H Street Great Street: Tao

H Street Great Street has a name for the new Asian restaurant coming to 1110 H Street. It's called Tao. The owner, who I believe is the same guy who previously wanted to open a sandwich shop called Subterranean in the same space, also has a place on U Stree t.

I'm late on the following news and it is way off topic, but semi-local (capitol hill) and AWESOME and from a recent DC govt press release:

DPR Youth Football Team Brings Home First National Championship

Fenty administration to welcome home the Watkins Hornets

Media Contact: John A. Stokes, (202) 673-2195
Pop Warner Football: Kevin Clark, (202) 498-2243

(Washington, DC) Today the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) youth football team from Watkins Recreation Center, the Hornets, became the first team in DPR history to win the coveted Pop Warner Division I Pee Wee National Football Championships. The Hornets defeated the Florida City Razorbacks from Miami, Florida with a final score of 22-8 at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty said, "The District of Columbia is extremely proud of the Watkins Hornets! Today's historic win, which is a first under DPR's charter, is an inspiration to youth around the nation." He continued, "The Hornets players, coaches and parents are to be commended for their hard work and dedication throughout the season. This win is truly a testament to the fact that discipline in athletics and education leads to victory."

The Hornets are the first DPR team to win the Pop Warner National Championship. The Hornets defeated last year's reigning champions, the White Oak Warriors, to become the Eastern Region Champions and advance to the Pop Warner Super Bowl. During the week-long Super Bowl, the Hornets defeated the Southfield Falcons from Michigan and the Arlington Thunder from Texas. The amazing Hornets complete the season undefeated with a 15-0 record.

Also off-topic (sorry), but does anyone know if the Red And The Black is still in business? Their website seems to be gone. Thanks in advance.

Do we know if this is going to be more of a restaurant or more of a bar? The "menu" at Jin (the other property on 14th Street) seems to be focused on drinks, including VIP bottle service. I'm a little concerned that the owner isn't reading his audience very well. I just can't see VIP bottle service working on H Street... We'll see. Whatever they do, it will be much better than a vacant property! Looking forward to it.

Carlos,

Re: The Red & Black--DC9's website just went through a significant upgrade so, as they share common ownership, it may just be that this is the next website due for reconstruction/rebranding. I think if it had closed, there'd be more news on it. Fear not.

Jin actually has a pretty nice food menu under the "Lounge" tab.

But what's up with calling a place a "lounge" instead of a restaurant? Restaurants can have a bar area, and they can serve drinks. "Lounge" seems pretentious and likely to put off some people.

Thank you very much anonymous, I absolutely adore both DC9 and The Red And The Black, and would be very sorry to see either close.

Red & the Black is definitely still open. They were closed the other night, but it was for a staff Christmas party.

Thanks inked.

"Whatever they do, it will be much better than a vacant property! Looking forward to it." Asolutely the worst attitude you can have.

Anon 1:38- You're Right! Much better to leave as a vacant property! Run down buildings are the best!

Look peeps,

Unless the business has the likely potential to draw dangerous patrons into our area, ANY business is better than a vacant building. Period.

Now, if you don't like it, don't go. The simplest way to protest, aside from the BS concerns raised at meetings of the unfortunately powerful ANCs, is not to give them your business. If you are right and it truly sucks, it'll go out of business and something you like can hopefully take its place.

It's ridiculous that people try to rail against new businesses coming in just because they may not be the type they want (i.e., the ever popular "lounge" debate we've seen crop up here).

Unless you've got some realistic cause for concern (see the old "Studio 400" threat), vote with your wallet.

I look forward to the "lounge". One of the coolest things about H street is that it is not homogenous, there is a lounge crowd on H street. You just aren't it. Jin is a cool spot, I remember when it was Mangos back in the 2000. The owner is also a good guy and will be an asset to the business community and the community in general.

So rather than a vacant property, you would prefer a specialty to store which sold wigs, liquor, nail extensions, and fast food, in addition to providing check cashing services? Right.. I thought so.

I agree with the pervious post. There is a Lounge crowd on H street, that looks for other alternatives other than martini lounge and the other club across the street from Nabys. If you dont like it....dont patronize....just my fifty cents.

Anon 6:44--

That's exactly my point. What I'd "prefer" shouldn't matter. While my personal preference, indeed, is that all these wig stores go out of business as the demand for more high end retail increases, I certainly don't think it's my place to try to keep such businesses from opening, or to claim that prefering them to vacant properties is the "worst attitude you can have".

I don't use the wig stores and that's about the extent of what public input should be on new businesses.

If it's gonna be a cocktail lounge I just hope they get a license for that, and not for a restuarant which is what the article said it will be.
