I can't wait until we start seeing streetcars getting highjacked.
MPD gets an F in my book.
How do they get an F? Short of having a MPD officer drive every vehicle for the occupants, chances are there will be gaps in coverage. Carjackings were more south and later in the day before - that is where they concentrated their focus. Can't fault them for that, or not being able to prevent a carjacking much earlier in the day and further north.
"Carjackings were more south and later in the day before"
I'm no expert on military time, but I think 2337 hours means 11:37pm. Sounds like this was in the middle of the night.
how do you get on this police notice list? i think i did the one on the pd webiste. picked a bunch of neighborhoods but never get anything near H ST. I know, there is no crime up here, but there isnt that little crime for me to never be notified
I would like to know how these carjackings happen. I mean what's the modus operandi? Do they just drag someone out of their car or do they take your car when you are about to get in?
MPD can do very little to prevent carjacking except apprehending the perpetrators, shutting down the Anacostia chop shops (which would require a competent intelligence apparatus) and educating the public. Bait vehicles are another possibility but require an immense amount of manpower and equally as much patience.
Anacostia chop shops?? The majority of carjackers use the cars for joyrides (Unauthorized Use) and then they are abandoned. Other stolen cars end up being shipped to other places outside the country. The real question is why has this particular area become so prone to armed carjacking
I agree with Curious Cat. Can someone tell us the details of these carjackings? Are the victims people that aren't looking over their shoulder? Are they riding with the doors unlocked? Don't people know by now if you live in this area and there are two or three young black men standing around your car, turn around or lock the door. Profiling may not be PC, but screw that, sometimes it can save your life.
Anon 2:18... it's only a matter of time before you're called a racist for making a simple observation. Just saying. We're supposed to pretend that the perps lack race.
It's idiotic to not be on "B/M" watch in this area. Simlply put, 99.999999% of the violent crime in this area is perpetrated by young, black, males.
Staying alert to potentially dangerous situations is not racist--it's the only "weapon" we have in this fight.
SO if anyone wants to call "racism", screw 'em. If that's what it takes to keep the people I care about safe, then so be it.
Curious Cat: Don't pick up hitchhikers, especially those with guns.
One of the victim is my neighbor, he is 6'3 medium built afroamerican guy. He works event security on the side. He was approaching his car, and three guys pop up and he ran, but they chased him and showed a gun. He chose to give up his car keys. He is the father of two little kids and a teenager. They drove the vehicle less than a block because he has an anti-theft device on it, the guys jump out of his car,and highjack a woman's car when she stopped for stop sign. These guys have guns, and no car is worth your life.
Anon 3:35: Thanks for explanation. So it's safe to assume that carjackings are occur when one is trying to get into the car and not while one is already in the car. That's a tough one. Not much one can do other than be vigilant of the surroundings.
This is exactly why I never stop at stop signs.
Even being vigilant of your surroundings isn't necessarily going to help you. If you stay in the car with the doors locked, someone can just show you a gun and say "get out." If you feel creeped out by a situation and decide not to walk up to your car and open the door, that won't stop someone from walking up to you, showing a gun, and saying "gimme your keys; which car is yours?" And before you respond with "that's unlikely," something close to the latter happened in the recent spate of carjackings. So unless you're just never going to go outside on your block, it's hard to prevent.
I agree with all the "racist" comments here wholeheartedly. Just seems like good common sense to me. Same reason why I don't trust my money to white people. Afterall, 99.999999% of the white collar crime is committed by white people. And God forbid you ever do business with a Jewish person. Hellooooo, you're just asking to get screwed over!
We all have to know the limitations associated with each race. Otherwise, you'll wind up a victim and you'll have only yourself to blame because you were too stupid to apply the appropriate generalization. Wake up and smell the arugula, baby!
my neighbor who was carjacked last week was fully out of her car and across the street in front of her house, when 2 guys sprayed her with mace and grabbed her purse and keys. they were waiting in a double parked car with blinkers on just down the block. i guess they were pretending like they were waiting to pick up a friend, so she didn't pay much attention.
just the other day there was another one by a kid with what was described as an uzi. then his friends drove up in a car and they drove off in the 2 cars.
another woman was punched in the face and then had her keys taken.
it's gotten completely ridiculous.
