Where is all of that police presence on H? As the post after this one indicates, (catching the crooks in action in the 1200 block of Florida)it is possible to catch criminals, or even prevent crime, if you are around.

I wondered why the police helicopter was circling low around the 11th Street NE area last night when I got home from work around 9. Now I know.

"Don't take action" - that is why DC has so much GD crime!

If anyone sees these morons walking down the street with a tv or a computer, run them over with your car and keep driving! It is about time the black men in this community stop breaking laws and making all of the law abiding citizens in the area fear for the safety and property.

Haven't you heard??? There's a new police beat on H Street-- it's the barstool beat. They're all hanging out inside the bars with their buddies rather than all by themselves on the streets doing their jobs. There should really be an investigation into H Street policing practices.

It does seem like there have been too many of these incidents lately. I hope everyone who feels similarly will do their part by calling 911 when you see illegal or suspicious activity. While we need more police presence in the area, we as citizens can do our part by reporting it when we see drinking, drugs, and other troublesome behavior.

don't be such haters! these men have been mistreated for generations, and put down for so much of their lives... and add this economy on top of all that, what are they supposed to do?!

jeez!

I think I saw these two last night about 7:45pm. A suspicious pair of young men slowly drove up behind me at the corner of 5th and G NE and sat in the middle of the street watching me. They stopped and stared at me until another car came along - then they drove away quickly.

They were driving a gold station wagon with large trash bags in the back. Both were wearing ski caps.

This may or may not be relevant - but if you're walking around, keep an eye out for that station wagon.

Please convey this to the 1st district police (main line: 698-0555). Your info may or may not be relevant to their investigation, but it certainly can't hurt.

Just a quick reminder to everyone to try not to be a complete and total douchebag.

Thanks!

That's what she said...

I'm with anon 9:10 on this one! I fully support needless generalizations. As a black man in this community, I'll do my best to "stop breaking laws and making all of the law abiding citizens in the area fear for the [sic] safety and property." For anon 9:10's sake I'm going to try really hard to resist that natural urge, but it's going to be tough since I SHO do love me some law breaking! If you see me or any other black man walking towards you on the street, watch out! We may be fixin' to get our law breaking on!

i don't know about you folks but nothing was scarier to me (as a person of color) than an army of white folks with bad teeth, nascar t-shirts, and a fourth-grade grasp of english invading dc like during the tea-bagging convention.

get over it, you moved to an "up-and-coming" neighborhood, and it obviously isn't there yet.

Crime will continue to happen in NE DC until people start realizing their really is no future in breaking the law. Eventually every criminal gets caught (even Madoff got caught). Some even go to jail...

I have a feeling the young man on the other post (15 yr old) will spend about 5 hours at the police hq and then be let go to his grandparents (sorry for being the posts together but they are related).

Ok, ok settle down, both sides.

This isn't a problem whose root is in RACE. No one is honestly suggesting that these men's race leads them intrinsically to crime.

But let's not also not pretend its not true that roughly 100% of the crime in OUR neighborhood is committed by young black males.

If we acknowlege this and realize that maybe THIS situation needs a different response than, say, rural Alabama's problems, maybe we can actually work towards a realistic solution.

UPDATE!

did anyone hear about the white guys that assaulted a black woman on 6th and K Street????

oh yeah, cuz it didn't happen.

sorry, my bad.... yo.

el jefe said...

I'm curious how these guys were getting in to homes. Me and everybody on my block has bars and gates on all our first floor doors and windows. Do these guys seek out houses that aren't as secure or maybe bust in a 2nd story window?

Anybody know what happened - either specifically in this case or more generally so folks will know what we should be looking for?

Anyone have any more info on the actual robery? Was it at gun point? Did anyone get hurt? 845pm on H and 11th is bold. The crime will increase during gentrification, that is expected. Its level can be somewhat controlled but the cops are doing a poor job. They are there but congregate too much in packs and chat.

Anonymous said...

Lots of cops on H tonight. There was even a supervisor car. The problem is that they always group together, and only talk to each other, a cluster of cops on bikes, a group of cars, a bunch on scooters. What the hell are they afraid of?

