaper options on H Street - I'm all for them. All you need to do is go back and read my comments on Napa 1015's earliest menus to see that I also think that some of the places on H Street are going overboard in their prices.
And a big cheer to Napa 1015, by the way, for responding to that criticism with a new menu that seems to be less expensive across the board. Can't wait to get over there and try some stuff!
haven't had the opportunity to go to hscc yet, but based on the buzz from friends from all over the area, it's only a matter of time. for those who aren't impressed with the crowd, and have nothing better to do than complain...please don't let the emergence of reality tv fool you into thinking your opinion counts for anything. joe englert and all the pioneering entrepreneurs on h street deserve respect and support for what the have contributed to this community. they have brought hope to a place that desperately needed it. if you don't like the businesses in the area, go somewhere else, continue lamenting at home, or simply go f*ck yourself and let the rest of us enjoy the progress that has emerged at a seemingly exponential rate over the past few years.
by the way, napa 1015 is exceptional. places like dc coast, vidalia, and some of the snootier downtown establishments should take a few pointers from them on providing awesome food and an overall dining experience. the prices are not so unreasonable when you consider you're eating some of the best food in this town, regardless of zip code.
The Lincoln Memorial hole is poorly designed and nearly unplayable; Joe, if you're reading this, you should feel bad for bringing such dishonor to our neighborhood.
PS - I'd personally prob go more often with better beer and specials on said beer
Joe Englert said:
New expanded beer list is coming soon. More micros less Mexican.
More specials will come soon too.
Food prices upstairs will be lower in a few weeks.
The lincoln memorial is supposed to be almost unplayable. Grass has been added though. If you putt smoothly, you should put it on "driveway" within two or three strokes for an easy tap in.
I travelled alot and played lots of hard courses in the U.S. before doing this. There should be a couple of par killers on any good challenging course.
Back 9 holes will be longer but still very challenging.
Thanks for being interested!!
:)
Awright on the new microbrews, I appreciate a difficult hole (heh) but the plexiglass water and steep angle made it more frustrating than fun. Glad that grass has been added, I doff my cap to the greenskeeper.
Joe,
Back 9??--does this mean you still plan on adding more holes to the roof? Cause that would be NICE.
Also, appreciate the willingness to respond to the comments here (not only in writing but with the changes you've mentioned to the restaurant).
To me, you can't ask much more from a guy whos invested so much in our 'hood.
I thought the Lincoln Memorial hole is just fine. I hit good enough the first to miss it, than I hit again to smack the steps and got it next to the hole for a tap in. My partner got a hole in one after a few tries. The Mixing Bowl is a complete mind scrambler. Just like the real thing.
So I hear Reality TV is looking for some DC establishments for this run. How about it Joe? I think this place is just what they need!
Joe Englert said:
We have been asked by MTV to film in all our bars. After seeing what dirtbags television people are, we responded with a resounding "no".
As you might have suspected, there is no "Reality TV"....just scripted and contrived "conflict" written and shot by greedy, power hungry executives and their cronies. You are simply a pawn to their Machiavellian ways if you ever let them into your life.
to all the haters:
running a business is difficult and costs lots of money. you can't expect to have great quality establishments that stick around for the long run and pay rock bottom prices.
and secondly, h street is the only place in dc that has businesses that remind me of the coolest places in ny. we desperately need that here.
Joe, I can't wait to try to the Country Club...going to try to bring the kids over for family night.
Thanks again for investing in our neighborhood.
Trinidad Avenue resident (yes, you do get visitors from the Northside)