In my day, if we wanted to take a car for a joyride, we had to learn how to hotwire it.
Well said, Dolemite, "...you'll wind up a victim and you'll have only yourself to blame because you were too stupid to apply the appropriate generalization." This is probably one of the best definitions of (and justifications for) profiling I've ever heard.
In this neighborhood, look over your shoulder and lock your doors if you see two or more young black males loitering. I dare someone to dispute that because everyone of you know it's true. Now are you going to spend more time trying to refute the truth or spend your energy trying to defeat the cause?
Or if you see an olive skin cat with dark features getting on the same plane as you, get off that mofo ASAP and report him to the authorities! Are you really worried about being PC in a time like that? Who cares if your little trip is delayed. You won't be reaching your destination anyhow once that son of a bitch decides to blow up his long johns! My only problem with this discussion about generilizations is that we're not taking things far enough. If you really take the time to think about it, you'll probably be too scared to walk out the front door. Which is fine with me since I have money in the bank and netflix.
huge water problem at 10th & Florida.
Big suprise. Car jackings and the non-violent stolen car events are increasing fast in Trinindad. I posted on the "1200 Block Meigs shooting" that i witnessed three black males fleeing in a stolen car. The cop was pursuing but had to slow down for a speed hump. The perp drove through two stop signs at 90 miles an hour.
I followed up with 5th district and they said they found the car one block from oates ne. The blogger or the other thread tried to say it was Maryland residents coming into Trinidad to steal cars. That is BS. There is so much crime in DC/Trinidad the police should give up. Give up until we elect people who pass laws that put these perps behind bars for a decent amount of time.
MD
On my block in the past week, someone knocked out my truck window, broke into a neighbors car and tried to boost it, but broke the ignition instead. This happened on two separate nights and I live 4 blocks from union station.
MD,
I don't remember saying that.
On the MPD-1D listserve, the MPD seems to think that the recent carjackings south of H and thereabouts are due to the location near Blandensburg Rd., which is an easy route to get out of the District and into PG County, where they say most of the perps are coming from.
I don't fault MPD for the carjackings - they can only be in so many places at one time - and I have seen a stepped-up police presence in my neighborhood, particularly after a carjacking in front of my building a week ago.
Most of these carjackings have happened when the driver is "distracted," which can mean something as simple as unloading a car with groceries, which can't really be prevented. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the types of cars, so don't think that if you drive a POS, you're safe.
It's sad to have to do this, but now whenever I see someone I don't recognize walking on my block at night, I'll take a lap or two around the block until they're gone. Sure, it's not a failsafe way to keep from getting jacked (the suspected carjacker could just be lurking in the bushes near our building or something), but it's a somewhat safer strategy in my mind.
When the cops were walking around the neighborhood after the last carjacking they said that they have found most of the cars at a langston Carver and other projects over the river. I have noticed large groups of young men that are new hanging around, going into the penicle apartments. Does anyone know if the cops have increased their presence in the Penacle? I know they are doing everything they can, but it seems it is not working. They arent just standing on the corner or getting you when you are getting the cars, they are hiding and jumping out at you. These guys are violent and they are young enough to know they will not do serious time if they get caught so they dont care.
F*@king animals.
If they try that shit on me I will throw my car keys onto the nearest roof of any building.
A few days ago MPD did a meet-n-greet at my house on Maryland Ave about the carjackings. They said to be alert for 4 or 5 B/M juveniles (14-17 yrs) in a car...one vehicle used so far was burgundy with MD tags. Seems that two jump out to do carjacking (one has gun and the other with pepperspray) with the two in car as lookout and driver. The perps are mostly stalking immediate blocks around Maryland Ave due to easy main road getaway to Benning & Bladensburg Ave. Aside from being very alert of surroundings coming/going from your car, they said if see any suspect vehicle/occupants to call 911 immediately to report the suspicious car and get MPD deployed to spot. MPD was very clear to be on the lookout for multiple B/M juveniles in a single vehicle.
