Reached all the way up to 12th and Maryland NE - I crossed MD at around 5:15 or so, and the traffic signals were completely out.
Side note - when traffic signals are out, it's a FOUR-WAY STOP. I don't give a rat's ass about how quickly you want to get your SUV up Maryland Avenue, I'm going to be crossing the street when there's a reasonable break in the cars. Yell at me all you want as you drive by, but I was in the right, and you're still an ass.
Stantonsez [begin rant] it's always the maryland commuters, who also don't respect pedestrian crossings and any sense that people live here and it's not a high-speed expressway...i get that they're angry from spending hours in traffic. so give up the burbs and end your stupid commute. it ain't anyone's fault but their own. [end rant]
Riding back from the Arboretum yesterday at around 5:00, I saw a manhole cover at Bladensburg and Mt Olivet Roads get blown about 6 feet in the air. May have had something to do with it.
One thing I thought was interesting: when riding to work this morning, I came to the intersection of S. Carolina and Penn Ave, SE, and they had temporary 4-way stop signs set up.
There appeared to be *no* discernible problem with traffic throughput on Penn Ave westbound. Why the f*** do we need all these traffic lights again?
It would be a hell of a lot better for pedestrians and cyclists if we got rid of about 80% of them, and just forced cars to give up the right-of-way, rather than making pedestrians wait a minute or two every time they want to cross the street.

I think one part of the dynamic is that a lot of folks used to live here, then they "cashed out", moved to the 'burbs, and now are finding out that there's a crippling daily commute and free-falling suburban house prices.
Not saying I approve of the constant reckless driving, but if I were in their shoes, I would definitely feel a bit like the victim of an elaborate scam.

They were very responsive to the 12-pack of Keystone Light I gave them...
Outage stretched to Eighth and F NE, too. No power for about an hour.
Also 9th and E NE
