DCist: Council Votes to Strip Streetcar Funds

Here's the scoop. But it's not over yet. I've heard that Tommy Wells plans to try amend a vote later today to try to restore some of the funds. Who voted to restore the funding?  Wells, Evans, Graham (via HStreetDC). All others opposed.

Hey Harry Thomas and Yvette Alexander, how the hell do you vote to defund a streetcar line that runs along your own ward???

Wait, I just got a different number for the budget vote. 11-2 from a statement released by Gray's office about (wait for it...) how much he loves and supports streetcars. Did just Wells and Evans vote against the cut?

UPDATE

Only Wells and Evans voted against the cuts. The vote was in Committee of the Whole, so there is still time before it is finalized today.

Well, that's that. Definitely voting for Fenty. Fascinating that Gray wants to write off the entire corridor.

I am visiting all the Gray signs in my neighborhood and discussing this issue with them.

Wells and Evans voted against the budget in the Committee on the Whole. Wells is offering an amendment before final passage before the Council this afternoon. Folks need to contact the other councilmembers -- Graham, Kwame, Michael Brown, Mendelson, Thomas, etc to tell them to support the amendment. Call, email do whatever you can.

Does anyone have any idea how this will affect current construction? will they finish paving H street with the track laid down? will they finish paving H street without track? will they pick up and leave and leave H Street in a construction ridden warzone? It's sad that the cars won't be here for years, but the street needs to be left in reasonable shape in the meantime

I feel like H ST NE just got crushed. It didn't really, since we have a nightlife here now, without any streetcars and with hideous ongoing construction all over the place. Still, very sad.

I feel like it will certainly drag out the current construction. And does this kill the pending Giant deal at 3rd and H?
