I've had a couple of readers write in with questions about some fencing that just went up around some rowhouses in the 700 block of 2nd Street. It looks like they are slated for demolition (and that's how I recall the process ending up) in preparation for new construction (Dreyfus, I believe). But sometimes I'm not so clear on stuff so far west. Anyone who sat through all those meetings care to shed a little light? Are the houses going, or staying?

Demolition of the houses is starting tomorrow (4/26/10) with an expected duration of 2 weeks. This is for the large Dreyfus project.
Socks,
Do you know when Dreyfus expects to break ground on the actual building of the apt complex?
They haven't filed for construction permits yet. No official word on when that phase will begin but let's hope we don't have a dirt field with a chain link fence for too long!
It's easy for me to whine since I don't bother to have a blog, but it'd seem to me that whatever is going up in lieu of an entire city block of houses may merit a bit more of a mention than the six billion posts we get on the latest trendy bar opening.
Trendy bars come and go. An entire city block doesn't get torn down every day.
The most recent update I saw was here: http://dcmud.blogspot.com/2010/04/doomed-historic-h-street-properties.html
Hillman,
It's actually not an entire city block of houses. It's a block that is mostly a surface level parking lot (a junky one at that) and about 5-6 row houses.
I used to live around the corner from the block in question, the houses are not anything special, historic or not.
