Shooting Last Night
Here's the alert:
Shooting 22:53 hours; Bladensburg Road NE/ Oates Street NE LOF; B/M; Occupying A Gray Truck With Unknown Tags DO NOT TAKE ACTION CALL 911 W/EVENT #I20090474118
According to my neighbor a man died. It happened at the car dealer where the word on the street was that there was a craps game going on several times a week. That's just what I heard but there would always be a lot more cars in the lot at night than during the day and a lot of people hanging out outside.
Ahhh yes, who needs Atlantic City or Vegas when you can enjoy the fun of gambling in your own neighborhood with the added thrill of settling disputes in the time honored American tradition of a gunfight?
Lack of dedicated, regular poilce patrols on foot in areas likely to foster illegal activity during the hours in which it is likely to transpire equals = rampant intercity crime. Score another victory for our well-managed constabulary - to say nothing of the countless residents that devote their lives to bettering themselves and their neighborhood
On another note. Two of my neighbors on the 1200 block of G Street, NE had property stolen out of their back yards this week. Both of them have tall wooden fences. One of those neighbors told me that he was on his front porch last night and watched several young men (2 on bikes) going up and down the street checking to see if cars were locked -- until they saw him and spilt. Lock it all up folks.
We had everything on our porch stolen last week (grill, patio furniture, lawnmower, weedeater, garden tools) and we too have a high wooden fence. Right on the corner, these guys were brazen. I agree with this advice on being more careful.
However, as we are in the 1200 block of I Street, I think there may be something going on in this area, and maybe a quick scan of backyards might prove fruitful? Or at least tipping the police that there is a small 'wave' of this type of crime in a somewhat localized area?
James join MPD-1 listserver that is a great forum to request more law enforcement in our area. That is a great forum. Even though the guys from the Diners is considered MPD-5 it borders very close to us.
We had a lawn mower stolen last summer. Does any one have an idea where they get sold? I'd put my money on the florida ave swap meet (or whatever its called) that takes place on sunday mornings
In the meantime, anyone who is already on it, if you could make mention of this recent rash of back-yard thefts on the listserv, that might help. Do cops read and/or respond to it?
I mean, do the police go to these auctions looking for stuff? They have a pretty specific description of my items on the police report and I'm fairly certain if they saw my stuff at the Florida Ave garbage-market or whatever, it would stick out.
yes, i am on both the 1 and 5 listserv, and police do respond on the list. The 1-D list has alot more activity, so I really recommend that the people in the 5th district join up. Alot of the people on the list are in bloomingdale and eckington, not trinidad, so they could use some more representation.
Dammit, I wish I'd thought of that last weekend. Although I'd have been pissed as hell, it would have been at least a little funny to see some dumb a-hole trying to sell my shit back to me.
Anyway, agreed on the FL Market. Sorry preservationists, but it's a cespool and I'd actually rather use that area draw souless yuppies from Arlington to our neighborhood than maintain the garbage at that market.
Excuse me for my ignorance - I'm new to the area.on what basis are people trying to preserve florida ave market? Is there a counter movement to its preservation?
I would walk around and look in backyards. I recovered a bike stolen from my backyard that way. Unfortunately, nobody is making a trip to rob you. Its your neighbors.
Save Florida Market. Tear down Eastern Market instead.
whoever said I am a fan of the flea market? Or that I think that such is highest and best use of that particular space? I don't. Elise likes the Flea Market way more than I...
If you want a sense of what I think about the market, this entry (drawn from a document I submitted to ANC6C) is the best explanation:
P.S. It sucks to lose your stuff because of brazen criminals.
So yes, watch out for youth bicyclists in the summer. Watch for people casing cars on the street. Watch for people going through alleys. Think twice about leaving stuff in your backyard. (Sadly, this is a necessary step.) And if people jump the fences of adjoining houses, call the police!
Florida Avenue Market is a big topic locally. It's got some buildings of some modest historic interest. More of interest, though, is the idea of having a working market in the neighborhood. However, it's recent history has been a wholesale market that doesn't really serve most of the community (with a few notable exceptions). And the thing about the crime is true. The flea market there is filled with stolen goods. And the abandoned grounds are home to a lot of crime at night.
There have been several proposals to develop the site. Some included some strong-arm eminent domain by the city. Hence the controversy.
The problem is that there are many different owners at the market, but no entity responsible for security, for cleanliness, for making sure that stolen goods aren't sold, etc. Or at least there isn't an entity that actually does that well.
This string of posts was eye opening. I never thought the Market was used as a place to fence stolen goods. Makes sense though. I will make sure I swing by the next time I have some random items stolen. Thanks for the information.
the idea of a decent market is awesome. the current situation is unacceptable. clean it up, get rid of the crap, and i'm sold.
dc is too small to harbor a craphole like that that generates... crap.
i work with folks that used to live in the area and were sooooo happy to leave trinidad/florida market area to move to maryland.
i tell them that the area is changing, and they laugh. "good luck," they say.
and these are people with relatives that still live in the area and are trying to get them out - but it sucks in this economy.
i'm not sure who wants to keep the area as a craphole, but it's definitely not the old timers.
they're tired of the crap.
can you count how many shootings have ocurred in the market over the last few years?
yeah, me neither. i stopped after four.
if the folks that want to keep a "market" active in that area, they should probably change their argument/justifications as to why they want the grit/dirt/crime.
that's the only way they'll succeed in keeping a craphole area in the nation's capitol that is only ten square miles big.
next thing you know, those people will be championing public housing projects that simply don't work....
speaking of which: did anyone watch the marion barry chronicles? thoughts?
i never understand the animosity against the capitol city markets. unless you stand to financially gain from its development, why do people want it knocked down? crime, prostitution, drugs bother you? call the cops. or just dont go there. people love that place, and food is cheap there. you live there? no, no you don't, so don't worry about it. you just want to kick out anything that resembles working class or the poor. the places is thriving.
if you want development for developments sake, focus on the abandoned and derelict housing. focus on empty lots.
go patronize the places that already exist. they need your business.
If it were as easy as just "calling the cops" and it being taken care of, don't you think that wouldve been done by now? I don't understand why you would NOT want this place cleared and redone! Don't you care anything about your property value??? Let's not make this about the people there being working class and/or poor. When you say things like that you're essentially saying that YOU equate. the poor and working class to being criminals. You can make a living honestly and be poor, You don't have to be hawking stolen shit at the swap meet
ya know, i dont know what the heck people keep saying the florida market is a haven for stolen goods. I go over there alot and if that stuff is stolen, people really need to steal better stuff, cause its pretty obvious that people just clean out there garage. Its mostly unusable stuff, imho.
4 murders and you think that's a big deal? I remember when 30 people were murdered between K and Florida, 5th and 7th in 18 months... or the single day when one person was murdered at 5th and K and one person was murdered at 5th and H, the roads were blocked off, but you could still drive on I Street. I think that was 1989, maybe 1990... you're weak poo poo.
James, I also live in the 1200 block of I..please write to me off list at roadbikedc@gmail.com with specifics. About a week ago, I took a Friday off and was out in my backyard when I saw a young man on a bicycle riding up and down the alley between I and Wylie kindof checking out yards. I opened my fence and watched him, but he wasn't doing anything I would consider calling MPD over. Now, I wonder if he was just a scout and then the others come back. I always act like Mrs. Kravitz when I see anyone I don't know in the back. I think everyone should be nosey and keep watch. Also, there has been a group of men in the 700 block of 7th St NE playing craps between parked cars.
The Florida Ave flea market is one of my favorite things about the neighborhood and the management is making huge efforts to improve the market and it's image.

