Does no one else see the waste in sending a firetruck out to every call? In a city facing a budget deficit, you'd think we could save a couple dollars by just sending a police car or ambulance. I think they just like the sound of their own sirens, nevermind the detrimental effect to their neighborhood.

Are you kidding? *Everyone* sees the waste in it; but sending out fire trucks for initial EMS responses is too much of a cash cow for the Fire Department. I'm not joking about this.

Take a look at this article from Washingtonian magazine (multiple pages you have to click through; don't be distracted by the user comments on the first page, there's much more story). It goes into great detail on why EMS in the District is so incomparably dysfunctional, and why things happen like fire trucks responding to EMS calls.

Wanna talk about wasteful? Has anyone living on Florida (or in the area) heard the firemen riding down the street at 4 AM playing around on the speaker system and flashing their lights? I've woken up to this twice in the past couple of months...
