I was down at the Florida Market buying lamb and tofu with a friend earlier today. We walked through the flea market and saw a new stand called selling tacos. You could already get hotdogs and a few other items, including (oddly) carrot cake. We tried a couple of tacos ($2 each) and they were tasty. Unlike other stands, this one actually provided a table so a few people could sit. It looked like they only had tacos.

I wanted to add that there was also a Mexican ice cream cart nearby.

yup. put in a shitty taco stand and hope that absent-minded folks will suddenly fight to the death to keep the grand florida market as is.
these are the folks that should seriously consider a career in 'sanitary engineering".
cuz that's what they're all about.
oh, and yeah. cool. tacos. wow.
wow.
tacos don't clean up blood and drugs and prostitution.
unless you live far away and don't really care about us residents that live next door. and yeah, that includes the deaf students next door.
taco stand, schmaco stand.
quit touting the lame "benefits" of the weekend blackmarket.
unless, of course, you stand to gain something from the activities that go on there....
by the way, i'm trying to get the hard drive of my old laptop to boot up on my new computer. i have some excellent shots of folks fighting, and whoring at the grand Florida Market. one of the pix actually has blood spattered on the camera lens.
i have no idea where you folks get off on the market being this mecca. maybe it is, for DC transplants from ohio, wisconsin, etc. suffice it to say, the hinterlands.
the market is a long term detriment to the area. get out of school, work, live, marry and have kids. THEN tout how marvelous the market and the taco stand are....
l.o.s.e.r.
thanks in advance
one tiny example: go to dcmud.blogspot.com for more, if you are clueless and haven't been keeping up to date with developments in the neighborhood. elise has a valid opinion, but it's just that. an opinion of someone who lives far away from the market "with the really cool, so totally awesome taco stand! woo hoo!"
"
I had a male co-worker who was robbed and raped at gun point right in front of Galludet Univ and people just kept driving by. I hope the new development will bring more police activity. Before he use to work from the NY Ave Metro to West VA Ave and now he drives everywhere. Oh by the way, he is white not that, that make any different. He still haves abrasions and stitches to his rectum. He life has changed since moving here from Montana."
go. to. the. market. at. night.
not during one of your hoo ha daily excursions.
seriously, wtf? why do you promulgate crime in the area?
weren't you "trained" as a laywer, elise?
wtf?
for the newcomers:

what will the city do without a place to move and sell wholesale food? this is a necessity in a big city.
hmmmmm someone loves them some drama.yes they do.
If the market, is so bad, I have to wonder why you choose to live so close to it.
I live just a block away from the Florida Market. It definitely could use a little cleaning, better signs, nicer sidewalks, and a few more retail options.
But there's no way it's filled with "blood and drugs and prostitution." There's awesome Korean food, Litteri's, and the always excellent Don Pepe's Cafe for great Salvadorian food. Tacos sound like a cool addition.
That said, I'm looking forward to the vacant lots between 5th and 6th and the Florida Market building itself being redeveloped by J Street & Gallaudet. But I have no confidence that Sang Oh Choi would do anything right if they go forward with their awful "New Town."
Oh yeah, and can't forget Maurice for electrical supplies - they're great if you're buying a lot or a little. And Mexican Fruit is actually open 7 days with late hours and good prices!
I could pass on the flea market itself, because it's a waste of space 5 days a week and it seems like almost everyone there drives (and poorly!).
Seriously, I dont know what people's shit is with the market. I lived 1 block away and I never saw any stolen crap at the market. The stuff wasnt good enough to have been stolen. Also, I've never seen any hookers there. If you look at all the arrest reports, there are NO hookers around there. Ivy city, sure, but not in the market. I've never seen any violance there either. Yeah, its dirty, but its an INDUSTRIAL MARKET. They are all like that. There are plenty of awesome finds in that market.
i love tacos. were they corn or flour tortillas?
i'll also recommend district taco (it's a cart). its generally in that hell hole VA, but when I go there for work and see the cart, it makes the trip less hellish. twitter tells you where they are parked on a given day. they use flour tortillas, though. not bad, but i've been starting to like good corn ones
DCJaded,
I have seen with my own eyes 6'+ transvestites with weave flowing down their backs riding a bicycle in and out of the Florida market at 4 AM. Ihardly think they were there siteseeing.
PS - I don't think I'll forgtet the image in my life...
Dave B.,
corn tortillas filled with little cubes of beef, onions, and cilantro. They also give you slices of lime, cucumber, and radish. You add the tomatillo sauce yourself.
Oh, and there was also a cart selling Mexican ice cream.
The market is a diamond in the rough. And it IS rough.
The place needs organization and attention and development and investment, but the market itself could be an incredible draw. I now do a lot of my food shopping there and I am amazed at how much retail there really is hidden behind the broken-down facades. The rich variety of food, spices, etc. available has inspired my cooking in new directions. It's a good and economical alternative to going to the supermarket.
I would definitely take down the big market building in the back though (it's really dark, smelly and claustrophobic in there) and build a new, inexpensive big open vaulted building in its place, restore the flagpoles and old market building storefronts and clean up the alleys and streets and sidewalks.
The problem as I see it is nobody is in charge of the market area and the store owners don't seem to be interested in organizing. It is such a waste of an opportunity right now. I think it could become a major city destination--far more rich and interesting than the Eastern (Boutique) Market, and right off the Metro.
Honestly, I'm more intrigued that you can buy tofu at that market than the tacos.
Re: poo's new neighbor - When I see a tranny hooker, I call the police. When I see someone selling stolen goods, I call the police. When someone litters on my block, I call the police. Stop snitchin is not a lifestyle choice that made it's way to me. I don't care much for blood and drugs and prostitution. I live at 6th and Florida (a literal stone's throw from the market), so should you see something in the market that is not on the up and up, then please call the police, or run on over to my house (1208 6th Street -ask for Yancey) and I will call them for you. In fear is no way to live.
Re: Next to the Market - agree fully
Re: IMGoph - the plan calls for moving the wholesale functions to the back of the market, by Penn and NY, so that the wholesale traffic wouldn't interfere with residents or pedestrian traffic.
Re: Skinnytree - perhaps a civic fundraising/lobbying organization such as "Friends of the Florida Market"?
