Do you know what time?
Our block on 10th between K St. and I St., NE is constantly terrorized by guys on bikes and the collection of vans and old luxury cars that seem to act in consort with them. They hang out on the corner of K and then in front of one of the houses on our block. Several of us have reported the owners of the home that provides them shelter, and I think most of have spoken to the MPD more times then we can count. To there credit, the MPD seems to do everything in their power, which seems to be very little other than giving the kids a hard time once and a while. I'm so sorry if a son, husband, father was killed by one of these guys.
How do you sign up for the text alerts?
Not surprising at all. That corner of 10th and K is a known drug spot, and has been for ages. Cops won't do anything because they know anyone they arrest will be back at that corner the next day.

A shooting just happened at about 3:30pm in the thousand block of 6th NE (between K and I).
That should be between K and L.
Hi - this seems like a great online community. I have a quick question for all of you. My husband and I are looking at leaving our rental home near Lincoln Park and buying on Florida Ave. We've been on this blog and several community sites and feel like we have a sense of the neighborhood and all that it entails. But, since we've been so close to the park for many years, we were wondering if there was a safe park or park-like place to take your and kids to play? We're not expecting Lincoln, but were just wondering about green space. Thanks!
Heard from bystander that three people were shot at the corner of 6th and L Streets NE. Certainly there were lots of shell casings on the corner. The 1000 block is a known drug dealing site and, to their credit, 1D has been posting cops on the block pretty regularly. I wonder if the two shootings are connected.
@hillnomore--People who live around Gallaudet can get community member passes to use some of their facilities and to walk around campus. I just recently started using this. Other than that, though, I don't know of a park above H.
@hillnomore? We live on Trinidad Ave. and it's a mile walk to Lincoln Park from our house. We still go there a lot. Occasionally my husband will take the kids to the playgrounds at Joe Cole or Trinidad Rec. It's just that more of their buddies from Maury Elementary hang out on the Hill.
It is a good community here, and we've been glad we joined it. There are ups and downs, but it sure is nice to walk to the H Street restaurants when we do go out.
@hillnomore -- The city just opened a great new park right next to JO Wilson Elementary School (corner of 7th and K St NE). The park is geared towards children and is kept clean by members of the community.
To get into the park, go the front of the school (faces K Street) and walk halfway down the block towards 6th. You can't miss it.

We were walking north on 10th from H to I when we heard the first three pops and we looked up wondering if it was m 80s or the real deal, then we saw a young man with a gun pointed to the ground pop off three more shots in to the ground.
We did a 180 around the corner and called 911. I was not off the phone when the first cop came in.
What we realized we saw was not shooting in to the ground but in to a person. When we did walk back through the vic was sitting upright talking to the cops.
hillnomore,
one block north of the 1200 block of Florida is a green space and playground (Joe Cole Rec.). Lot of kids play there, and lots of people walk their dogs around there as well.
There is a very nice park at 6th and L.I think that it is a part of Joe O Wilson.
I don't know if I'm encouraged or saddened to read these comments alternating between random neighborhood shootings and good parks for the kids to play in.
Again, I'm inclined to feel that a substantial increase in police presence is the real solution here (aside from citizens refusing to accept these levels of criminality in their neighborhoods). I'm not talking cops driving around in patrol cars during the day - I'm talking the good ol' fashioned beat cop, walking regular patrol routes in areas known to harbor criminal activity, especially during hours when the activity is most likely to occur.
As stated, it is likely that MPD to resist arresting individuals due to the perception that they'll be right back on the streets again later - but this is a failure in the proper application of a police force, which primarily should be a DETERRENT to crime, and not a RESPONDER. Criminals exist, and true enough, they may just be motivated to move to somewhere else - but all the better.
Would be nice to see some more info about the shooting on 6th yesterday. The cops had a kid in handcuffs on Florida Ave. soon after and he apparently had a gun, but not sure if he was involved in the shooting. There has definitely been an uptick in muggings, shootings, and burglaries in the last couple weeks after a quiet summer.
Maybe they're taking cues from the Taliban... getting their "jihad" on before the winter sets in and ends the "fighting season". Heh.
