Here's the info about the artist from the press release:

Matthew Lipman is a gifted young violist who won first-prize viola and $10,000 at the 2009 Johansen International String Competition at the age of 17.

Now 18, Mr. Lipman is a scholarship recipient and member of the Music Institute of Chicago's Academy program for gifted pre-college musicians where he studies privately with MIC artist faculty member Roland Vamos. He started his music studies on the viola at age ten in a public school string program. He is a current recipient of a Career Grant from the Rachel Elizabeth Barton Foundation and a 2007 Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award.

In August, 2009, he was sent to London, England, by the Johansen International Competition to perform at the London Masterclasses under the direction of Norma Fischer. He was accepted into the class of Gyorgy Pauk. Mr. Lipman was the youngest participant there, and his playing was described as a "breath of fresh air."

In early 2010, Mr. Lipman won first prize at the Blount-Slawson Young Artists Competition in Montgomery, Alabama. His awards include a performance with the Montgomery Symphony at the Davis Theater on April 26, 2010; $10,000 (consisting of a cash award of $2,500 and an educational award of $7,500); and an appearance on the nationally broadcasted From The Top Radio Show hosted by Christopher O'Riley.

Mr. Lipman's other first-place awards include: the; the 2009 American String Teachers Association National Solo Competition; the 2008 Union League Civic and Arts Foundation Competition; the Senior Division of the 2008 Society of American Musicians Solo Competition; the 2007 Walgreen's National Concerto Competition; the 2006 Chicago and 2007 Ohio Viola Society Solo Competitions; the 2006 Birch Creek Music Festival Concerto Competition; and the 2005 Southwest Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. In March 2008, he was named First Alternate of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions.

Among his radio and television credits are solo appearances on National Public Radio's From the Top (2007 & 2009), its PBS television counterpart, From the Top: Live from Carnegie Hall (2008), and live performances on WFMT 98.7's radio program, Introductionsand WTTW'sChicago Tonight, and the CBS Channel 2 Morning News.An enthusiastic chamber musician, Mr. Lipman is a member of Quartet Polaris, which won the Gold Medal of the Junior Division of the 2008 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. His orchestral experience includes being principal violist of the MIC Academy Chamber Orchestra, four years with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and its elite Encore Chamber Orchestra, the Southwest Symphony Orchestra, and the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra.

In addition to his studies with Roland Vamos, Mr. Lipman has studied with Matthew Mantell, Peter Slowik, and Li-Kuo Chang. He is a member of the prestigious Perlman Music Program, where he is mentored by Heidi Castleman of the Juilliard School. He has performed in master classes for violist Helen Callus, Stephen Clapp, Paul Coletti, Roberto Diaz, and Lawrence Dutton. Mr. Lipman is a student at Crete-Monee High School in Illinois. His other interests include architecture, sports cars, and Facebook.
