Work Begins on German Beer Haus

Aaron McGovern of the Dupont Circle restaurant Russia House recently began work on his latest project. He intends to bring a large German restaurant and beer garden to 1355 H Street. Expect about 12 beers on tap, and a full menu of German staples.

Isn't 1335 the address for H St. CC?

anything happening on h that will bring people during the day? office projects? .gov's moving to the hood? anything? i fear a tipping point of hey its great to have some bars to holy crap, all we have are bars and its getting to be a problem. i dont mean to be a naysayer. i love every single last one of those bars. i've been to almost every one.
but you know what i mean? we need other things too.
maybe i'm just sounding greedy? ; )

does main street still exist? or other h specific orgs helping out the business? (like, wouldnt it be great if horace and dickies had some outdoor seating?) if the clothing shops opened late one day a week?

A few months ago I had a rare weekday afternoon off and stopped to grab a sandwich at 2pm at Taylor's, and it was PACKED. Something is bringing people to H street all day long. I know Sticky Rice is also open for lunch now.

Reflexive,

I was thinking the same thing but I doubt we will see any office buildings without a metro station. However, I do see opportunities for other retailers such as a book store, furniture store, grocery store (yes another one), law and accounting offices, or any small business that needs a store front. There is a plan to turn H Street Connection into condos with retail on the ground floor. I also believe the Employment office on 6th and H will be turned into condos as well. Again, I doubt we will see much activity in terms of office buildings on the east side but I think the master plan is to get some residential projects on the east side to support the businesses on the west side.

cool about taylor being packed. the times i've been to sticky for lunch it was pretty empty.

and i didnt mean to ignore the OP, its great to have more beer!

the streetcars could make office more attractive. a metro stop on h isnt on the table at all, is it?

btw whats happening at the old sears lot?

reflexive said...

having said that, Sears moving back to the hood would be cool, huh?

sears moving back to dc in general would be great imho.

What about trying to attract Costco to move into the Hechinger Mall? The former National Wholesalers spot is open. Seems like the right footprint and has parking (don't hate on me for saying parking"

Or Target?

i also went by taylor last wednesday around 1 p.m and i couldn't even get in the door because it was so packed. despite the long wait, it was reassuring to know that some of the new H St. businesses appear to have real staying power and are attracting a lot of outsiders to the neighborhood who wouldn't otherwise set foot over here.

i think costco and parking go hand in hand.

i go to the one in pentagon city now, i sure as hell would rather go the hechinger mall.
and speaking of parking, more available parking really wouldn't hurt h street.

underground would be preferable

transit options loose appeal when people have to transfer, especially at night or with lots of groceries or whatever.

Sidamo's is packed on Saturdays, too. Don't know about the rest of the week. And when I pass Bikram Yoga in the evening, it seems pretty lively.

OTOH, the little takeout store next to H St CC is closing...

PS Hope the new German place isn't as overpriced as Cafe Berlin.

Any time frame on this German Beer Garden?

Did Pap & Petey's close again? The last couple times I went by the lights were out, and it wasn't that late at night.

Is is a Bier Garten or Beir Haus? There is a big difference. I would love a true Bier Garten, not one where the beer glasses are in plastic cup and the door men are like the mafia because people are drinking outside. sorry, I was suddenly thinking of a different city.
I agree that cafe Berlin is over priced and the food is so-so, plus it is typical central euro-food. The owner is not from Berlin but from some small city in Bavaria. They really do not serve traditional Berliner Essen(food).

I noticed an ABC application posting on the window of a corner building at 4th & Hst. Does anyone know anything about it?

isn't 4th & H where the 7-11 was supposed to go? Maybe they're going to sell beer. I'm sure the ANC will get on them to ensure that they don't sell singles.

DCJaded said...

I cant think of any 7-11s in the city that sell alcohol. So I dont think that should be a concern.

dcjaded; 7-11 on South Cap and M SE sells beer and alcopops..

So, is this a correct list of what's supposedly coming to the east end of H?

- pizza place (where the Ohio was?)
- red sauce place (one of Joe Englert's?)
- bbq/beef (the "Coal House" place)
- Baltimore pie place
- ramen/dumpling bar
- German beer haus place

Am I forgetting anything? Are all of these still alive?

Anonymous said...

Chris Metzler - there is also the Irish place, Shamrock and something, going in between R&R Hotel and Argo. Exciting stuff!

Anonymous said...

I thought H street Country Club was at 1335 H Street.

Anonymous said...

Totally! I can't wait for the pie place to get here. I saw their website earlier and I'm already tempted to drive up to baltimore to try it out

The Ohio is not going to be a pizza place. It will be a Tonic maybe, if they get their money situation hammered out. Otherwise, it's going to be vacant for a while. But no Radius, as was originally planned.

There will be a pizza place, where the Sun and Moon grocery was (corner of 14th/Hst). "Tonic" or whatever at the Ohio is on hold. There is also "Drew's" on the 1200 block next to the Autozone parking lot. So, by my count, that is EIGHT new places looking to open in the next year or so (not including the Tonic). There's also a Rita's going in on the 1100 block but that appears stalled too.

Conner Contemporary Art is open during the day ... one block off H on Florida.

Chris,
Drew (restaurant), Gallery O/H, and Uneeda Market are also coming.

Is there any update on the "Star and Shamrock"? That building hasn't had any work done on it for a while now...

I have no doubt that the owners of each on these project will have a post on Frozen Tropics when they are close to completion. Unless there is a major change in the economy, I would not expect any of these projects to be completed this year. There is no real incentive to open before Spring of 2010.

If we want these projects to move faster, we need to fill the establishments that are currently open.

Space at 401 H st will be an Ethiopian Restaurant ran by a very smart and saavy Ethiopian woman. Let's support her as soon as she opens!

Derek said...

Thanks Joe. I will support her how ever I can.

Anonymous said...

How about supporting her by visiting once a week and bringing friends. Are you serious?

Anonymous said...

Too funny. The nameless place has not opened and support has been lowered to "However I can."

Derek said...

@anon 7:30 - I misunderstood Joe when he gave the information about the restaurant at 4th and H St. I actually was referring to the other corner. And as far as your too lame laugh at my 'how ever I can', at least I post my name. You seem to be just another louse on a typical blog.

What was your misunderstanding?

Jordan said...

To add to the list of places opening on H Street, there is a southern italian dine-in restaurant planned just to the left of the proposed bbq joint, Coal and Ice House.

inked said...

That would be the red sauce place.

Does anyone know what type of business is opening on the corner of H and 6th St?

The owner of the new German place supposedly should have it open by this November or December. They have a crew working on it every day.

What type of restaurant is opening on 6th NE and H St.?

Derek said...

I post a comment in an earlier post about that spot at 6th & H.

I live across the street and me the owner one day. He told me he wants to open a Sports Bar that will serve lunch and dinners. He has not bothered to pull any permits at all. The Electrical permit posted is a(I believe) trade permit. There is no application for a liquor license and nothing has been announced with the ANC. There has been a good amount of work done in the place and no accountability from DCRA. With a change in use(from a business/office to a restaurant) you need to bring the space up to code. The owner has told me that the restrooms are upstairs. I don't think they will be ADA compliant. Then again, he could open it as an office and problem solved.
