VOTH: Voice of the Hill To Cease Publication

Via Twitter The Voice of the Hill announced it is calling it quits:

"Voice to cease publication. And tweeting."

Too bad, VOH was a great local paper.

VOH once was a 'great' paper. With Current and w/o founders, it became dull, late to the game and fell far far behind the Hill Rag. Most local business people I know maintained (or expanded) Hill Rag advertising and reduced (or stopped) sending $$'s to VOH. This is a simple content/editorial decision and Current is like many in the media to blame their demise on the recession and local business' willingness to invest rather than their own very apparent missteps (of course, VOH and the Rag do so much like the Realtor advert's which have been slowly and increasingly moving to the web).

The VOH just hasn't had much going for it since Robey sold it. However, the VOH competition made the Hillrag improve. There was a time when the Hillrag never covered the ANC meetings, nor NE of East Capitol, was always published and distributed late, and was pretty much puff pieces between real estate ads. Hopefully it will not revert to that, since I really like the improved version.

Always sad to see a newspaper die. Even struggling papers take a lot of effort to write, edit and publish. More diversity in the press is always a good thing.