To 12:18,
They won't do time? It's not a misdemeanor. It's a Class A felony.
Class A felonies are: first and second degree murder, first degree sexual abuse, first degree child sexual abuse, kidnapping, armed carjacking, obstruction of justice, armed crimes of violence.
I think these young men are carjacking because they know they won't get caught.
Carjacking is essentially the same offense as robbery. The only difference is that the “something of value” taken is a car instead of another item of property. The penalty for a carjacking conviction is a maximum fine of $5,000, a mandatory minimum period of incarceration of 7 years, and a maximum sentence of 21 years.
The offense becomes “armed carjacking” if a firearm or dangerous weapon is used during the course of the carjacking. In that case, the offense carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum sentence of 40 years.
its only armed carjacking if the prosecutors push forward with that charge instead of pleading down with the criminals to let them plead guilty to a lesser offense. it happens all the time, and the little animals know it so aren't too concerend with getting caught. just a minor, temporary inconvenience to the lil animals and it occurs only when the police catch them, the witnesses id them and cooperate, the prosecutors push for the maximum charges without pleading down, and the prosecutors give a convincing enough argument to obtian a guilty verdict.
Anon 12:40,
So let me get this straight--If I see 4 black kids in a maroon car (or, even in any car) I can call the police and I won't be accused of being racist? In fact, that is what the police WANT us to do?
This is a serious question and I'm trying to get some clarification. I'll absolutely do it every time if this is the case.
One problem in DC is that after 24 hours the car that was car jacked is not considered part of a violent crime. if a cop was to see the car driving around 3 days later and try to pull it over and the car drives away they are not allowed to chase it. It might be a felony but these guys are under 18, In DC if you are under 18 and committ a crime short of murder you get a slap on the wrist.

In front of my house this morning, I saw someones car window that had been broken. It wasn't clear if they stole anything out the car, but I know this makes the 3rd window in the past week on this street alone. to be clear, the carjackings are a problem, but so are the thefts.
Yes anon 1:03, if you see 4 young black males in any car of any color call 911 to report a crime in progress. I'm sure that's exactly what MPD meant. Heck, just to be safe, dial 911 anytime u see a black guy on your street, because something must be about to go down. I've called about 673 times today alone because all these black people won't stop driving down my street. I even saw one of them park and go into the house next door. They act like they live here or something
Well, Ro, your ripping sarcasm aside, what do they want us to do? What is 'suspicious' behavior, if its not fitting the description of criminals?
If these carjackings are being perpetrated by 3-4 young black males in a maroon car with MD plates, sounds like MPD want us calling when if we see them. Otherwise, what good is their advice at that meeting.
Frankly, if police stop a group like this and it's not the perps, oh f-ing well. I'd much rather inconvenience a few people and have the real perps caught than to play around with silly p/c nonsense and continue to have our neighborhood be such an easy target.
I am going to cruise around the hood tonight and tmw night and take care of this matter myself.
Yeah, Ro! We the douchebaggery of Capitol Hill can't be expected to trust our instincts and exercise a little common sense when deciding whether to call MPD about suspicious activity. You expect way too much of us. Clearly, MPD would have citizens waste their time with phone calls every time multiple black men riding in the same car roll thru our hood. That's the only explanation for the guidance relayed to us on this blog by the other resident.
Wake up, Ro! Before you wind up a victim yourself! And don't come back at me with a little boy who cried wolf argument either. I don't want to hear any level-headed rationale for exercising discretion in the face of this crisis. The only solution is to panic, sit by the window with your phone and wear out the 9 and 1 buttons everytime you see black folks in a car. Get with the program!
Inked -
I was not referring to your post. I was mentioning an anonymous post. Sorry for the confusion.
MD
MD,
no problem, but the term blogger typically refers to the person writing the blog. Those leaving comments would be commenters. It avoids confusion.