You've been watching too many diamond heist movies. About six months ago, my wife was home during the day sitting at her laptop and noticed movement out in the backyard. She got up to look out, and there's some fucking wanked-out looking scumbag perusing the items on our back porch. Then starts jiggling the door handles.
By this time she's on the phone with MPD, and she's yelling and banging on the windows. And the guy very calmly and slowly bends down and unplugs our box fan, and walks off with it.
Good news was that the police came, found some other asshat with the fan who when busted ratted out the first guy. I think burglar got time served by the time the trail rolled around.
In any case, as a policeman told me, "A crackhead will break your car window to steal a pencil." They'll certainly steal a rusted-out old box fan from your backyard. And try to B&E while they're at it...
I always act like Mrs. Kravitz when I see anyone I don't know in the back. I think everyone should be nosey and keep watch.
Oh, and one last thing: when I see a bunch of guys I don't know gathered in my alley, I call 911 and say they're smoking pot. a) Because they probably are; and b) because fuck 'em.

Raise taxes. Bring in the yuppies. It's the only way.
Isn't that by where the Capitol City diner guys got mugged?

Would probably be a good idea to post these recent yard break-ins on the 1D list serv.

How does one access this list server?

florida flea market is a haven for stolen goods.
check it out, and buy back your stolen goods at an excellent price!
oh, wait...no...
we want to keep it just the way it is.
last time i was there, i was going to buy a drill, and asked why it was so cheap. "are you police?" was what the guy asked me...
yeah, i'm sorry, but the whole florida market is sooooooooo over!
unless you support drugs, prostitution, and crime in general.
"oh, but there's a shitty cheap korean restaurant there!"
bite me, and shut that craphole down.
are they going to shut down the Florida Market? I wont be sad to see it go.

Save some of the buildings, tear down the rest, and displace the crime to some other crumby part of the city.
Sorry Layman but preserving crap is still preserving crap.

plus a weak user of data. Just as many if not more people are murdered in your greater neighborhood. It hardly justifies urban renewal.
