Anyone know why Florida between 13th and 12th was closed down around 7 this morning? There were cop cars blocking the road by 13th and then several cars parked at weird angles closer to 12th. It also looked like Montello was blocked off between Morse and Florida.

I dont know but i'm on the 12th block of Florida and saw an ambulance and police car outside...

The Cap City Diner article was truly a great piece. What a pleasure to read and what a great story. Highly recommend everybody read it.

I think in 5 years (maybe less? maybe now?) or so we'll look back and say how the Cap City Diner was the single most important thing to help to revitalize that stretch of Bladensburg...

No doubt its the little Diner that could...

Apparently they were executing a search and arrest warrant in the 1100 block of Montello. a juvenile pulled a gun on the mother's boyfriend. Two arrests were made. This happened at 6:45am

I agree, the Diner is a massive tipping point for Blandensburg and H St. It is great because it has a universal appeal, young, old, black, white, whomever, who doesn't love grits, eggs, pancakes, burgers, etc????

Many years ago, we preached that development works in the following way:

Nightclubs and taverns come first: Martini Lounge, R&B, Palace, RnR

Then come restaurants: Argo, Sticky, GM, H St. CC, Souk

Then come day acttivties: Baby Loves Disco, Sova, Dance classes, Taylor, Capital City Diner.

Retail will come in the next few months: Danerously Delicious is both bakery and take-out. Watch out for Record stores, bike stores, garden centers, etc in the future............

Hats off Capitol City guys for vision, grit, balls and determination. You are real difference makers!!!!

1100 block of Montello? Eep. I was wondering about the 1100 block of Trinidad Ave as I'm considering a rental apt on the block now.

Does anybody know when Dangerously Pies will be open ?

The 1100 block of Trinidad is fine. This stuff happens every once in a while and you have to be careful like any part of the city, but overall the area is safe. Don't let this discourage you.

Anon. 12:18,

As far as I know, Dangerously Delicious Pies has not given out a grand opening date as yet. Last I heard they were still wrestling with DCRA over some inspections.

Its been recently advertised that the proprietor and his rock band will be doing some sort of show/gig/tour stop/something-or-other at the DC pie shop on March 12th.

Its possible that they may have the grand opening on March 12th assuming they get everything straightened out with "the man" (i.e., DC government).

I want to stress however that this is just a GUESS and SPECULATION on my part and is in no way based on any reliable information or source.

To the contrary, I'm basing this off my own spider-sense which tends to be a bit twitchy and not very reliable. Especially when I'm driving...

the pie shop got its building permit yesterday so shouldn't be long! http://cpms.dcra.dc.gov/OBPAT/PermitStatus.aspx?ID=B1000479

They got their last permit yesterday and we're ready to inspect as soon as construction is done. Contact me directly at michael.rupert@dc.gov if they need any assistance or run into any issues.

Everyone, there is some cool stuff happening at the Atlas this weekend and next.

Show the arts some love...You might be surprised.

This weekend there is Speakeasy DC's Wetbacks Towelheads and Aliens. Tonight and tomorrow only and it's selling fast.

Hip Hop artist (And recent Grammy nominee) Christylez Bacon debuts his new theatrical piece this weekend. He did a free show for kids last week and he is really great.

won't you be our neighbor? said...

Anonymous 12:03, I actually live on the 1100 block of Trinidad. Three years in and not a single incident or complaint. My wife and I come and go as we please and have never had a problem. The longstanding neighbors, and a few of the newcomers are really amazing people: our neighbor's son shoveled our walkways and helped dig out my mother-in-laws car while we were out-of-town and she was there alone. Our neihgbors are a greta resource and we have gotten to know our immediate neighbors really well, but in general, it is a very friendly block.

Maybe I'm biased, but I love our block. My only wish is that something fun could eventually pop up where the laundry currently is (I'm not sure if it's open anymore). With the bus route in front, there is always a steady stream of people.

You can't really go wrong on our block, it's very convenient, safe, and friendly. OK, it's time for me to stop lobbying.

Atlas, Playhouse........sorry I forgot you. Without you guys, nothing would ever happened here. I left you out because I drink too much (coffee).

It's fantastic to see a DCRA rep on this comment board.

I know the permitting process in DC is still a nightmare for many, but it's light years better than it was even five years ago.

Steps like being on comment boards like this would seem to be a huge improvement over years past.

1100 trinidad-

There is going to be a health food store opening up on the corner of Trinidad and Florida. I met the owner Omar I think is his name when he was shoveling the sidewalk in from of the storefront during the storm.

A health food store at Trinidad and Florida would be great! does that mean that the funeral home that was suppose to come there is not coming???

ro said...

not if everyone starts eating health food

Jen said...

Apology accepted my friend.
And I want to thank you for working with us to help cross promote the event with your businesses and for offering the Festival patrons a discount.

It's just one big happy family down here...

The funeral home was headed for a different intersection, but it isn't coming now.

Went to Capital City Diner for breakfast. The place was packed, with a line outside for most of the time we were there. The folks seemed to be working hard, and the food was pretty good. They need time to work out some kinks--we we forewarned that we'd be waiting fifteen minutes for food (it was more like 30), we got one (incomplete) order well before the other, and the onions in the omelette weren't really cooked, but problems like these tend to be self-correcting, and the waitress comped our orange juices because of the snafus, which I thought was a nice gesture. Looking forward to returning.

in my mind there is this space of time between the "Evil Never Dies" graffiti and opening of Jimmy Valentine's and now the diner, that blandensburg was just silently screaming for help that didnt seem to want to come.

though there was that short time of the restaurant at the old body shop ( bubbas? big mans? i cant remember, but it spoke of largeness...)

its an amazing tipping point. thanks to those that took risks and made things happen.
