Mixed-use Arbor Place project in NE D.C. is nixed
Washington Business Journal - by Michael Neibauer
Jim Abdo’s massive Arbor Place project planned for New York Avenue NE is no more, a victim of a tight credit market and tanking economy.
Trying to launch a 16-acre, $1.1 billion mixed-use development in this economy “is next to impossible,” Abdo said.
So he’s shifted focus: He’ll help the Schaeffer family, owner of 11.75 of the 16 acres that constitute Arbor Place, find an alternative use for the property. Abdo had “contractual control” of the site, bounded by New York Avenue, Montana Avenue and Bladensburg Road, but he never owned the land.
“I think it’s safe to say the current credit market and the current economic climate do not make the vision of Arbor Place an immediate possibility,” Abdo said. “If our vision can’t be implemented, why not be a supportive citizen if it’s going to benefit our city? There’s no misgivings on our part. No animosity toward the Schaeffers. We just want to see something productive and positive happen.”

This breaks my heart to hear but given the current market who can blame them. On the bright side of this, at least there will be more retail coming in that area now that Abdo has backed out. I would rather see Costcos and Targets rather than condos.
Considering how they still haven't sold all the condos in the old Children's Museum on H St. can't say I'm surprised by this. They need to get rid of their excess inventory before they can start thinking about new construction.
I am looking to repave my back patio and put in a deck does any body know of a good contractor for this kind of work. Has anyone ever used Capitol Hill concrete before. Thanks for your help!
I'm surprised that there has been no chatter here about Mendelson's opposition to streetcars. Another reason for me to vote Clark Ray.