Anonymous said...

anon @ 9:58,

i don't think they may be scared as much as engaged in human beings' natural tendency to congregate socially with their respective tribe/family

the solution to that is to have supervisors crack down on excessive "hanging out" outside of structured break time and if folks are caught congregating any other time for more than a few minutes, a nice dock in pay should discourage what is essentially loafing on the public dollar. i'm sure their unions have negotiated the appropriate amount of break time. any other excessive hanging around and chewing the fat on our dime should be roundly discouraged.

Bullshit! This is happening so often I don't even care anymore! It just feels like any other day when there is a robbery or a shooting! Cops do nothing to help us. How about the drugs being sold right in my face? he sign on my street says"persons selling or buying drugs will be prosecuted and or have their vehicle seized." Yeah right!

A lot of these crimes on the street can be prevented if we all learn Karate.

I wonder if it just seems like we have an abnormal amount of crime in OUR neighborhood because we have such an extensive neighborhood blog. Other neighborhoods/cities may be just as bad, but a lot of the crime goes unnoticed because there is not such a forum for publicizing it.

If this is the case Inked, maybe you could put some kind of post to this effect so as not to discourage potential H Street incomers?

if the real estate prices keep going up, maybe we can get rid of the drug dealers, rapists, murderers, thugs, vandals, burglars, panhandlers, etc.

yall pretentious yuppies make me laugh.........."there was a robbery!" "theres gunshots!" "theres people selling and abusing drugs!"..........You moved to the ghetto, WTF else do you expect? If anything, now you know what longtime, law abiding residents have been dealing with for years upon years long before you pretentious, oftentime racist SOB's started trying to gentrify and sterilize every ghetto in DC just cuz city living is "hip"....i along with longtime residents would probably feel bad for yall if you werent so damn pretentious and racist.......if your gonna live in a ghetto area and survive, you can start by taking your noses out of the air.....,.and it would help if you used something like I dunno........COMMON SENSE! Lock your car doors and your house doors, close your blinds so that local hoodlums wont case your house.......

Don't fret. Its all good.

You can always go out to an overrated restaurant on H St. NE to make yourselves feel better about living in a bad neighborhood.

Oh, and maybe you'll get streetcar service some day. Maybe. Don't let the gaping chasm of the District's budget deficit scare you into thinking that it won't happen for many years to come.

In 20 years, you'll be living in a great neighborhood! HHAHAAHAHA! Suckers.

Hey Anon Oct 31, 2009 10:03:00 PM,

This is your landlord in NE. Your rent of $1200.00 is three months past due. I have seen you out in such places as Sticky Rice, Argo, Sidamo and Souk, so I know you have money. Pay up douchebag.

Anonymous said...

No fool. I don't waste my time in overrated restaurants or neighborhoods.

It looks and sounds like you devote a lot of time to not caring about H street NE.

I bet you are one of those guys who could have bought here years ago but didn't and now it burns you up that you are priced out. Everytime you read this blog it makes you sick that you are shut out.

But keep typing away on your computer by yourself because that is a great way to get even.

"It looks and sounds like you devote a lot of time to not caring about H street NE. "

That is all incorrect. Nice strawman argument though.... you should write a textbook on ad hominim arguments.

Here are the facts: I followed the recent crime reports to this blog. I commented on the divergence between crime and trendy (over-rated) restaurants in your neighborhood. That is all. I've been H NE a couple of times. There are better places to spend time and money.

The average list price for a home in "your" neighborhood is $410,000. The median sale price is around $370,000. That is all in the lower percentiles as far as 'hoods inside the beltway go. If 400k is enough to impress you, that is fine. I've got more than half that, liquid, in my savings account. I have another quarter million in my brokerage accounts.

But go on trying to impress me with your home in the 'hood. It's fun.

inked said...

Really, you keep more than $200k in SAVINGS account? If you really have an interest in the crime report, you might try subscribing. They can send them to your cell. That report is much more comprehensive than anything you'll find here.

ne proletaian-

i think we are all aware we live in a neighberhood with some issues, but still chose to live here and deal with it. Some of us did this because it was the only place we could afford in DC, where we want to live. H Street, NE is an awesome neighberhood and ANYONE thats cares about the place they live will get pissed off about robberies, drug dealing, break in's, targeted shootings and general stupidity. In terms of racism, get real...mor of the people I know moved to DC to get away from the polarized neighberhoods.