My wife has elected to stay at home with our toddler and baby. When she loads the children into the car, I've encouraged her to profile everyone that walks by.
I agree that MPD needs to be a better job protecting our families and friends from these predators -- profile if you need to. What other tools do you need?
I remember a few weeks ago when my family was stopped at the make shift checkpoint at 12th and D Street, NE and we were both asked for our ID's.
MPD informed us they were stopping people and asking for ID because of the recent car-jacking's. After producing the documents I said, "seriously? 4 European-Americans ranging from mid 30's to 4 weeks old fit the profile? " Response, "we can't profile." If true, MPD needs the tools to do the job. I don't think I'm going out on a limb here that no one on this blog is a "racist." However, we want our families safe and right now young black males are mugging, car-jacking and terrorizing residents. It must stop.
Capitol,
I get what you're saying. Most of the white kids that get picked up in DC aren't picked up for carjacking, but lowerclass white kids in DC almost don't exist.
I would say we do get some racist comments here.
I would say that all of us are very concerned about the recent carjackings.
I once had a black DC native say that anytime she saw more than four black teens she didn't know she was on the lookout. But honestly, I see groups of four, or more black kids everyday, and not all are up to no good. My advice it to know the kids on your block (and say hi). Also know the adults on your block (and say hi).
Every so often something comes up here (I'm not saying that's happening now) where a white person feels that white people are targeted (and sometimes they are, but not exclusively). Let me assure that the same kids who target white folks for carjackings/robberies also target adult black females/males, and the elderly of any race. None of us has a monopoly on being victims.
If a kid follows you down the street at an even pace, or one follows and one leads. Those are pointers. If you seriously get a bad vibe, go back in your house, or go into a business. You might try reading a book like the Gift of Fear. You can carry pepper spray, but just as with guns, there is a risk of the weapon being turned back upon the victim.
Best advice, take a self-defense course, and carry pepper spray.
Inked, I didn't say that racist comments aren't posted on the blog, clearly they have been in the past. However, in those instances where clear racists comments have been posted, folks seem to comment in anger and frustration more than anything.
Good advice regarding getting to know the people on one's block, we do. I'm not concerned about our neighbors preying on innocents. None of the recent news stories regarding car-jackings involved neighbor on neighbor violence and all have been by one or multiple black males, a simple fact.
At the end of 2009, from the articles in the Post and from posts on the Mothers on the Hill message board, European-American women with one or multiple children were being targeted.
Self defense courses and pepper spray wouldn't have helped several of the incidences last year when a gun was pointed at a mother who is trying to shield her children from these criminals.
The behavior must change. How do we do that? I don't know, however current methods and thinking clearly are not working. Solutions over sensitivities are needed.
The best advice is for the community to admit there is a problem and look at real solutions that require tough questions beyond MPD pulling over cars with families.
I'm surprised there wasn't any discussion here of one of the main drivers of this type of crime -- easy access to guns and almost no consequences for being caught with one.
see this article http://www.washingtonian.com/articles/people/8002.html
If the guy doesn't have a gun, I'm not giving him my car.
This is something DC "leaders" such as Tommy Wells should theoretically be fixing. Until we demand they do, carjackings will continue.
If the guy doesn't have a gun, I'm not giving him my car.
Good luck with that.
Thanks, "yeah, right" for your good wishes.
Truthfully, I'd almost welcome that situation. I'm pretty pissed at the people who terrorize our neighborhood. Take away the lethal potential of guns, and I'll gladly take a few swings at someone trying to rob me. I'm as big as they are, so why not? Maybe they'd think twice before robbing someone else.
rick -- the reason I don't give you good odds are these:
1. there's *almost always* more than one attacker;
2. The lack of a gun is not the same as the lack of a weapon. Knives are sometimes the weapon of choice.
So I don't mean any insult at all when I say that I just don't like your odds. Even if you're big and strong and can take out one unarmed guy without much trouble, I question your ability to take out three (the usual number in the recent spree) guys with knives.
