Homicide @16th and K

From the 5D listserv:

Today at approximately 5:30pm members of the Fifth District responded to 16th and K street ne for the report of a shooting.  Once on the scene an adult male subject was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.  It was reported that a black male suspect approached the victim as he stood in the block, the suspect produced a hadngun and shot the victim several times.  The victim later died as a result of the shooting.  If anyone has any information relative to this homicide please call 202 727 9099 immediately.

Mapquest was puzzled by the query, and tried to steer me to NW, but this map should give the approx location (right at Bladensburg Road and K). This is just over the boundary in Carver Terrace.

thank you for posting this information here! I know people have Frozen Tropics in their Google Reader that live on the hill. I think reporting these things so they don't go completely unnoticed is important in many respects.

No suprise when looking at the location of the incident.

I'm continually baffled by the apparent ambivilence of certain segments of urban populations to violence and crime in their neighborhoods. It's sickening and disturbing and feels reminiscent of the attitudes of populations in some of the more "interesting" parts of the world.

I've argued (and continue to argue) that part of the solution to the problems we face is a rethinking of the application and management of our police forces - but the crux of the problem is derived from the fact that blatant, violent, senseless crime will continue until the population makes a conscious decision to stand for it no longer.

There are countless reasons why people become numb to violence and crime, and become hopelessly encumbered with a sense of helplessness - but they are really all mere excuses to exculcate ourselves from personal responsibility for a problem that eminates from a depraved acceptance such acts.

I feel it's unacceptable for us to consider ourselves any better as a people when we allow concepts like "bad neighborhoods" to exist and anytime we accept a lack of order and respect for people and property as par for the course we ourselves contribute to it's continuance.

So what is your solution? More police officers in the area? That won't work if those people don't even want to help themselves.

We need to get to the root of the problem and help the kids grow up with role models at home and a decent education. Otherwise it's just a continuous cycle of criminals being bred in the neighborhood

Well, let's see. Providing people with free government housing and free food and free everything but not requiring them to actually do any work, freeing them up to do nothing all day but hang out and get into trouble didn't seem to work too well.

Maybe after forty years of our failed welfare policies we can revisit the idea?

It's a shame, because the many hard-working low income people in this area suffer from the actions of the riff-raff. The riff-raff which are more often than not a direct product of our misguided inter-generational welfare programs.

There are, of course, cultural issues as well. We still pay millions to pop stars and athletes that glorify the thug life.

We need to start shunning and publicly embarrassing those that profit from the glorification of thuggery, instead of buying their products, watching their games, etc.

Note: I know nothing about this particular shooting. I was responding the issue of crime in this area in general.

That is so F'd up. Like four blocks from my house. That's right along the route we take to Safeway. Eventually, I/we are gonna be driving or walking along and randomly stumble on one of these robberies or killings. That's why I still drive to H St. at night.