I dont understand why someone with SO much money (and clearly a lot of time on his/her hands) would want to go through the trouble of following a blog on our little ole neighborhood. I think you need a hobby if this what you've got to spend your time doing - following and commenting on the blog of a neighborhood where you dont even live.

Anonymous said...

How much money someone has and how much money someone SAYS they have are two completely different things.

Wake up already said...

Again, unbelievable... well, not so much unbelievable as unfathomable.

It's the old "pretentious yuppies" versus "bitter natives" argument.

Let's get beyond the sound-byte arguments here. Firstly, there is a problem - a problem that is pervasive and enigmatic, but that doesn't mean it's not one that can be resolved. Anyone that let's the discussion devolve into one about "race" is ignoring the real issues - from both ends, whether it be the "yuppie" that says "it's not because they're black, but I'm just saying..." or the native that lashes out about the racist tendencies of the demographic anomalies.

There is a serious problem with young, professional urbanites that think that hip restaurants, feel-good community events and blogging will solve the rampant crime that infects our city. It's also a huge problem when one tries to talk around a sentiment that screams "if there was just more of *us* here and less of *them*..." and feel shocked when you're accused of racism. There is a long history of racial discrimination and intolerance in this city and there is a tangible resentment against a demographic that basically fled the city for safe, secure, suburbs for thirty years only to come back feeling that they can solve the problems without addressing that very real abandonment.

At the same time, one cannot simply absolve oneself of racism by rallying around a skin color as an identification of self and feel justified because there was a failure on the part of society having done so in the past. What do I mean? Racism is racism, no matter what color you are. Identifying yourself primarily by the color of your skin doesn't help anyone and confuses the real problems - especially when it allows for someone to draw up some statistics regarding the "ethnicity" of criminals.

The majority of crime in this city has nothing to do with "race" - especially when the MAJORITY of said crime by a certain "race" is perpetrated upon others of the same "race". We only seem to get indignant when it happens to someone else.

The only way to really effectively combat the crime in this city is if the citizens of it stop acting like victims - of society or of the criminals - and begin to refuse to accept criminal activity.

Look out for your neighbors - pay attention to who's out of place, and react in a non-passive manner. I'm not suggesting vigilante justice - I'm suggesting people should stop turning a blind eye to criminal activity and start fighting it. Criminals mug people and break into houses and steal cars where it's likely no one will give a shit or do anything about it... and I'd say that pretty much fits the bill here - both for the "yuppies" and the "natives".

Anonymous said...

"...there is a tangible resentment against a demographic that basically fled the city for safe, secure, suburbs for thirty years only to come back feeling that they can solve the problems without addressing that very real abandonment."

Ironic that much of the violence is driven by and against those under 30ish years of age (a demographic variable) and that a large majority of the "new" residents are also of the same demographic variable (IE, under 30ish years of age). This is a middle class, education, etc. issue -- as some fled to "the county" (be it PG or Montgomery). Yes, race is also "a" factor -- but not the only one.

I know of many persons of many races that have "come back" (actually, came as they never "left") and are trying to make our neighborhood a better place.

Legacy only goes so far as an excuse.

Lighten up folks! I'm a young professional black male who owns my home in the neighborhood, as do all of my young black male friends and I love the diversity of the neighborhood...black, white, old, young, with a touch of the hood! Things happen everywhere folks! Even in the burbs! Learn how to speak to these youngsters when you walk by instead of looking down on them, and you may just be surprised that you have more in common than not! Must I have to wear my business clothes each time I leave my home for you not to think i'm "one of the scary one's"?

Anonymous said...

Lighten up? Learn how to speak to "these youngsters"? Yes - I would be very suprised to learn what I have in common with young people that wrap themselves in an artificial culture that glamorizes crime, self-centered indulgence and general indifference.

No, you don't have to wear your suit every time you leave your house - but if your preferred apparel outside business attire makes you look like an extra for some thug-life hip-hop video you'd be hard pressed to get the same amount of respect - no matter how educated and professional you are.
